Multivariate morphometric analysis of Apis cerana of southern mainland Asia
Multivariate morphometric analyses were performed on a series of worker honeybees, Apis cerana, representing 557 colonies from all of southern mainland Asia extending from Afghanistan to Vietnam south of the Himalayas. Scores from the principal components analysis revealed five statistically separable but not entirely distinct morphoclusters of bees: (1) the Hindu Kush, Kashmir, N. Myanmar, N. Vietnam and S. China; (2) Himachal Pradesh region of N. India; (3) N. India, Nepal; (4) central and S. Myanmar and Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, S. China and peninsular Malaysia; (5) central and S. India. The major morphoclusters are distributed coherently with the different climatic zones of the region. While populations are definable, nomenclatural adjustments remain for the future
A CD11d monoclonal antibody treatment reduces tissue injury and improves neurological outcome after fluid percussion brain injury in rats
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is an international health concern often resulting in chronic neurological abnormalities, including cognitive deficits, emotional disturbances, and motor impairments. An anti-CD11d monoclonal antibody that blocks the CD11d/CD18 integrin and vascular cell adhesion molecule (VCAM)-1 interaction following experimental spinal cord injury improves functional recovery, while reducing the intraspinal number of neutrophils and macrophages, oxidative activity, and tissue damage. Since the mechanisms of secondary injury in the brain and spinal cord are similar, we designed a study to evaluate fully the effects of anti-CD11d treatment after a moderate lateral fluid percussion TBI in the rat. Rats were treated at 2 h after TBI with either the anti-CD11d antibody or an isotype-matched control antibody 1B7, and both short (24-to 72-h) and long (4-week) recovery periods were examined. The anti-CD11d integrin treatment reduced neutrophil and macrophage levels in the injured brain, with concomitant reductions in lipid peroxidation, astrocyte activation, amyloid precursor protein accumulation, and neuronal loss. The reduced neuroinflammation seen in anti-CD11d-treated rats correlated with improved performance on a number of behavioral tests. At 24 h, the anti-CD11d group performed significantly better than the 1B7 controls on several water maze measures of spatial cognition. At 4 weeks post-injury the anti-CD11d-treated rats had better sensorimotor function as assessed by the beam task, and reduced anxiety-like behaviors, as evidenced by elevated-plus maze testing, compared to 1B7 controls. These findings suggest that neuroinflammation is associated with behavioral deficits after TBI, and that anti-CD11d antibody treatment is a viable strategy to improve neurological outcomes after TBI. © 2012, Mary Ann Liebert, Inc
"I'm a bit concerned" - early actions and psychological constructions in a child protection helpline
This article analyzes early actions in 50 calls reporting cases of abuse to a national child protection helpline in the UK (the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children Helpline, NSPCC). It focuses on the early turns in the caller's reason for call, in particular, a class of constructions in which the caller describes himself or herself as "concerned about x" (or similar). Analysis of the corpus of calls suggests concern constructions are canonical early elements of the reason-for-call sequence. Concern constructions (a) are oriented to a pre-move in the caller's reason for call, (b) project the unpacking of concerns in a way oriented to the NSPCCs institutional role, (c) attend to epistemological asymmetries between caller and call taker and remove the requirement for disaffiliative next actions such as asking for the basis of claims, (d) provide a way for the Child Protection Officer to take abuse claims seriously while not presupposing their truth, and (e) display an appropriate caller stance. These observations are supported by an analysis of deviant cases. The broader implications of this study for the relation between psychology, interaction, and institutions are discussed
Temperature dependence in interatomic potentials and an improved potential for Ti
The process of deriving an interatomic potentials represents an attempt to
integrate out the electronic degrees of freedom from the full quantum
description of a condensed matter system. In practice it is the derivatives of
the interatomic potentials which are used in molecular dynamics, as a model for
the forces on a system. These forces should be the derivative of the free
energy of the electronic system, which includes contributions from the entropy
of the electronic states. This free energy is weakly temperature dependent, and
although this can be safely neglected in many cases there are some systems
where the electronic entropy plays a significant role. Here a method is
proposed to incorporate electronic entropy in the Sommerfeld approximation into
empirical potentials. The method is applied as a correction to an existing
potential for titanium. Thermal properties of the new model are calculated, and
a simple method for fixing the melting point and solid-solid phase transition
temperature for existing models fitted to zero temperature data is presented.Comment: CCP 201

The Parkes Observatory Pulsar Data Archive
The Parkes pulsar data archive currently provides access to 144044 data files
obtained from observations carried out at the Parkes observatory since the year
1991. Around 10^5 files are from surveys of the sky, the remainder are
observations of 775 individual pulsars and their corresponding calibration
signals. Survey observations are included from the Parkes 70cm and the
Swinburne Intermediate Latitude surveys. Individual pulsar observations are
included from young pulsar timing projects, the Parkes Pulsar Timing Array and
from the PULSE@Parkes outreach program. The data files and access methods are
compatible with Virtual Observatory protocols. This paper describes the data
currently stored in the archive and presents ways in which these data can be
