    Transient chaos and resonant phase mixing in violent relaxation

    This paper explores how orbits in a galactic potential can be impacted by large amplitude time-dependences of the form that one might associate with galaxy or halo formation or strong encounters between pairs of galaxies. A period of time-dependence with a strong, possibly damped, oscillatory component can give rise to large amounts of transient chaos, and it is argued that chaotic phase mixing associated with this transient chaos could play a major role in accounting for the speed and efficiency of violent relaxation. Analysis of simple toy models involving time-dependent perturbations of an integrable Plummer potential indicates that this chaos results from a broad, possibly generic, resonance between the frequencies of the orbits and harmonics thereof and the frequencies of the time-dependent perturbation. Numerical computations of orbits in potentials exhibiting damped oscillations suggest that, within a period of 10 dynamical times t_D or so, one could achieve simultaneously both `near-complete' chaotic phase mixing and a nearly time-independent, integrable end state.Comment: 11 pages and 12 figures: an extended version of the original manuscript, containing a modified title, one new figure, and approximately one page of additional text, to appear in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Societ

    Evaluation of directionally solidified eutectic superalloys for turbine blade applications

    Alloys from the following systems were selected for property evaluation: (1) gamma/gamma-Mo (Ni-base, rods of Mo); (2) gamma-beta (Ni-base, lamellae or rods of (Ni, Fe/Co Al); and (3) gamma-gamma (Ni-base rods of Ni3Al gamma). The three alloys were subjected to longitudinal and transverse tensile and rupture tests from 750 C to 1100 C, longitudinal shear strength was measured at several temperatures, resistance to thermal cycling to 1150 C was determined, cyclic oxidation resistance was evaluated at 750 C and 1100 C, and each system was directionally solidified in an alumina shell mold turbine shape to evaluate mold/metal reactivity. The gamma/gamma Mo system has good rupture resistance, transverse properties and processability, and is a high potential system for turbine blades. The gamma-beta system has good physical properties and oxidation resistance, and is a potential system for turbine vanes. The gamma-gamma system has good high temperature rupture resistance and requires further exploratory research

    The role of M cells and the long QT syndrome in cardiac arrhythmias: simulation studies of reentrant excitations using a detailed electrophysiological model

    In this numerical study, we investigate the role of intrinsic heterogeneities of cardiac tissue due to M cells in the generation and maintenance of reentrant excitations using the detailed Luo-Rudy dynamic model. This model has been extended to include a description of the long QT 3 syndrome, and is studied in both one dimension, corresponding to a cable traversing the ventricular wall, and two dimensions, representing a transmural slice. We focus on two possible mechanisms for the generation of reentrant events. We first investigate if early-after-depolarizations occurring in M cells can initiate reentry. We find that, even for large values of the long QT strength, the electrotonic coupling between neighboring cells prevents early-after-depolarizations from creating a reentry. We then study whether M cell domains, with their slow repolarization, can function as wave blocks for premature stimuli. We find that the inclusion of an M cell domain can result in some cases in reentrant excitations and we determine the lifetime of the reentry as a function of the size and geometry of the domain and of the strength of the long QT syndrome

    Abundances of Disk Planetary Nebulae in M31 and the Radial Oxygen Gradient

    We have obtained spectra of 16 planetary nebulae in the disk of M31 and determined the abundances of He, N, O, Ne, S and Ar. Here we present the median abundances and compare them with previous M31 PN disk measurements and with PNe in the Milky Way. We also derive the radial oxygen gradient in M31, which is shallower than that in the Milky Way, even accounting for M31's larger disk scale length.Comment: 2 pages, 1 figure, 1 table, to appear in the proceedings of IAU Symposium No. 283, Planetary Nebulae: An Eye to the Futur

    Management of plant health risks associated with processing of plant-based wastes: A review

    The rise in international trade of plants and plant products has increased the risk of introduction and spread of plant pathogens and pests. In addition, new risks are arising from the implementation of more environmentally friendly methods of biodegradable waste disposal, such as composting and anaerobic digestion. As these disposal methods do not involve sterilisation, there is good evidence that certain plant pathogens and pests can survive these processes. The temperature/time profile of the disposal process is the most significant and easily defined factor in controlling plant pathogens and pests. In this review, the current evidence for temperature/time effects on plant pathogens and pests is summarised. The advantages and disadvantages of direct and indirect process validation for the verification of composting processes, to determine their efficacy in destroying plant pathogens and pests in biowaste, are discussed. The availability of detection technology and its appropriateness for assessing the survival of quarantine organisms is also reviewed

    The author has identified the following significant results. The Cement oil field, Oklahoma, was a test site for an experiment designed to evaluate LANDSAT's capability to detect an alteration zone in surface rocks caused by hydrocarbon microseepage. Loss of iron and impregnation of sandstone by carbonate cements and replacement of gypsum by calcite were the major alteration phenomena at Cement. The bedrock alterations were partially masked by unaltered overlying beds, thick soils, and dense natural and cultivated vegetation. Interpreters, biased by detailed ground truth, were able to map the alteration zone subjectively using a magnified, filtered, and sinusoidally stretched LANDSAT composite image; other interpreters, unbiased by ground truth data, could not duplicate that interpretation
