    Towards critical cultural and linguistic awareness in language classrooms in Norway: Developing intercultural citizenship through identity texts

    This article reports the results of a school-based curriculum development project that aimed to support language teachers working with culturally and linguistically diverse student populations in Norway to develop teaching strategies that foster intercultural citizenship and multilingual competence. Three university researchers collaborated with two schools to increase mutual respect and tolerance for cultural and linguistic diversity in language classrooms, to increase awareness of the positive impact of home language maintenance on academic performance, and to improve the engagement of multilingual literacy and student identity in the classroom. Data were collected during teacher workshops and while following the delivery of the project, and consist of lesson planning materials, texts produced by students, and a follow-up teacher survey. The article presents examples of activities and materials the teachers at the cooperating schools designed and implemented, samples of student work, as well as teacher reflections on the extent to which the project promoted multiliteracy and intercultural citizenship. The findings suggest that while the project helped strengthen awareness of cultural and linguistic diversity at the schools, understanding of the relevance of the home language to literacy development and academic success and multiliteracy were not adequately supported. Implications for future work to promote language classrooms that foster linguistic and cultural diversity and multiliteracy are discussed

    Factors affecting the provision of high-quality postnatal care services in Zanzibar: a qualitative study

    Abstract Background In Sub-Saharan Africa, the postnatal period is associated with high mortality and accounts for a substantial proportion of maternal deaths. Although postnatal care has been identified as critical in reducing maternal mortality, the quality of care provided is often inadequate. Tanzania and Zanzibar have not made sufficient progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals on maternal health, and there is limited knowledge about the utilization and quality of postnatal follow-up. The aim of this study was therefore to explore factors affecting the provision of high-quality postnatal care services in the urban area of Zanzibar. Methods Five focus group discussions were performed in Swahili with 25 healthcare providers from primary healthcare units in urban Zanzibar. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, translated into English, and analysed using qualitative content analysis with an inductive approach. Results Factors affecting provision of high-quality postpartum care services could be divided into three generic categories. Difficulty achieving high attendance comprised three subcategories: long waiting times, low awareness among women, and out-of-pocket payment. Lack of basic resources also comprised three subcategories: shortage of healthcare providers, lack of adequate space, and inadequate medical equipment. Insufficient care routines comprised two subcategories: lack of guidelines and deficient chain of information. Conclusions The present findings suggest that the women’s perceptions of postnatal care do not align with the intended purpose of routine postnatal care. Instead, the postnatal period primarily leads to visits to health facilities only when urgent care is required, and there is a lack of awareness about the importance of postnatal care. Moreover, limited resources, including equipment, staff, and space, as well as long waiting times, hinder the delivery of high-quality care and contribute to a negative reputation of postnatal care services. To effectively reach all women and improve postnatal care, it is necessary to increase basic resources, modify health education approaches, and enhance the flow of information between different levels of care using context-specific strategies

    The iodine content of Faroese food items to support iodine nutrition in the North Atlantic

    ABSTRACTIodine is essential for human health, and dietary iodine sources are critical. Living isolated on islands in the North Atlantic Ocean fostered unique dietary traditions in the Faroe Islands. The dietary peculiarities led us to collect and measure the iodine content of local foods and beverages and calculate daily iodine intakes based on four Faroese dietary scenarios. Marine foods and birds had iodine contents from 300 µg/kg and up, markedly higher than dairy, grains, terrestrial, vegetables, and liquid foods (p<0.001). Vegetables and beverages contained negligible iodine. Wind-dried fermented lamb meat iodine content varied by 100% depending on whether it was herded on an island with beaches (105 µg/kg) or with cliffs (53 µg/kg) facing the ocean. The daily iodine intake varied from around 50 µg to just over 200 µg with diets rich in fish and whales. In conclusion, the traditional diet has been a critical source of iodine on the Faroe Islands. The Faroese may be iodine replete with traditional diets but face the risk of iodine deficiency with dietary transition towards a more western diet. Locally produced Faroese foods are therefore relevant to promote health, and may additionally support food security, local involvement and knowledge, and long-term sustainability
