    Professional Songwriting: Creativity, the Creative Process and tensions between higher education songwriting and industry practice in the U.K.

    Musical creativity has been scrutinised from a variety of perspectives (Burnard, 2012); however, research into the creation of songs remains limited (Bennett, 2013). This chapter presents research that explores the creative process of songwriting. Two contrasting perspectives are considered: a professional songwriting team and a student songwriting team, both working to the same ‘real-world’ brief. Key findings reveal that both teams worked in a similar way in terms of the procedure of songwriting, but that there were great differences in the way that each team searched for and selected ideas, and evaluated the emerging song. We question why these differences occurred, offering a discussion of the context and role of songwriting in the curriculum in relation to the growing trend placing entrepreneurialism and creativity at the centre of Higher Education (HE) agendas (Odena & Welch, 2013)

    Phonon-phason coupling in icosahedral quasicrystals

    From relaxation simulations of decoration-based quasicrystal structure models using microscopically based interatomic pair potentials, we have calculated the (usually neglected) phonon-phason coupling constant. Its sign is opposite for the two alloys studied, i-AlMn and i-(Al,Cu)Li; a dimensionless measure of its magnitude relative to the phonon and phason elastic constants is of order 1/10, suggesting its effects are small but detectable.     Probing the wind-wind collision in Gamma Velorum with high-resolution Chandra X-ray spectroscopy: evidence for sudden radiative braking and non-equilibrium ionization

    We present a new analysis of an archived Chandra HETGS X-ray spectrum of the WR+O colliding wind binary Gamma Velorum. The spectrum is dominated by emission lines from astrophysically abundant elements: Ne, Mg, Si, S and Fe. From a combination of broad-band spectral analysis and an analysis of line flux ratios we infer a wide range of temperatures in the X-ray emitting plasma (~4-40 MK). As in the previously published analysis, we find the X-ray emission lines are essentially unshifted, with a mean FWHM of 1240 +/- 30 km/s. Calculations of line profiles based on hydrodynamical simulations of the wind-wind collision predict lines that are blueshifted by a few hundred km/s. The lack of any observed shift in the lines may be evidence of a large shock-cone opening half-angle (> 85 degrees), and we suggest this may be evidence of sudden radiative braking. From the R and G ratios measured from He-like forbidden-intercombination-resonance triplets we find evidence that the Mg XI emission originates from hotter gas closer to the O star than the Si XIII emission, which suggests that non-equilibrium ionization may be present.Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures.     Phason elasticity of a three-dimensional quasicrystal: transfer-matrix method

    We introduce a new transfer matrix method for calculating the thermodynamic properties of random-tiling models of quasicrystals in any number of dimensions, and describe how it may be used to calculate the phason elastic properties of these models, which are related to experimental measurables such as phason Debye-Waller factors, and diffuse scattering wings near Bragg peaks. We apply our method to the canonical-cell model of the icosahedral phase, making use of results from a previously-presented calculation in which the possible structures for this model under specific periodic boundary conditions were cataloged using a computational technique. We give results for the configurational entropy density and the two fundamental elastic constants for a range of system sizes.     Spin of ground state baryons

    We calculate the quark spin contribution to the total angular momentum of flavor octet and flavor decuplet ground state baryons using a spin-flavor symmetry based parametrization method of quantum chromodynamics. We find that third order SU(6) symmetry breaking three-quark operators are necessary to explain the experimental result Sigma_1=0.32(10). For spin 3/2 decuplet baryons we predict that the quark spin contribution is Sigma_3=3.93(22), i.e. considerably larger than their total angular momentum.Comment: 8 page

    Lucid dreaming and personality in children/adolescents and adults: The UK library study

    Research that has focused on the relationship between the Big Five personality dimensions and lucid dreaming frequency has been restricted to student samples. The present study included adolescents and adults (N = 1375). i.e., the sample included a large range of ages. Lucid dreaming was more strongly related to openness to experiences compared to previous findings. The small but significant negative correlation between conscientiousness and lucid dreaming should be followed up by studies relating the Big Five personality factors to the contents of lucid dreams
