Measuring multipole moments of Weyl metrics by means of gyroscopes

    Get PDF
Using the technique of Rindler and Perlick we calculate the total precession per revolution of a gyroscope circumventing the source of Weyl metrics. We establish thereby a link between the multipole moments of the source and an ``observable'' quantity. Special attention deserves the case of the gamma-metric. As an extension of this result we also present the corresponding expressions for some stationary space-times.Comment: 18 pages Latex, To appear in J.Math.Phy

Has a Higgs-flavon with a 750750 GeV mass been detected at the LHC13?

Higgs-flavon fields appear as a part of the Froggatt-Nielsen (FN) mechanism, which attempts to explain the hierarchy of Yukawa couplings. We explore the possibility that the 750 GeV diphoton resonance recently reported at the LHC13, could be identified with a low-scale Higgs-flavon field HFH_F and find the region of the parameter space consistent with CMS and ATLAS data. It is found that the extra vector-like fermions of the ultraviolet completion of the FN mechanism are necessary in order to reproduce the observed signal. We consider a standard model (SM) extension that contains two Higgs doublets (a standard one and an inert one) and one complex FN singlet. The inert doublet includes a stable neutral boson, which provides a viable dark matter candidate, while the mixing of the standard doublet and the FN singlet induces flavor violation in the Higgs sector at the tree-level. Constraints on the parameters of the model are derived from the LHC Higgs data, which include the search for the lepton flavor violating decay of the SM Higgs boson h→μˉτh\to \bar{\mu}\tau . It is also found that in some region of the parameter space the model may give rise to a large branching ratio for the HF→hhH_F \to hh decay, of the order of 0.1, which could be searched for at the LHC.Comment: 18 pages, 7 Figures, includes updated files to match published versio

Dynamic Behavior of Thermally Coupled Distillation Configurations for the Separation of Multicomponent Mixtures

    Get PDF
Control properties of thermally coupled distillation arrangements for the separation of multicomponent mixtures were compared to those of conventional distillation sequences. Seven thermally coupled schemes were investigated. The preliminary steady – state design of complex schemes was obtained by starting from a conventional distillation sequences and then optimizing for minimum energy consumption (energy-efficient designs). The dynamic behavior of the sequences considered were obtained by using the singular value decomposition technique at zero frequency. It was found that, in general, the complex schemes present theoretical control properties similar or better to those of conventional distillation sequences. This result is significant because it lets one establish that the energy savings predicted for thermally coupled distillation sequences are achieved without introducing additional control problems

Broadening of H2_2O rotational lines by collision with He atoms at low temperature

    Get PDF
We report pressure broadening coefficients for the 21 electric-dipole transitions between the eight lowest rotational levels of ortho-H2_2O and para-H2_2O molecules by collisions with He at temperatures from 20 to 120 K. These coefficients are derived from recently published experimental state-to-state rate coefficients for H2_2O:He inelastic collisions, plus an elastic contribution from close coupling calculations. The resulting coefficients are compared to the available experimental data. Mostly due to the elastic contribution, the pressure broadening coefficients differ much from line to line, and increase markedly at low temperature. The present results are meant as a guide for future experiments and astrophysical observations.Comment: 2 figures, 2 table

Asteroseismology of delta Scuti stars in open clusters: Praesepe

The present paper provides a general overview of the asteroseismic potential of delta Scuti stars in clusters, in particular focusing on convection diagnostics. We give a summarise of the last results obtained by the authors for the Praesepe cluster of which five delta Scuti stars are analysed. In that work, linear analysis is confronted with observations, using refined descriptions for the effects of rotation on the determination of the global stellar parameters and on the adiabatic oscillation frequency computations. A single, complete, and coherent solution for all the selected stars is found, which lead the authors to find important restrictions to the convection description for a certain range of effective temperatures. Furthermore, the method used allowed to give an estimate of the global parameters of the selected stars and constrain the cluster.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure.
