An HST/WFPC2 Survey for Brown Dwarf Binaries in the alpha Per and the Pleiades Open Clusters
We present the results of a high-resolution imaging survey for brown dwarf
(BD) binaries in two open clusters. The observations were carried out with
WFPC2 onboard HST. Our sample consists of 8 BD candidates in the alpha Per
cluster and 25 BD candidates in the Pleiades. We have resolved 4 binaries in
the Pleiades with separations in the range 0".094--0".058, corresponding to
projected separations between 11.7~AU and 7.2~AU. No binaries were found among
the alpha Per targets. Three of the binaries have proper motions consistent
with cluster membership in the Pleiades cluster, and for one of them we report
the detection of Halpha in emission and LiI absorption obtained from
Keck~II/ESI spectroscopy. One of the binaries does not have a proper motion
consistent with Pleiades membership. We estimate that BD binaries wider than
12~AU are less frequent than 9% in the alphaPer and Pleiades clusters. This is
consistent with an extension to substellar masses of a trend observed among
stellar binaries: the maximum semimajor axis of binary systems decreases with
decreasing primary mass. We find a binary frequency of 2 binaries over 13 BDs
with confirmed proper motion membership in the Pleiades, corresponding to a
binary fraction of 15%(1 sigma error bar +15%/-5%). These binaries are limited
to the separation range 7-12~AU and their mass ratios are larger than 0.7. The
relatively high binary frequency (>10%), the bias to separations smaller than
about 15 AU and the trend to high mass ratios (q>0.7) are fundamental
properties of BDs. Current theories of BD formation do not appear to provide a

Integration of an ARAIM algorithm in the development of an instrument approach procedure and for pre-flight operational briefing
Advanced Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring (ARAIM) offers the opportunity to enable Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers to serve as a primary means of navigation, worldwide, for precision approach down to Localizer Performance with Vertical guidance (LPV-200) operation. Previous produced works analysed the performance of this new technique, clearly showing the potential of ARAIM architectures to provide the Required Navigation Performance (RNP) for LPV 200. However, almost all of the studies were performed with respect to fixed points on a grid on the Earthâs surface, with full view of the sky, evaluating ARAIM performance from a geometrical point of view and using nominal performance in simulated scenarios lasting several days. In our previous work we presented the ARAIM performance in simulated operational configurations. Attitude changes from manoeuvers, obscuration by the aircraft body and shadowing from the surrounding environment could all affect the incoming signal from the GNSS constellations, leading to configurations that could adversely affect the real performance. In this paper, we continue the previous work. The new proposed algorithm integrates ARAIM performance prediction capability, considering the attitude and terrain shadowing effects, in two different scenarios:
In the design of instrument approach procedures. The algorithm could be used to improve the procedure of the development of new instrument approaches, reducing time, effort and costs.
In the aircraft Flight Management Systems. The algorithm could support the pilots in the pre-flight briefing, highlighting possible integrity outage in advance and allowing them to select a different approach or making them aware of the need to utilise additional positioning systems.
Increased awareness and better pre-flight planning could ultimately improve the safety of flights and contribute to the safe introduction of GNSS as a viable positioning method for instrument approach
Wegner-Houghton equation and derivative expansion
We study the derivative expansion for the effective action in the framework
of the Exact Renormalization Group for a single component scalar theory. By
truncating the expansion to the first two terms, the potential and the
kinetic coefficient , our analysis suggests that a set of coupled
differential equations for these two functions can be established under certain
smoothness conditions for the background field and that sharp and smooth
cut-off give the same result. In addition we find that, differently from the
case of the potential, a further expansion is needed to obtain the differential
equation for , according to the relative weight between the kinetic and
the potential terms. As a result, two different approximations to the
equation are obtained. Finally a numerical analysis of the coupled equations
for and is performed at the non-gaussian fixed point in

Tannin containing legumes as a model for nutraceuticals against digestive parasites in livestock
Parasitic infections with gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) still represent a worldwide major pathological threat associated with the outdoor production of various livestock species. Because of the widespread resistance to synthetic chemical anthelmintics, there is a strong impetus to explore novel approaches for a more integrated management of the infections. The use of nutraceuticals in the control of GINs is one of the alternatives which has been widely studied for since 20 years. The objectives of this review are: i) to define and illustrate the concept of ânutraceuticalâ in the
context of veterinary parasitology based on data obtained on the most studied GIN models in small ruminants, the tannin-containing legumes (Fabaceae); ii) to illustrate how the ânutraceutical conceptâ could be expanded to other plants, other livestock production systems and other GI parasitic diseases, and iii) to explain how this concept is opening up new research fields for better
understanding the interactions between the host, the digestive parasites and the environment
FIRBACK Source Counts and Cosmological Implications
FIRBACK is a one of the deepest surveys performed at 170 microns with ISOPHOT
onboard ISO, and is aimed at the study of cosmic far infrared background
sources. About 300 galaxies are detected in an area of four square degrees, and
source counts present a strong slope of 2.2 on an integral "logN-logS" plot,
which cannot be due to cosmological evolution if no K-correction is present.
The resolved sources account for less than 10% of the Cosmic Infrared
Background at 170 microns. In order to understand the nature of the sources
contributing to the CIB, and to explain deep source counts at other
wavelengths, we have developed a phenomenological model, which constrains in a
simple way the luminosity function evolution with redshift, and fits all the
existing deep source counts from the mid-infrared to the submillimetre range.

Dark Matter Search in the Edelweiss Experiment
Preliminary results obtained with 320g bolometers with simultaneous
ionization and heat measurements are described. After a few weeks of data
taking, data accumulated with one of these detectors are beginning to exclude
the upper part of the DAMA region. Prospects for the present run and the second
stage of the experiment, EDELWEISS-II, using an innovative reversed cryostat

23 High Redshift Supernovae from the IfA Deep Survey: Doubling the SN Sample at z>0.7
We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of 23 high redshift
supernovae spanning a range of z=0.34-1.03, 9 of which are unambiguously
classified as Type Ia. These supernovae were discovered during the IfA Deep
Survey, which began in September 2001 and observed a total of 2.5 square
degrees to a depth of approximately m=25-26 in RIZ over 9-17 visits, typically
every 1-3 weeks for nearly 5 months, with additional observations continuing
until April 2002. We give a brief description of the survey motivations,
observational strategy, and reduction process. This sample of 23 high-redshift
supernovae includes 15 at z>0.7, doubling the published number of objects at
these redshifts, and indicates that the evidence for acceleration of the
universe is not due to a systematic effect proportional to redshift. In
combination with the recent compilation of Tonry et al. (2003), we calculate
cosmological parameter density contours which are consistent with the flat
universe indicated by the CMB (Spergel et al. 2003). Adopting the constraint
that Omega_total = 1.0, we obtain best-fit values of (Omega_m,
Omega_Lambda)=(0.33, 0.67) using 22 SNe from this survey augmented by the
literature compilation. We show that using the empty-beam model for
gravitational lensing does not eliminate the need for Omega_Lambda > 0.
Experience from this survey indicates great potential for similar large-scale
surveys while also revealing the limitations of performing surveys for z>1 SNe
