A study of two seed-borne Alternaria diseases on choumoellier : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Agricultural Science at Massey University
The livestock industry in New Zealand is based on a pastoral farming economy, an important aspect of which is the utilisation of fodder crops as supplementary feed during seasons of poor pasture growth. Playing an important role in this regard are the two selections of choumoellier
(Brassica oleracea var. acephala D.C.) usually referred to as giant choumoellier and medium stemmed choumoellier.
The growing importance of choumoellier in feed crop rotations is indicated by the increased area sown, from 8,000 acres in 1933 to 130,000 acres in 1963 (New Zealand Farm Production Statistics, 1962-63). In the past, choumoellier seed has been imported from the United Kingdom, but more recently
the trend has been to promote locally grown seed. At the present time New Zealand's requirements are met in most years by South Island growers producing seed under the authority of a Government seed certification scheme.
In discussing brassica crops in New Zealand, Palmer (1966) stated that - "apart from weather variations, the main
uncontrollable causes of yield variations are fungus diseases, insect pests and associated virus diseases''• Seven fungus
diseases are recorded in
New Zealand on choumoellier (Table 1),
five of which are evidenced by foliage lesioning in field stands
What the hack is a hacker?
The purpose of this study is to examine the historical tendencies and characteristics of hackers to create a holistic definition of what it means to be a hacker. By analyzing the contents of the “Hacker Classics” list, it was determined that there is not a single, all-encompassing definition of what it means to be a hacker. Although there are common motivations and ideologies shared between many hackers, the definition of “hacker” continues to change as time and technology does
Abundance: a new high-yielding storage-type hybrid onion
On Dec. 1, 1953, the Iowa and Idaho agricultural experiment stations and the United States Department of Agriculture, cooperating, announced the release of the F1 hybrid onion, Abundance, pedigree B 2108 x B 2215 . This is a long-day exceptionally high-yielding storage-type hybrid. The bulb is a high globe, light yellow in color. Abundance should find acceptance as a yellow globe type for limited storage where Early Yellow Globe is adapted.https://lib.dr.iastate.edu/specialreports/1001/thumbnail.jp

Specific treatment and outcome of urethrorectal fistula associated with type 1 atresia ani in a juvenile male dog
A four-month-old, entire male, German wirehaired pointer presented with tenesmus due to type I atresia ani and with urination observed through this stenosed anal opening. A positive contrast retrograde urethrogram demonstrated a urethrorectal fistula and stricture of the penile urethra. Urine culture revealed heavy mixed bacterial growth, which was treated with appropriate antibiotics. Surgical correction of the congenital urethrorectal fistula was performed via a perineal approach with a 3.5 French catheter placed retrograde into the fistula to facilitate its dissection. The anal stenosis was addressed by surgical anoplasty and the urethral stricture via a scrotal urethrostomy. The dog recovered well with the owner reporting complete resolution of the clinical signs and urination via the urethrostomy site at six months postoperatively. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first reported case of congenital urethrorectal fistula associated with type 1 atresia ani in a male dog
Equity in Financing Health Care Services in Nigeria
Health care services in Nigeria are mainly financed through out-of-pocket payment. This study investigated the extent to which payments towards health care are related to ability to pay and if poor households make proportionally more out-of-pocket payment on health. In analyzing this, the study utilized data from the General household survey of the National Bureau of statistics of 2014. The study employed the Kakwani progressivity index in analyzing the objectives of the study. The findings from the study shows a regressive out-of-pocket payment which suggests that payments towards healthcare are not related to ability to pay. The result also shows that the poor households make proportionally more out-of-pocket payment. Keywords: Out-of-Pocket payments, Ability to Pay, Kakwani Progressivity Inde
Health insurance and the financial implications of sickle cell disease among parents of affected children attending a tertiary facility in Lagos, south-west Nigeria
Introduction: there is a paucity of data on the financial implications of sickle cell disease on households of affected children and their use of health insurance in Nigeria. This study assessed the awareness of health insurance, patterns of health service utilization and financial implications of sickle cell disease among children seeking care at a tertiary facility in Nigeria.
Methods: a structured questionnaire was administered to parents of 314 children with sickle cell disease attending the pediatric hematology unit of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital between May and December 2019.
Results: mean age of the children was 91.5 ± 43.1 months. M:F was 1.17:1. 45.5% of households earned above NGN 150,000 (USD 417) monthly. 71.3% of the parents had heard of health insurance but only 20.7% were enrolled in a health insurance scheme. Awareness of health insurance was significantly associated with social class (p=0.000) and monthly household income (p=0.000). 60.8% of the parents preferred pre-facility treatment. Social class (p=0.01) and monthly household income (p=0.001) were significantly associated with home treatment. Time on admission ranged from 2-18 days with an average of 4.31 days. Average cost of hospitalization was USD 148 ± USD 14.2 and total cost of care incurred was USD 20,787. Neither age of child (p=0.857), estimated household income (p=0.863) nor social class (p=0.397) was associated with cost of care.
Conclusion: a high cost of care was observed in our study population underscoring the need for increased awareness and access to health insurance for households of children with sickle cell disease
