Classical Phase Space Revealed by Coherent Light
We study the far field characteristics of oval-resonator laser diodes made of
an AlGaAs/GaAs quantum well. The resonator shapes are various oval geometries,
thereby probing chaotic and mixed classical dynamics. The far field pattern
shows a pronounced fine structure that strongly depends on the cavity shape.
Comparing the experimental data with ray-model simulations for a Fresnel
billiard yields convincing agreement for all geometries and reveals the
importance of the underlying classical phase space for the lasing
characteristics.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures (reduced quality), accepted for publication in

Non-Hamiltonian dynamics in optical microcavities resulting from wave-inspired corrections to geometric optics
We introduce and investigate billiard systems with an adjusted ray dynamics
that accounts for modifications of the conventional reflection of rays due to
universal wave effects. We show that even small modifications of the specular
reflection law have dramatic consequences on the phase space of classical
billiards. These include the creation of regions of non-Hamiltonian dynamics,
the breakdown of symmetries, and changes in the stability and morphology of
periodic orbits. Focusing on optical microcavities, we show that our adjusted
dynamics provides the missing ray counterpart to previously observed wave
phenomena and we describe how to observe its signatures in experiments. Our
findings also apply to acoustic and ultrasound waves and are important in all
situations where wavelengths are comparable to system sizes, an increasingly
likely situation considering the systematic reduction of the size of electronic
and photonic devices.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, final published versio
Anisotropic Diffusion Limited Aggregation
Using stochastic conformal mappings we study the effects of anisotropic
perturbations on diffusion limited aggregation (DLA) in two dimensions. The
harmonic measure of the growth probability for DLA can be conformally mapped
onto a constant measure on a unit circle. Here we map preferred directions
for growth of angular width to a distribution on the unit circle which
is a periodic function with peaks in such that the width
of each peak scales as , where defines the
``strength'' of anisotropy along any of the chosen directions. The two
parameters map out a parameter space of perturbations that allows a
continuous transition from DLA (for or ) to needle-like fingers
as . We show that at fixed the effective fractal dimension of
the clusters obtained from mass-radius scaling decreases with
increasing from to a value bounded from below by
. Scaling arguments suggest a specific form for the dependence
of the fractal dimension on for large , form which compares
favorably with numerical results.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Orthogonality catastrophe and Kondo effect in graphene
Anderson's orthogonality catastrophe in graphene, at energies close to the
Dirac point, is analyzed. It is shown that, in clean systems, the orthogonality
catastrophe is suppressed, due to the vanishing density of states at the Dirac
point. In the presence of preexisting localized states at the Dirac energy, the
orthogonality catastrophe shows similar features to those found in normal
metals with a finite density of states at the Fermi level. The implications for
the Kondo effect induced by magnetic impurities, and for the Fermi edge
singularities in tunneling processes are also discussed.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure
Diffusion Limited Aggregation with Power-Law Pinning
Using stochastic conformal mapping techniques we study the patterns emerging
from Laplacian growth with a power-law decaying threshold for growth
(where is the radius of the particle cluster). For
the growth pattern is in the same universality class as diffusion
limited aggregation (DLA) growth, while for the resulting patterns
have a lower fractal dimension than a DLA cluster due to the
enhancement of growth at the hot tips of the developing pattern. Our results
indicate that a pinning transition occurs at , significantly
smaller than might be expected from the lower bound
of multifractal spectrum of DLA. This limiting case shows that the most
singular tips in the pruned cluster now correspond to those expected for a
purely one-dimensional line. Using multifractal analysis, analytic expressions
are established for both close to the breakdown of DLA universality
class, i.e., , and close to the pinning transition, i.e.,
.Comment: 5 pages, e figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Force Distributions in Frictional Granular Media
We report a joint experimental and theoretical investigation of the
probability distribution functions (pdf's) of the normal and tangential
(frictional) forces in amorphous frictional media. We consider both the joint
pdf of normal and tangential forces together, and the marginal pdf's of normal
forces separately and tangential forces separately. A maximum entropy formalism
is utilized for all these cases after identifying the appropriate constraints.
Excellent agreements with both experimental and simulational data are reported.
The proposed joint pdf (which appears new to the literature) predicts giant
slip events at low pressures, again in agreement with observations.Comment: 13 pages, 15 figure
Draft Genome Sequences of "Candidatus Synechococcus spongiarum," Cyanobacterial Symbionts of the Mediterranean Sponge Aplysina aerophoba
We report here four draft genome sequences belonging to clade F of the cyanobacterium “Candidatus Synechococcus spongiarum” of the marine sponge Aplysina aerophoba, which were collected from two nearby locations in the northern Adriatic Sea. The sequences provide the basis for within-clade comparisons between members of this widespread group of cyanobacterial sponge symbionts
