    RECONSTRUCTION ACCURACY FOR VISUAL CALIBRATION METHOD

    Motion analysis is a common technique in biomechanics and sport studies. Since Abdel-Aziz and Karara (1971), the direct linear transformation (DLT) is the most widely used method to analyse human movements. More recently, Drenk et al. (1999) proposed a modified DLT method, called DLT double-plane method (DLT DP), which involves two parallel control planes (rather than a whole 3D structure). With these two calibration methods, a set of coefficients is calculated. This set summarise indirectly the internal and external parameters of the camera. Kwon et al. (2002) and Elipot et al. (2008) have respectively shown that, in aerial and underwater conditions, the DLT DP method can reduce the reconstruction error

    An estimate of the k2k_{2} Love number of WASP-18Ab from its radial velocity measurements

    Context. Increasing our knowledge of the interior structure, composition and density distribution of exoplanets is crucial to make progress in the understanding of exoplanetary formation, migration and habitability. However, the directly measurable mass and radius values offer little constraint on interior structure, because the inverse problem is highly degenerate. Therefore there is a clear need for a third observable of exoplanet interiors. This third observable can be the k2k_2 fluid Love number which measures the central mass concentration of an exoplanet. Aims. The aims of this paper are (i) to develop a basic model to fit the long-term radial velocity and TTV variations caused by tidal interactions, (ii) to apply the model to the WASP-18Ab system, and (iii) to estimate the Love number of the planet. Methods. Archival radial velocity, transit and occultation timing data are collected and fitted via the model introduced here. Results. The best model fit to the archival radial velocity and timing data of WASP-18Ab was obtained with a Love number of the massive (10MJup\sim 10 M_\mathrm{Jup}) hot Jupiter WASP-18Ab: k2,Love=0.620.19+0.55k_{2,Love} = 0.62^{+0.55}_{-0.19}. This causes apsidal motion in the system, at a rate of 0.0087±0.0033/days31.3±11.8\sim0.0087\pm0.0033^\circ / \mathrm{days} \approxeq 31.3\pm11.8 arcseconds/day. When checking possible causes of periastron precession, other than the relativistic term or the non-spherical shape of the components, we found a companion star to the WASP-18 system, named WASP-18B which is a probable M6.5V dwarf with 0.1 M\sim 0.1~M_\odot at 3519 AU distance from the transit host star. We also find that small orbital eccentricities may be real, rather than an apparent effect caused by the non spherical stellar shape.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic

    Cranial sensory neuron development in the absence of brain-derived neurotrophic factor in BDNF/Bax double null mice

    AbstractTo investigate the role of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in differentiation of cranial sensory neurons in vivo, we analyzed development of nodose (NG), petrosal (PG), and vestibular (VG) ganglion cells in genetically engineered mice carrying null mutations in the genes encoding BDNF and the proapoptotic Bcl-2 homolog Bax. In bax −/− mutants, ganglion cell numbers were increased significantly compared to wild-type animals, indicating that naturally occurring cell death in these ganglia is regulated by Bax signaling. Analysis of bdnf −/− bax −/− mutants revealed that, although the Bax null mutation completely rescued cell loss in the absence of BDNF, it did not rescue the lethality of the BDNF null phenotype. Moreover, despite rescue of BDNF-dependent neurons by the bax null mutation, sensory target innervation was abnormal in double null mutants. Vagal sensory innervation to baroreceptor regions of the cardiac outflow tract was completely absent, and the density of vestibular sensory innervation to the cristae organs was markedly decreased, compared to wild-type controls. Moreover, vestibular afferents failed to selectively innervate their hair cell targets within the cristae organs in the double mutants. These innervation failures occurred despite successful navigation of sensory fibers to the peripheral field, demonstrating that BDNF is required locally for afferent ingrowth into target tissues. In addition, the bax null mutation failed to rescue expression of the dopaminergic phenotype in a subset of NG and PG neurons. These data demonstrate that BDNF signaling is required not only to support survival of cranial sensory neurons, but also to regulate local growth of afferent fibers into target tissues and, in some cells, transmitter phenotypic expression is required

    A randomized, blinded, controlled trial investigating the gastrointestinal health effects of drinking water quality.

