    Wettability characteristics of carbon steel modified with CO2, Nd:YAG, Excimer and high power diode lasers

    Interaction of CO2, Nd:YAG, excimer and high power diode laser (HPDL) radiation with the surface of a common mild steel (EN8) was found to effect changes in the wettability characteristics of the steel, namely changes in the measured contact angle. These modifications are related to changes in the surface roughness, changes in the surface oxygen content and changes in the surface energy of the mild steel. The wettability characteristics of the selected mild steel could be controlled and/or modified by laser surface treatment. A correlation between the change of the wetting properties of the mild steel and the laser wavelength was found

    High-power diode laser (HPDL) surface treatment of a common engineering carbon steel(EN8) was found to effect significant changes to the wettability characteristics of the metal. These modifications have been investigated in terms of the changes in the surface roughness of the steel, the presence of any surface melting, the polar component of the steel surface energy and the relative surface oxygen content of the steel. The morphological and wetting characteristics of the mild steel and the enamel were determined using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis and wetting experiments by the sessile drop technique.     The study conducted here has taken four different conceptual variables where the correlation and effect has been observed and specifically the concept of mediation is applied to find the real effect of mediating variables. Manager Academic Resilience, Manager Background, and Manager Behavior is independent variable and Performance is dependent variable where the research problem observed as exploring the relationship and effect of manager behavior on performance as well the impact of academic resilience, and background. For this purpose three research questions prepared are Does academic resilience contribute to manager’s performance? What is the importance of background factors for a manger? How manager’s behavior is effecting performance. It has been a systematic approach to find the solution for research problem answering research questions keeping objectives in mind as to know the benefit of academic resilience for managers, to assess manager’s background factors shaping behavior, and to explore the contribution of manager’s behavior in performance. A sample of 120 managers taken for the study from Kurdistan where a structured survey questionnaire used having items related to all dimensions and demographical variables. Data analysis is performed using SPSS 24 with reliability analysis, one sample T-test and Correlations regression analysis statistical tests. Findings and conclusion is based on analysis which supports the concept and justifies all three hypotheses taken in the study where all three conceptual hypothesis is accepted justifying the concept

    The enamelling of concrete for improved performance characteristics by means of high power diode laser interaction

    The contemporary 120 W high power diode laser (HPDL) has been successfully used for the first time to fire an enamel glaze onto the ordinary Portland cement (OPC) surface of concrete. The enamel glazes were generated with laser power densities as low as 1 kW/cm2 and at speeds of up to 780 mm/min, yielding a possible maximum coverage rate of 0.34 m2/h. The enamel glazes were typically 750 m in thickness and displayed no discernible microcracks or porosities. Owing to the wettability characteristics of the OPC, it proved necessary to laser treat the OPC surface prior to firing the enamel. Mechanical testing of the HPDL fired enamel glazes revealed that the average rupture strength was 2.8 J, whilst the rupture strength of the untreated OPC surface was some 4.3 J. The average bond strength of the glaze was recorded as 2.4 MPa as opposed to 6.3 MPa for the untreated OPC. The HPDL fired enamel glazes exhibited exceptional wear and corrosion resistance, wearing by only 3.3 mg/cm2 after 8 h and showing no discernible morphological or microstructural changes when exposed to acid, alkali and detergent. In contrast, the untreated OPC surface was attacked almost immediately by the reagents used and was worn by 78 mg/cm2 after 8 h. In addition, the HPDL fired enamel glaze afforded the concrete bulk complete resistance to water absorption. The findings of life assessment testing revealed that the HPDL fired enamel glaze effected an increase in the wear life of the concrete by 4.5 to 52.7 times over an untreated OPC surface, depending on the corrosive environment

    Premarital screening is an initial examination of the bride and groom before marriage to prepare for a healthy and planned pregnancy. Premarital screening can be done at the Puskesmas. In premarital screening there are ten types of examinations namely examination of vital signs, examination of nutritional status (weight, height, upper arm circumference, signs of anemia), blood type examination, hemoglobin examination, pregnancy test, hepatitis b examination, and administration TT (Tetanus Toxoid) immunization. This study aims to examine the description of the types of premarital screening procedures at Puskesmas Kartasura. This study uses a questionnaire that contains premarital screening procedures, procedures performed on the bride and groom filled by respondents as a measurement tool. The sample in this study amounted to 65 people. The statistical analysis used to describe the type of premarital screening procedure for the bride and groom is univariate analysis. This type of analysis is used to examine one variable. The results of a study of 65 brides who performed premarital screening at the Kartasura Health Center found 34 brides (52.3%) performed 8-10 premarital screening procedures, 6 brides (9.2%) performed 6-7 premarital screening procedures, and 25 prospective brides (38.5%) performed less than 6 premarital screening procedures.     On the predominant mechanisms active during the high power diode laser modification of the wettability characteristics of an SiO2/Al2O3-based ceramic material

