Household Specialization and the Male Marriage Wage Premium
Empirical research has consistently shown that married men have substantially higher wages, on average, than otherwise similar unmarried men. One commonly cited hypothesis to explain this pattern is that marriage allows one spouse to specialize in market production and the other to specialize in home production, enabling the former - usually the husband - to acquire more market-specific human capital and, ultimately, earn higher wages. The authors test this hypothesis using panel data from the National Survey of Families and Households. The data reveal that married men spent virtually the same amount of time on home production as did single men, albeit on different types of housework. Estimates from a fixed effects wage equation indicate that the male marriage wage premium is not substantially affected by controls for home production activities. Household specialization, the authors conclude, does not appear to have been responsible for the marriage premium in this sample
Tunneling Proximity Resonances: Interplay between Symmetry and Dissipation
We report the first observation of bound-state proximity resonances in
coupled dielectric resonators. The proximity resonances arise from the combined
action of symmetry and dissipation. We argue that the large ratio between the
widths is a distinctive signature of the multidimensional nature of the system.
Our experiments shed light on the properties of 2D tunneling in the presence of

Measuring cellular traction forces on non-planar substrates
Animal cells use traction forces to sense the mechanics and geometry of their
environment. Measuring these traction forces requires a workflow combining cell
experiments, image processing and force reconstruction based on elasticity
theory. Such procedures have been established before mainly for planar
substrates, in which case one can use the Green's function formalism. Here we
introduce a worksflow to measure traction forces of cardiac myofibroblasts on
non-planar elastic substrates. Soft elastic substrates with a wave-like
topology were micromolded from polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and fluorescent
marker beads were distributed homogeneously in the substrate. Using feature
vector based tracking of these marker beads, we first constructed a hexahedral
mesh for the substrate. We then solved the direct elastic boundary volume
problem on this mesh using the finite element method (FEM). Using data
simulations, we show that the traction forces can be reconstructed from the
substrate deformations by solving the corresponding inverse problem with a
L1-norm for the residue and a L2-norm for 0th order Tikhonov regularization.
Applying this procedure to the experimental data, we find that cardiac
myofibroblast cells tend to align both their shapes and their forces with the
long axis of the deformable wavy substrate.Comment: 34 pages, 9 figure
Influence of diffraction on the spectrum and wavefunctions of an open system
In this paper, we demonstrate the existence and significance of diffractive
orbits in an open microwave billiard, both experimentally and theoretically.
Orbits that diffract off of a sharp edge of the system are found to have a
strong influence on the transmission spectrum of the system, especially in the
regime where there are no stable classical orbits. On resonance, the
wavefunctions are influenced by both classical and diffractive orbits. Off
resonance, the wavefunctions are determined by the constructive interference of
multiple transient, nonperiodic orbits. Experimental, numerical, and

Maximizing Neumann fundamental tones of triangles
We prove sharp isoperimetric inequalities for Neumann eigenvalues of the
Laplacian on triangular domains.
The first nonzero Neumann eigenvalue is shown to be maximal for the
equilateral triangle among all triangles of given perimeter, and hence among
all triangles of given area. Similar results are proved for the harmonic and
arithmetic means of the first two nonzero eigenvalues
Light intensity modulates the regulatory network of the shade avoidance response in Arabidopsis.
Plants such as Arabidopsis thaliana respond to foliar shade and neighbors who may become competitors for light resources by elongation growth to secure access to unfiltered sunlight. Challenges faced during this shade avoidance response (SAR) are different under a light-absorbing canopy and during neighbor detection where light remains abundant. In both situations, elongation growth depends on auxin and transcription factors of the phytochrome interacting factor (PIF) class. Using a computational modeling approach to study the SAR regulatory network, we identify and experimentally validate a previously unidentified role for long hypocotyl in far red 1, a negative regulator of the PIFs. Moreover, we find that during neighbor detection, growth is promoted primarily by the production of auxin. In contrast, in true shade, the system operates with less auxin but with an increased sensitivity to the hormonal signal. Our data suggest that this latter signal is less robust, which may reflect a cost-to-robustness tradeoff, a system trait long recognized by engineers and forming the basis of information theory
Association between Adiposity and disability in the Lc65+ Cohort.
To examine the longitudinal association between body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) with mortality and incident disability in Lc65+ cohort.
Population-based cohort of non-institutionalized adults with up to 8.9 years of follow-up.
City of Lausanne, Switzerland.
1,293 individuals aged 65 to 70 at baseline (58% women).
BMI, WC and covariates were measured at baseline in 2004-2005. Vital status was obtained up to the 31st December 2013 and difficulty with basic activities of daily living (BADL) was reported in a self-administered questionnaire sent to participants every year. Main outcomes were total mortality and disability, defined as difficulty with BADL for ≥2 years or institutionalization. Cox regression was used with BMI/WC quintiles 2 as the reference.
130 persons died over a median follow-up of 8.47 years (crude mortality rate, men: 16.5/1,000 person-years, women: 9.7/1,000 person-years). In Cox regression adjusted for age, sex, education, financial situation, smoking and involuntary weight loss (IWL) at baseline, mortality was significantly associated with neither BMI nor WC, but there were trends towards non-significant J-curves across both BMI and WC quintiles. Disability (231 cases) tended to increase monotonically across both BMI and WC quintiles and was significantly associated with BMI quintile 5 (HR=2.44, 95% CI [1.65-3.63]), and WC quintiles 4 (HR=1.81 [1.15-2.85]) and 5 (HR=2.58, [1.67-4.00]).
Almost half of the study population had a substantially increased HR of disability, as compared to the reference BMI/WC categories. This observation emphasizes the need for life-long strategies aimed at preventing excess weight, muscle loss and functional decline through adequate nutrition and regular physical activity, starting at early age and extending throughout life
