Multiple Osteochondromas: Clinicopathological and Genetic Spectrum and Suggestions for Clinical Management

    Get PDF
Multiple Osteochondromas is an autosomal dominant disorder characterised by the presence of multiple osteochondromas and a variety of orthopaedic deformities. Two genes causative of Multiple Osteochondromas, Exostosin-1 (EXT1) and Exostosin-2 (EXT2), have been identified, which act as tumour suppressor genes. Osteochondroma can progress towards its malignant counterpart, secondary peripheral chondrosarcoma and therefore adequate follow-up of Multiple Osteochondroma patients is important in order to detect malignant transformation early

Knowledge-Attitudes-Practices About Malaria Among Communities in Southern Benin

Malaria still remains the main public health problem in Benin. We explored the determinants that influenced malaria treatment as well as protective behaviors, to generate a framework of useful ideas as alternative strategies against malaria. A cross-sectional survey of the knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) was conducted at Hozin, Vakon and Agblangandan districts in southern region of Benin. Descriptive statistics were computed and mixed logistic regression helped evaluating the relationship between frequency of each category of severity of malaria and sex group, educational level, treatment, means of self-protection against mosquitoes and identification of the cause of malaria. A significant proportion 750 (81.3%) (p<0.001) of participants stated that malaria was caused by mosquitoes. The respondents who mentioned sun as the cause of malaria, have trivialized more malaria in a proportion of about 59.30% (OR=2.67 [95% CI 1.61-4.44]) followed by those who have reported the cause of body weakness (43.68%) (OR=2.97 [95% CI 1.68-5.28]). Poor knowledge justifies the trivialization of the disease and poor management of malaria control means. National Malaria Control Programs should improve access to education, especially for women and could help improving prevention and control behaviours against malaria in communities

Incest in the 1990s: reading Anais Nin's 'Father Story'

    Get PDF
In the summer of 1933, diarist, author and critic Anaïs Nin joined her father for a short vacation in France. Nin wrote about the trip in her diary afterwards, referring to it as the ‘Father Story.’ In the story, she details how, aged 30, she embarked upon an affair with her father which would last for several months. Rather than displaying the signs of trauma that we have come to expect from the incest narrative such as dissociation, blame and recrimination, the ‘Father Story’ is more ambiguous in its tone. Part-tribute to the father, part-seduction narrative, part-confession, this is a story that resists categorisation – a resistance that has ethical, critical and formal ramifications for our reading of incest narratives. Upon its publication in the early 1990s, critics responded to the ‘Father Story’ as fantastical, excessive and vulgar. These responses form part of a wider American father story during this period; a story about memory, therapy culture, family values and the concealed rules of testimony. This article reads Anaïs Nin’s narrative as a text which raises fundamental questions about why certain father (and daughter) stories are culturally acceptable and others are not

Colocasia Esculenta is an ancestral food that has been of vital importance for feeding rural populations with high levels of poverty, since it contributes to food security and the remains are used to feed animals present in the backyard. In Colombia little is known about this crop, apart from the importance it represents for indigenous communities, consequently, this tuber is downplayed, therefore it loses value and is replaced by other imported products. In this sense, the objective of this research was to implement pedagogical strategies focused on sustainable agriculture related to the Colocasia Esculenta for the families of the Pambil community, in the Gran Sábalo reservation, department of Nariño. The methodology has a mixed approach, descriptive and with an action research design. Among the main results, it was found that the participants have a greater degree of knowledge regarding the cultivation and harvest of the Colocasia Esculenta, however, this was not the same in the knowledge or social and cultural valuation of this natural resource. To address this situation, an educational strategy was implemented with the aim of improving the comprehensive appreciation of Colocasia Esculenta. This process included diversified pedagogical activities. Ultimately, the implementation of this educational strategy proved to have a positive impact on the historical, agronomic, social and cultural valuation of Colocasia Esculenta.
