    Detectability of smart proppants traced with gadolinium and samarium in the Vaca Muerta formation

    The use of smart proppants traced with gadolinium and samarium was evaluated in a realistic model by Monte Carlo simulations.The addition of compounds with high thermal neutron capture cross section, such as gadolinium oxide (Gd2O3) and samarium oxide (Sm2O3) into ceramic proppants, makes them detectable after placement in induced fractures.Proppants traced with different oxide concentrations were studied in a generic borehole-formation-tool configuration, modeled with MCNP. The Vaca Muerta formation model was constructed based on measured geochemical data. A theoretical formation of water-saturated limestone with 20% porosity was also used as a reference case of study. The minimum concentration of gadolinium and samarium oxides needed, in order to make them detectable by logging tools, was determined. In the case of gadolinium, results are in agreement with previous reported values for Gd2O3 addition of about 0.4% by weight of proppant.In the case of samarium, a minimum concentration of 1.25% by weight of Sm2O3 addition could be detected in both Limestone and Vaca Muerta formations.Fil: Herrera, Maria Silvia.     Thrombin generation by activated factor VII on platelet activated by different agonists. Extending the cell-based model of hemostasis

    BACKGROUND: Platelet activation is crucial in normal hemostasis. Using a clotting system free of external tissue factor, we investigated whether activated Factor VII in combination with platelet agonists increased thrombin generation (TG) in vitro. METHODS AND RESULTS: TG was quantified by time parameters: lag time (LT) and time to peak (TTP), and by amount of TG: peak of TG (PTG) and area under thrombin formation curve after 35 minutes (AUC→(35min)) in plasma from 29 healthy volunteers using the calibrated automated thrombography (CAT) technique. TG parameters were measured at basal conditions and after platelet stimulation by sodium arachidonate (AA), ADP, and collagen (Col). In addition, the effects of recombinant activated FVII (rFVIIa) alone or combined with the other platelet agonists on TG parameters were investigated. We found that LT and TTP were significantly decreased (p < 0.05) and PTG and AUC→(35min )were significantly increased (p < 0.05) in platelet rich plasma activated with AA, ADP, Col, and rFVIIa compared to non-activated platelet rich plasma from normal subjects (p = 0.01). Furthermore platelet rich plasma activated by the combined effects of rFVIIa plus AA, ADP or Col had significantly reduced LT and TTP and increased AUC→(35min )(but not PTG) when compared to platelet rich plasma activated with agonists in the absence of rFVIIa. CONCLUSION: Platelets activated by AA, ADP, Col or rFVIIa triggered TG. This effect was increased by combining rFVIIa with other agonists. Our intrinsic coagulation system produced a burst in TG independent of external tissue factor activity an apparent hemostatic effect with little thrombotic capacity. Thus we suggest a modification in the cell-based model of hemostasis

    Cluster investigation of mixed O76:H19 Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli and atypical enteropathogenic E. coli infection in a Spanish household

    A Spanish household was identified through a Public Health follow up on a Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC)-positive 14-month-old girl reporting bloody diarrhoea, with the four household members experiencing either symptomatic or asymptomatic STEC and/or atypical enteropathogenic E. coli (aEPEC) shedding. In total, two different O76:H19 STEC strains and six aEPEC strains belonging to multiple serotypes were isolated and characterized in the household during a 5-month period. Prolonged asymptomatic shedding of O76:H19 STEC and O51:H49 aEPEC was detected in two family members. Although there was no conclusive evidence, consumption of vegetables fertilized with sheep manure was the suspected source of infection. This study highlights the risk of cross-infections posed by prolonged asymptomatic carriage and close household contact between family members, and illustrates the importance of molecular epidemiology in understanding disease clusters.We thank José Manuel Luquin and Gemma Poignonfor facilitating the follow-up sampling of the house-hold members and relatives.     High macroscopic neutron capture cross section ceramics based on bauxite and Gd2O3

    The effect of the addition of Gadolinium oxide (Gd2O3) up to 10 wt.% in bauxite was studied and its thermal behavior compared with pure bauxite. The incorporation of Gd2O3 is of technological interest for the design of smart traceable ceramic proppants used for unconventional gas and oil well stimulation. These high macroscopic neutron capture cross section proppants are used to obtain relevant information, such as the location and height of the created hydraulic fractures, through a neutron based detection technology. The study comprised a set of thermal and sintering behavior analyses up to 1500 °C of mixtures up to 10 wt.% addition of Gd2O3. The developed texture and microstructure was also assessed. A simple mechanical characterization was performed as well. Fully-dense pore-free microstructures were developed, with alumina and mullite as the main crystalline phases. Gadolinium secondary and ternary alumino-silicate phases were also observed after thermal treatment. These present a needle morphology that might result in reinforcement mechanisms. No important glassy phase was detected; although sintering was enhanced, the Gd2O3 oxide main role was found to be as a sintering aid rather than a strict flux agent. The mechanical behavior remained fragile with the rare oxide addition. In fact, the mechanical resistance increased up to 20 wt.% for the 10 wt.% added sample. The oxide addition together with the bauxite dehydroxilation mass loss resulted in materials with up to 1.5 x 105 (c.u.) macroscopic neutron capture cross section materials. The obtained results permit to define design strategies of high macroscopic neutron capture ceramic materials for wellbore and developed fractures description.Fil: Hernández, Maria Florencia.     Very low potential electrodeposition of Sm-Co nanostructures in aqueous medium using hard templates

    Arrays of SmCo nanowires (NW) and nanotubes (NT) with a diameter of 200 nm and different lengths are synthesized by electrodeposition into the nanopores of an alumina membrane. The potential applied during the synthesis largely determines the nanostructure morphology, its crystallinity and composition. Potentials investigated are between −0.8 V and −3.0 V; in the potential range between −0.8 V and 1.0 V, long and perfectly ordered nanowires are obtained with a composition close to that of the equilibrium Sm2Co17 phase in the binary alloy. For higher potentials, above −1 V, samples are nanotubes, 195 nm in external diameter and wall thickness of 30 nm with an equiatomical composition. Magnetic characterization reveals that all the nanostructures are soft ferromagnetic, with coercivity values below 60 mT. From the angular dependence of coercivity and the relative remanence it may concluded that in both, nanowires and nanotubes the magnetization reversal mechanism undergoes a transition from one at smaller angles, involving localized nucleation by curling, and further expansion of vortex-like domain walls. At higher angles, where the applied field is almost perpendicular to the NW/NT long axis, the mechanism changes to one involving nucleation by localized coherent rotation and further expansion of transverse Bloch-like walls.Fil: Herrera, Elisa Gabriela.