    The mechanisms responsible for modifications to the wettability characteristics of a SiO2/Al2O3-based ceramic material in terms of a test liquid set comprising of human blood, human blood plasma, glycerol and 4-octonol after high power diode laser (HPDL) treatment have been elucidated. Changes in the contact angle, , and hence the wettability characteristics of the SiO2/Al2O3-based ceramic were attributed primarily to: modifications to the surface roughness of the ceramic resulting from HPDL interaction which accordingly effected reductions in ; the increase in the surface O2 content of the ceramic after HPDL treatment; since an increase in surface O2 content intrinsically brings about a decrease in , and vice versa and the increase in the polar component of the surface energy, due to the HPDL induced surface melting and resolidification which consequently created a partially vitrified microstructure that was seen to augment the wetting action. However, the degree of influence exerted by each mechanism was found to differ markedly. Isolation of each of these mechanisms permitted the magnitude of their influence to be qualitatively determined. Surface energy, by way of microstructural changes, was found to be by far the most predominant element governing the wetting characteristics of the SiO2/Al2O3-based ceramic. To a much lesser extent, surface O2 content, by way of process gas, was also seen to influence to a changes in the wettability characteristics of the SiO2/Al2O3-based ceramic, whilst surface roughness was found to play a minor role in inducing changes in the wettability characteristics

    On the correlation between Nd:YAG laser-induced wettability characteristics modification and osteoblast cell bioactivity on a titanium alloy

    The factors responsible for modifications to the wettability characteristics of a titanium (Ti6Al4V) alloy bio-metal following Nd:YAG laser treatment and the effects thereof on the response of osteoblast cells were considered in this work. It was found that interaction of the Nd:YAG laser beam with the Ti6Al4V alloy resulted in the wettability characteristics of the bio-metal improving. Such improvements in the wettability characteristics of the Ti6Al4V alloy were found to be due to: an increase in the surface roughness; and increase in the surface oxygen content and an increase in the polar component of the surface energy. From the cell response tests it was determined that the osteoblast cell adhesion and proliferation on the Nd:YAG laser treated Ti6Al4V alloy samples was considerably greater than on the untreated samples. By isolating the effects of surface roughness it was possible to confirm or refute the existence of a correlation between wettability characteristics and osteoblast cell bioactivity for the Nd:YAG laser treated Ti6Al4V alloy. The findings indicated that the aspects of wettability characteristics: surface oxygen content and polar component of the surface energy play an important role in promoting cell proliferation, particularly when surface roughness was simultaneously increased. Thus it was possible to conclude that the wettability characteristics of the Nd:YAG laser treated Ti6Al4V alloy were correlated to osteoblast cell bioactivity

    Wetting and bonding characteristics of selected liquid-metals with a high power diode laser treated alumina bioceramic

    Changes in the wettability characteristics of an alumina bioceramic occasioned by high power diode laser (HPDL) surface treatment were apparent from the observed reduction in the contact angle. Such changes were due to the HPDL bringing about reductions the surface roughness, increases in the surface O2 content and increases in the polar component of the surface energy. Additionally, HPDL treatment of the alumina bioceramic surface was found to effect an improvement in the bonding characteristics by increasing the work of adhesion. An electronic approach was used to elucidate the bonding characteristics of the alumina bioceramic before and after HPDL treatment. It is postulated that HPDL induced changes to the alumina bioceramic produced a surface with a reduced bandgap energy which consequently increased the work of adhesion by increasing the electron transfer at the metal/oxide interface and thus the metal-oxide interactions. Furthermore, it is suggested that the increase in the work of adhesion of the alumina bioceramic after HPDL treatment was due to a correlation existing between the wettability and ionicity of the alumina bioceramic; for it is believed that the HPDL treated surface is less ionic in nature than the untreated surface and therefore exhibits better wettability characteristics

    High power diode laser (HPDL) surface glazing of the ordinary Portland cement (OPC) surface of concrete was found to effect significant changes in the wettability characteristics of the OPC. This behaviour was identified as being primarily due to: (i) the polar component of the OPC surface energy increasing after HPDL glazing from 3.46 to 15.56 mJm-2, (ii) the surface roughness of the OPC decreasing from an Ra value of 21.91 to 2.88 m after HPDL glazing and (iii) the relative surface O2 content of the OPC increasing by 4.5at% after HPDL glazing. HPDL glazing was consequently identified as occasioning a decrease in the enamel contact angle from an initial value of 1090 to 310, thus allowing the vitreous enamel to wet the OPC surface
