Mercury Levels in Marine and Estuarine Fishes of Florida 1989–2001. 2nd edition revised
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Florida Marine Research Institute (FWC-FMRI) has
examined total mercury levels in muscle tissue from a variety of economically and ecologically important species
as part of an ongoing study to better understand mercury contamination in marine fishes.The FWC-FMRI Mercury
Program is one of the most comprehensive programs in the United States for monitoring mercury levels in
marine and estuarine fishes. Because mercury, a toxic metallic element, has been shown to bioaccumulate in fish
tissue, humans consuming fish can potentially consume significant levels of mercury.We examined the concentration
of total mercury in 6,806 fish, representing 108 species from 40 families. Species represented all major trophic
groups, from primary consumers to apex predators.The majority of individuals we examined contained low concentrations
of mercury, but concentrations in individual fish varied greatly within and among species. Species
with very low mean or median mercury concentrations tended to be planktivores, detritivores, species that feed
on invertebrates, or species that feed on invertebrates and small fish prey.Apex predators typically had the highest
mercury concentrations. In most species, mercury concentration increased as fish size increased. Sampling
in Florida waters is continuing, and future research relating mercury levels to fish age, feeding ecology, and the
trophic structure of Florida’s marine and estuarine ecosystems will help us better understand concentrations of
this element in marine fishes. (64pp.
Submillimeter observing conditions on Cerro Chajnantor
Consistently superb observing conditions are crucial for achieving the scientific objectives of a ground based telescope. For observations at submillimeter wavelengths, choosing a site with very little atmospheric water vapor is paramount. In northern Chile, the high Andes near San Pedro de Atacama are among the highest and driest places on Earth. At the 5000 m Chajnantor plateau, long term measurements have demonstrated observing conditions are excellent for submillimeter astronomy. Even better conditions prevail on higher mountain peaks in the vicinity. For the CCAT, we have selected a candidate site at 5612 m near the summit of Cerro Chajnantor. Radiosonde measurements, meteorological data, and measurements of the 350 Consistently superb observing conditions are crucial for achieving the scientific objectives of a ground based telescope. An Enquiry into Using Supplementary Bioscience Resources in Health
The learning and teaching of bioscience subjects has been recognised to be problematic for well over 20-30 years. Various reasons have been suggested but it is evident that better support for learning at least is required. Various strategies have been tried and effective online support looks promising, especially as an aid to help those students who struggle with science and for whom English is not their first language. This project sought to introduce an online module designed to support student self-efficacy on the basics of science that are fundamental to gaining an understanding of more advanced bioscience processes. The module went ‘live’ in February 2013 as a voluntary adjunct to curriculum teaching. Though designed with students in mind the subsequent access has been disappointing and raises questions about the willingness of some students to voluntarily access extracurricular material. This might be a focus for further exploration
TEDI: the TripleSpec Exoplanet Discovery Instrument
The TEDI (TripleSpec - Exoplanet Discovery Instrument) will be the first
instrument fielded specifically for finding low-mass stellar companions. The
instrument is a near infra-red interferometric spectrometer used as a radial
velocimeter. TEDI joins Externally Dispersed Interferometery (EDI) with an
efficient, medium-resolution, near IR (0.9 - 2.4 micron) echelle spectrometer,
TripleSpec, at the Palomar 200" telescope. We describe the instrument and its

Improved walking function in laboratory does not guarantee increased community walking in stroke survivors: Potential role of gait biomechanics
Reduced daily stepping in stroke survivors may contribute to decreased functional capacity and increased mortality. We investigated the relationships between clinical and biomechanical walking measures that may contribute to changes in daily stepping activity following physical interventions provided to participants with subacute stroke. Following ≤40 rehabilitation sessions, 39 participants were categorized into three groups: responders/retainers increased daily stepping >500 steps/day post-training (POST) without decreases in stepping at 2-6 month follow-up (F/U); responders/non-retainers increased stepping at POST but declined >500 steps/day at F/U; and, non-responders did not change daily stepping from baseline testing (BSL). Gait kinematics and kinetics were evaluated during graded treadmill assessments at BSL and POST. Clinical measures of gait speed, timed walking distance, balance and balance confidence were measured at BSL, POST and F/U. Between-group comparisons and regression analyses were conducted to predict stepping activity from BSL and POST measurements. Baseline and changes in clinical measures of walking demonstrated selective associations with stepping, although kinematic measures appeared to better discriminate responders. Specific measures suggest greater paretic vs non-paretic kinematic changes in responders with training, although greater non-paretic changes predicted greater gains (i.e., smaller declines) in stepping in retainers at F/U. No kinetic variables were primary predictors of changes in stepping activity at POST or F/U. The combined findings indicate specific biomechanical assessments may help differentiate changes in daily stepping activity post-stroke
