Introduction: cerebrovascular disease, both in adults and children, has constituted a problem of interest to the medical, national and international scientific community during last years. Objective: to characterize cerebrovascular disease in patients from 29 days born to 18 years old. Material and Method: a descriptive and retrospective research was carried out involving patients from the Intensive Care Unit at “Pepe Portilla” Children-teaching Hospital, in Pinar del Rio during July 2005 to June 2011. The sample was comprised of 20 patients from 29 days born to 18 years old. Medical histories were examined and a survey was applied. Results: the highest annual incidence rate was 2,7 per 100 000 inhabitants; and ages from 5 to 14 showed the major incidence (2,2 per 100 000 inhabitants); intracranial hemorrhage (65 %); the evolution of patients was favorable with the appropriate treatment and only five patients died due to cerebrovascular disease (lethality=25 %), along with a patient presenting aneurism of the right carotid who underwent to surgical treatment, having a favourable recovery without neurological sequelae. Conclusions: the treatment of pediatric patients suffering from cerebrovascular disease in Pinar del Rio province requires the application of a program of diagnosis and personalized comprehensive management allowing a favourable progress to improve patients’ quality of life.

Enabling high-quality transparent conductive oxide on 3D printed ZrO2 architectures through atomic layer deposition
The conformal atomic layer deposition of a transparent conductive oxide composed of Al-doped ZnO (AZO) over three-dimensional (3D) shaped ZrO2 microarchitectures produced using two-photon lithography (TPL) is reported here for the first time. The effect of ZrO2 morphology, surface roughness, and crystallographic phase (tetragonal and monoclinic) on the quality and properties of the deposited ZnO and AZO thin films is investigated. No discontinuities, domains, or areas differing from the desired chemical composition have been found in films grown over the 3D structures. Three different Al dopant concentrations (4.0 %, 4-5 %, and 5.0 % Al doping cycles) are examined and compared to undoped ZnO. AZO and ZnO optical and electrical properties are studied using cathodoluminescence (CL) and Hall effect measurements. The CL study confirms that the observed emissions from the ZnO and AZO films are associated with the near band emission of ZnO and defects, i.e., zinc and oxygen vacancies and interstitial oxygen. The AZO films exhibit n-type semiconductor behavior, and a minimum resistivity of 1.2 x 10-3 Ω cm is achieved. From a broad perspective, AZO deposition on 3D microarchitectures opens a new route towards dimensionally refined optoelectronic devices in which the ZrO2/AZO can serve a key enabling role for the production of electrodes
Teratocarcinoma with a component of choriocarcinoma
Teratocarcinomas represent 3-5% of the intracranial tumors in childhood approximately. Their clinical manifestations can vary from an asymptomatic status to a wide spectrum of neurological, visual and endocrine symptoms. A 9 year-old female patient presenting headache, vomits and sudden loss of vision attended to "Pepe Portilla" Children Hospital, Pinar del Rio. Several medical examinations were performed, diagnosing a Teratocarcinoma with a component of choriocarcinoma; the patient underwent a surgery having a satisfactory evolution
Synthesis and characterization of GaN rods prepared by ammono-chemical vapor deposition
"GaN rods were deposited by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) onto sapphire (0 0 0 1) and amorphous quartz. The reactive Ga species in vapor the phase was formed with NH4Cl and gallium. The unidirectional growth was catalyzed with gold nanoparticles formed onto the substrate prior to the CVD reaction in order to induce a vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) mechanism. However, this method of synthesis seems to be influenced by other growth mechanisms which formed additional depositions of GaN with different morphology than the rods catalyzed by gold nanoparticles. The moieties of GaN that grew in the absence of gold formed branches in the rods or increased the lateral growth of rods resulting in larger diameters than the size of the gold particle that guided the growth.
