Low-temperature thermochronology and thermokinematic modeling of deformation, exhumation, and development of topography in the central Southern Alps, New Zealand
Apatite and zircon (U-Th)/He and fission track ages were obtained from ridge transects across the central Southern Alps, New Zealand. Interpretation of local profiles is difficult because relationships between ages and topography or local faults are complex and the data contain large uncertainties, with poor reproducibility between sample duplicates. Data do form regional patterns, however, consistent with theoretical systematics and corroborating previous observations: young Neogene ages occur immediately southeast of the Alpine Fault (the main plate boundary structure on which rocks are exhumed); partially reset ages occur in the central Southern Alps; and older Mesozoic ages occur further toward the southeast. Zircon apparent ages are older than apatite apparent ages for the equivalent method. Three-dimensional thermokinematic modeling of plate convergence incorporates advection of the upper Pacific plate along a low-angle detachment then up an Alpine Fault ramp, adopting a generally accepted tectonic scenario for the Southern Alps. The modeling incorporates heat flow, evolving topography, and the detailed kinetics of different thermochronometric systems and explains both complex local variations and regional patterns. Inclusion of the effects of radiation damage on He diffusion in detrital apatite is shown to have dramatic effects on results. Geometric and velocity parameters are tuned to fit model ages to observed data. Best fit is achieved at 9 mm a−1 plate convergence, with Pacific plate delamination on a gentle 10°SE dipping detachment and more rapid uplift on a 45–60° dipping Alpine Fault ramp from 15 km depth. Thermokinematic modeling suggests dip-slip motion on reverse faults within the Southern Alps should be highest ∼22 km from the Alpine Fault and much lower toward the southeast
Norm-Violation, Norm-Adherence, and Overeating
Two routes to overeating are discussed; they are both premised on people’s strong motivation to avoid eating excessively
and thereby avoid negative ascriptions associated with the overeating/overweight stereotype. The first route to overeating
involves infractions of restrictive intake norms: people who attempt to restrict their intake by implementing dietary
rules often run afoul of disinhibitory circumstances that undermine the self-control upon which successful dieting
depends. The second route to overeating involves adherence to restrictive intake norms in situations where it is unclear
how much eating is permitted. People search the environment for indicants of what constitutes permissible intake and
end up relying on such arbitrary criteria as portion size and the intake of other people. Using such criteria derived from
the eating situation often leads to overeating even while individuals believe that they are successfully restricting their intake

Quantitative trait loci mapping in dairy cattle: review and meta-analysis
From an extensive review of public domain information on dairy cattle quantitative trait loci (QTL), we have prepared a draft online QTL map for dairy production traits. Most publications (45 out of 55 reviewed) reported QTL for the major milk production traits (milk, fat and protein yield, and fat and protein concentration (%)) and somatic cell score. Relatively few QTL studies have been reported for more complex traits such as mastitis, fertility and health. The collated QTL map shows some chromosomal regions with a high density of QTL, as well as a substantial number of QTL at single chromosomal locations. To extract the most information from these published records, a meta-analysis was conducted to obtain consensus on QTL location and allelic substitution effect of these QTL. This required modification and development of statistical methodologies. The meta-analysis indicated a number of consensus regions, the most striking being two distinct regions affecting milk yield on chromosome 6 at 49 cM and 87 cM explaining 4.2 and 3.6 percent of the genetic variance of milk yield, respectively. The first of these regions (near marker BM143) affects five separate milk production traits (protein yield, protein percent, fat yield, fat percent, as well as milk yield)
Role of social environment and social clustering in spread of opinions in co-evolving networks
Taking a pragmatic approach to the processes involved in the phenomena of
collective opinion formation, we investigate two specific modifications to the
co-evolving network voter model of opinion formation, studied by Holme and
Newman [1]. First, we replace the rewiring probability parameter by a
distribution of probability of accepting or rejecting opinions between
individuals, accounting for the asymmetric influences in relationships among
individuals in a social group. Second, we modify the rewiring step by a
path-length-based preference for rewiring that reinforces local clustering. We
have investigated the influences of these modifications on the outcomes of the
simulations of this model. We found that varying the shape of the distribution
of probability of accepting or rejecting opinions can lead to the emergence of
two qualitatively distinct final states, one having several isolated connected
components each in internal consensus leading to the existence of diverse set
of opinions and the other having one single dominant connected component with
each node within it having the same opinion. Furthermore, and more importantly,
we found that the initial clustering in network can also induce similar
transitions. Our investigation also brings forward that these transitions are
governed by a weak and complex dependence on system size. We found that the
networks in the final states of the model have rich structural properties
including the small world property for some parameter regimes. [1] P. Holme and

White Lines and 3d-Occupancy for the 3d Transition-Metal Oxides
Electron energy-loss spectrometry was employed to measure the white lines at
the L23 absorption edges of the 3d transition-metal oxides and lithium
transition-metal oxides. The white-line ratio (L3/L2) was found to increase
between d^0 and d^5 and decrease between d^5 and d^10, consistent with previous
results for the transition metals and their oxides. The intensities of the
white lines, normalized to the post-edge background, are linear for the 3d
transition-metal oxides and lithium transition-metal oxides. An empirical
correlation between normalized white-line intensity and 3d occupancy is
established. It provides a method for measuring changes in the 3d-state
occupancy. As an example, this empirical relationship is used to measure
changes in the transition-metal valences of Li_{1-x}Ni_{0.8}Co_{0.2}O_2 in the
range of 0 < x < 0.64. In these experiments the 3d occupancy of the nickel ion
decreased upon lithium deintercalation, while the cobalt valence remained

‘‘Healthy,’’ ‘‘diet,’’ or ‘‘hedonic’’ : how nutrition claims affect food-related perceptions and intake?
The main purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of nutrition claims on food perceptions and intake among adult men and women, during ad libitum snacks. In a three (healthy vs. diet vs. hedonic) by two (normal-weight vs. overweight/obese) by two (unrestrained vs. restrained eaters) factorial design, 164 men and 188 women were invited to taste and rate oatmeal-raisin cookies. Despite the fact that the cookies were the same in all conditions, they were perceived as being healthier in the “healthy” condition than in the “diet” and “hedonic” conditions. The caloric content was estimated as higher by participants in the “hedonic” than in the “healthy” condition, by women than by men, and by restrained than by unrestrained eaters. Although measured ad libitum cookie intake did not differ as a function of experimental condition, overweight restrained men ate more than did women from each BMI and restraint category. Conversely, overweight restrained women ate less than did men from each BMI and restraint category. In conclusion, our manipulations of healthiness and “fatteningness” of food were effective in changing perceptions, but were not in changing behavior
