    The effects of lightning in shallow coal mines: an engineering study.

    A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Engineering, University of the Witwatersrand, in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Electrical Engineering.Lightning causes electrical shocks to people, the premature ignition of explosives, and the ignition of methane underground in coal mines. This study examines this problem using a theoretical study and the results of an extensive measurement programme that was conducted in several coal mines. The work that has been done, particularly in South Africa, is also reviewed. Two mechanisms are responsible for the penetration of lightning surge currents into the underground workings. A direct strike to the service structures leading into a shaft is one of the two mechanisms, and the second is that resulting from lightning strikes to the strata above the underground workings. The frequency and amplitude with which such surges can be expected is quantified using the theoretical study. This model correlates well with the observed frequencies of the empirical studies. The sensitivity of methane to lightning-type sparks is investigated. Currents as low as 10 rnA have been proved to be capable of igniting methane. The sensitivity of conventional detonators is also investigated. The thesis proposes a generalised test which can be applied to both the low-impedance protection method and a high-impedance protection method. The test methodologies have been generalised to make provision for any new innovative detonators that may be used by the industry. A risk evaluation of mines is developed which allows a mine to be categorised according to the likelihood of lightning causing an accident in a mine.     Relation nets and hypernets

    In many respects this report is a companion work of our book "Knowledge representation and relation nets. Kluwer Academic Publishers, Boston, 1999". In some senses it runs parallel to it, while in others it is a sequel to that book. Readers not familiar with the book will find themselves refering back to it several instances to follow some of the subtleties of this work, particularly in the case of concept-relationship knowledge stuctures, abbreviated CRKS in what follows. The main application of CRKS's - namely modelling study material - is not explicitly transscribed to this paper, but that whole notion is abstracted and made independent of any specific teaching/learning metalanguage through the implications of this abstraction. Two key factors emerge from this paper on hypernets. First, unlike the case for CRKS's in which little of the general theory of relation nets applies to CRKS's, the broad theory of hypernets, as far as it is covered in this report, is often applicable to the hypernet equivalent of a CRKS. Second, we will show a link between relation net isomorphism and hypernet isomorphism which makes it considerably easier to deal with CRKS isomorphism and, thus, with structural analogy as used in a modelling based approach to teaching/learning/analogical reasoning. Finally, we must mention that it appears that the domain of potential practical applications of hypernets must inevitably be wider than that for relation nets

    Modelling Knowledge Systems using Relation Nets and Hypernets

    In the book "Knowledge Representation and Relation Nets" we introduced a structural model called a Relation Net and a special relation net called a Concept Relationship Knowledge Structure (CRKS). In this work we broaden the notion of a relation net to produce a new but associated structural model, a Hypernet. We show that the general theory of hypernets has applications in the acquisition/learning, representation, retrieval, accommodation and assimilation, management and communication/teaching of knowledge, and also in problem representation and solution and in modelling the various modes of reasoning.     Disruption in the regulation of immune responses in the placental subtype of preeclampsia

    Preeclampsia is a pregnancy-specific disorder, of which one of its major subtypes, the placental subtype is considered a response to an ischemic placental environment, impacting fetal growth and pregnancy outcome. Inflammatory immune responses have been linked to metabolic and inflammatory disorders as well as reproductive failures. In healthy pregnancy, immune regulatory mechanisms prevent excessive systemic inflammation. However, in preeclampsia, the regulation of immune responses is disrupted as a result of aberrant activation of innate immune cells and imbalanced differentiation of T-helper cell subsets creating a cytotoxic environment in utero. Recognition events that facilitate immune interaction between maternal decidual T cells, NK cells, and cytotrophoblasts are considered an indirect cause of the incomplete remodeling of spiral arteries in preeclampsia. The mechanisms involved include the activation of immune cells and the subsequent secretion of cytokines and placental growth factors affecting trophoblast invasion, angiogenesis, and eventually placentation. In this review, we focus on the role of excessive systemic inflammation as the result of a dysregulated immune system in the development of preeclampsia. These include insufficient control of inflammation, failure of tolerance toward paternal antigens at the fetal–maternal interface, and subsequent over- or insufficient activation of immune mediators. It is also possible that external stimuli, such as bacterial endotoxin, may contribute to the excessive systemic inflammation in preeclampsia by stimulating the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines. In conclusion, a disrupted immune system might be a predisposing factor or result of placental oxidative stress or excessive inflammation in preeclampsia.     Diversity of the gut, vaginal and oral microbiome among pregnant women in South Africa with and without pre-eclampsia

However, there is a paucity of information regarding the taxonomic composition and/or diversity of microbial communities in pre-eclampsia. The aim of this study was to determine the diversity of the gut, vaginal and oral microbiome in a cohort of South African pregnant women with and without pre-eclampsia. The diversity of the gut, vaginal and oral microbiome was determined by targeted next generation sequencing (NGS) of the V3 and V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene on the Illumina MiSeq platform. RESULTS : In this study population, pre-eclampsia was associated with a significantly higher alpha diversity (P = 0.0472; indicated by the Shannon index) in the vaginal microbiome accompanied with a significant reduction in Lactobacillus spp. (P = 0.0275), compared to normotensive pregnant women. Lactobacillus iners was identified as the predominant species of the vaginal microbiome in both cohorts. High inter-individual variation in alpha diversity was observed in the gut and oral microbiome in both cohorts. Although differences in the relative abundance of bacteria at all phylogenetic levels were observed, overall microbial composition of the gut, oral and vaginalmicrobiome was not significantly different in the pre-eclampsia cohort compared to the normotensive cohort. CONCLUSION : Collectively, a reduction of Lactobacillus spp., and predominance of L. iners in pregnant women with pre-eclampsia could suggest an unstable vaginal microbiome that might predispose pregnant women to develop pre- eclampsia. The lack of significant structural changes in the gut, oral and vaginal microbiome does not suggest that the characterized communities play a role in pre-eclampsia, but could indicate a characteristic unique to the study population. The current study provided novel information on the diversity of the gut, oral and vaginal microbiome among pregnant women in South Africa with and without pre-eclampsia.     Texture synthesis using convolutional neural networks with long-range consistency and spectral constraints

    Procedural texture generation enables the creation of more rich and detailed virtual environments without the help of an artist. However, finding a flexible generative model of real world textures remains an open problem. We present a novel Convolutional Neural Network based texture model consisting of two summary statistics (the Gramian and Translation Gramian matrices), as well as spectral constraints. We investigate the Fourier Transform or Window Fourier Transform in applying spectral constraints, and find that the Window Fourier Transform improved the quality of the generated textures. We demonstrate the efficacy of our system by comparing generated output with that of related state of the art systems.</p
