    Influence of a magnetic field on the viscosity of a dilute gas consisting of linear molecules.

    The viscomagnetic effect for two linear molecules, N2 and CO2, has been calculated in the dilute-gas limit directly from the most accurate ab initio intermolecular potential energy surfaces presently available. The calculations were performed by means of the classical trajectory method in the temperature range from 70 K to 3000 K for N2 and 100 K to 2000 K for CO2, and agreement with the available experimental data is exceptionally good. Above room temperature, where no experimental data are available, the calculations provide the first quantitative information on the magnitude and the behavior of the viscomagnetic effect for these gases. In the presence of a magnetic field, the viscosities of nitrogen and carbon dioxide decrease by at most 0.3% and 0.7%, respectively. The results demonstrate that the viscomagnetic effect is dominated by the contribution of the jj¯ polarization at all temperatures, which shows that the alignment of the rotational axes of the molecules in the presence of a magnetic field is primarily responsible for the viscomagnetic effect

    Adiabatic and non-adiabatic phonon dispersion in a Wannier function approach

    We develop a first-principles scheme to calculate adiabatic and non-adiabatic phonon frequencies in the full Brillouin zone. The method relies on the variational properties of a force-constants functional with respect to the first-order perturbation of the electronic charge density and on the localization of the deformation potential in the Wannier function basis. This allows for calculation of phonon dispersion curves free from convergence issues related to Brillouin zone sampling. In addition our approach justify the use of the static screened potential in the calculation of the phonon linewidth due to decay in electron-hole pairs. We apply the method to the calculation of the phonon dispersion and electron-phonon coupling in MgB2_2 and CaC6_6. In both compounds we demonstrate the occurrence of several Kohn anomalies, absent in previous calculations, that are manifest only after careful electron and phonon momentum integration. In MgB2_2, the presence of Kohn anomalies on the E2g_{2g} branches improves the agreement with measured phonon spectra and affects the position of the main peak in the Eliashberg function. In CaC6_6 we show that the non-adiabatic effects on in-plane carbon vibrations are not localized at zone center but are sizable throughout the full Brillouin zone. Our method opens new perspectives in large-scale first-principles calculations of dynamical properties and electron-phonon interaction.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figure

    Loss of molecules in magneto-electrostatic traps due to nonadiabatic transitions

    We analyze the dynamics of a paramagnetic, dipolar molecule in a generic "magneto-electrostatic'' trap where both magnetic and electric fields may be present. The potential energy that governs the dynamics of the molecules is found using a reduced molecular model that incorporates the main features of the system. We discuss the shape of the trapping potentials for different field geometries, as well as the possibility of nonadiabatic transitions to untrapped states, i.e., the analog of Majorana transitions in a quadrupole magnetic atomic trap. Maximizing the lifetime of molecules in a trap is of great concern in current experiments, and we assess the effect of nonadiabatic transitions on obtainable trap lifetimes.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figure

    Comparing the Weighted Density Approximation with the LDA and GGA for Ground State Properties of Ferroelectric Perovskites

    First-principles calculations within the weighted density approximation (WDA) were performed for ground state properties of ferroelectric perovskites PbTiO3_3, BaTiO3_3, SrTiO3_3, KNbO3_3 and KTaO3_3. We used the plane-wave pseudopotential method, a pair distribution function GG based on the uniform electron gas, and shell partitioning. Comparing with the local density approximation (LDA) and the general gradient approximation (GGA), we found that the WDA significantly improves the equilibrium volume of these materials in cubic symmetry over both the LDA and GGA; Ferroelectric instabilities calculated by the WDA agree with the LDA and GGA very well; At the experimental ferroelectric lattice, optimized atom positions by the WDA are in good agreement with measured data; However the WDA overestimates the strain of tetragonal PbTiO3_3 at experimental volume; The WDA overestimates the volume of fully relaxed structures, but the GGA results are even worse. Some calculations were also done with other models for GG. It is found that a GG with longer range behavior yields improved relaxed structures.     Spin foams with timelike surfaces

    Spin foams of 4d gravity were recently extended from complexes with purely spacelike surfaces to complexes that also contain timelike surfaces. In this article, we express the associated partition function in terms of vertex amplitudes and integrals over coherent states. The coherent states are characterized by unit 3--vectors which represent normals to surfaces and lie either in the 2--sphere or the 2d hyperboloids. In the case of timelike surfaces, a new type of coherent state is used and the associated completeness relation is derived.     The Unruh-deWitt Detector and the Vacuum in the General Boundary formalism

    We discuss how to formulate a condition for choosing the vacuum state of a quantum scalar field on a timelike hyperplane in the general boundary formulation (GBF) using the coupling to an Unruh-DeWitt detector. We explicitly study the response of an Unruh-DeWitt detector for evanescent modes which occur naturally in quantum field theory in the presence of the equivalent of a dielectric boundary. We find that the physically correct vacuum state has to depend on the physical situation outside of the boundaries of the spacetime region considered. Thus it cannot be determined by general principles pertaining only to a subset of spacetime.Comment: Version as published in CQ

    Hunter S. Thompson and gonzo journalism: A research guide.

    Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to identify and annotate resources related to Hunter S. Thompson and Gonzo Journalism. Design/methodology/approach – Numerous searches are performed in online library catalogs, online databases, and web search engines to identify monographs, journal articles, multimedia titles, and web sites relevant to the topic. Resources located in the searches are then reviewed and annotated by the author and selected for inclusion in the paper based on their relative quality. Findings – A great deal of popular work has been devoted to Thompson and Gonzo Journalism, but also a surprising amount of scholarly analysis. Most primary source material is now available in monographic form, and critical literature is fairly evenly distributed between journal articles and monographs. Search results for Thompson and Gonzo Journalism are often complicated by a number of factors, but these can be compensated for by using search limiters. Research limitations/implications – Because of the sheer volume of work, scholarly and popular, devoted to Thompson and Gonzo Journalism, it is not possible to provide a comprehensive evaluation of all of the materials on the topic. While every attempt is made to be inclusive, the goal of the guide was to include the best sources on the topic, and some resources are reviewed but not included because of quality issues. A number of un-annotated bibliographies are referenced that would be helpful in directing readers to additional resources not included here. Originality/value – Although there are bibliographies of Thompson\u27s work, none are annotated or prepared with academic researchers in mind. In addition, none of the bibliographies located in the course of researching the paper attempted to identify academic journal literature related to Thompson or Gonzo Journalism