    A double-blinded, randomized, controlled trial was carried out in in Melbourne, Australia, to determine the contribution of drinking water to gastroenteritis. Melbourne is one of the few major cities in the world that draws drinking water from a protected forest catchment with minimal water treatment (chlorination only). Six hundred families were randomly allocated to receive either real or sham water treatment units (WTUs) installed in their kitchen. Real units were designed to remove viruses, bacteria, and protozoa. Study participants completed a weekly health diary reporting gastrointestinal symptoms during the 68-week observation period. There were 2,669 cases of highly credible gastroenteritis (HCG) during the study (0.80 cases/person/year). The ratio of HCG episode rates for the real WTU group compared to the sham WTU group was 0.99 (95% confidence interval, 0.85-1.15, p = 0.85). We collected 795 fecal specimens from participants with gastroenteritis, and pathogens were not more significantly common in the sham WTU group. We found no evidence of waterborne disease in Melbourne. The application of this methodology to other water supplies will provide a better understanding of the relationship between human health and water quality

    Keeping kids in school: modelling school-based testing and quarantine strategies during the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia

    BackgroundIn 2021, the Australian Government Department of Health commissioned a consortium of modelling groups to generate evidence assisting the transition from a goal of no community COVID-19 transmission to ‘living with COVID-19’, with adverse health and social consequences limited by vaccination and other measures. Due to the extended school closures over 2020–21, maximizing face-to-face teaching was a major objective during this transition. The consortium was tasked with informing school surveillance and contact management strategies to minimize infections and support this goal.MethodsOutcomes considered were infections and days of face-to-face teaching lost in the 45 days following an outbreak within an otherwise COVID-naïve school setting. A stochastic agent-based model of COVID-19 transmission was used to evaluate a ‘test-to-stay’ strategy using daily rapid antigen tests (RATs) for close contacts of a case for 7 days compared with home quarantine; and an asymptomatic surveillance strategy involving twice-weekly screening of all students and/or teachers using RATs.FindingsTest-to-stay had similar effectiveness for reducing school infections as extended home quarantine, without the associated days of face-to-face teaching lost. Asymptomatic screening was beneficial in reducing both infections and days of face-to-face teaching lost and was most beneficial when community prevalence was high.InterpretationUse of RATs in school settings for surveillance and contact management can help to maximize face-to-face teaching and minimize outbreaks. This evidence supported the implementation of surveillance testing in schools in several Australian jurisdictions from January 2022

    Socioeconomic consequences of the COVID‐19 pandemic for people who use drugs

    The COVID-19 pandemic triggered widespread socioeconomic hardship, disproportionately impacting disadvantaged populations. People who use illicit drugs are more likely to experience unemployment, homelessness, criminal justice involvement and poorer health outcomes than the general community, yet little is known about the socioeconomic impacts of the pandemic on their lives. To address this gap in the literature, we conducted in-depth interviews with 76 participants from two cohort studies of people who use illicit drugs (people who inject drugs and/or use methamphetamine) in Victoria, Australia. Findings support claims that pandemic-related Social Security supplementary payments and initiatives to reduce homelessness, although not systemically transforming people's lives, produced temporary relief from chronic socioeconomic hardship. Results also indicate how temporary interruptions to drug supply chains inflated illicit drug prices and produced adverse consequences such as financial and emotional stress, which was exacerbated by drug withdrawal symptoms for many participants. Furthermore, increased community demand for emergency food and housing support during the pandemic appeared to reduce participants' access to these services. Our findings about the unintended consequences of pandemic responses on the socioeconomic lives of a group of people who use illicit drugs provide insights into and opportunities for policy reform to redress their entrenched disadvantage

    The impact of injecting networks on hepatitis C transmission and treatment in people who inject drugs

    With the development of new highly efficacious direct acting antiviral treatments (DAAs) for hepatitis C (HCV), the concept of treatment as prevention is gaining credence. To date the majority of mathematical models assume perfect mixing with injectors having equal contact with all other injectors. This paper explores how using a networks based approach to treat people who inject drugs (PWID) with DAAs affects HCV prevalence. Method: Using observational data we parameterized an Exponential Random Graph Model containing 524 nodes. We simulated transmission of HCV through this network using a discrete time, stochastic transmission model. The effect of five treatment strategies on the prevalence of HCV was investigated; two of these strategies were 1) treat randomly selected nodes and 2) “treat your friends” where an individual is chosen at random for treatment and all their infected neighbours are treated. Results: As treatment coverage increases, HCV prevalence at 10 years reduces for both the high efficacy and low efficacy treatment. Within each set of parameters, the “treat your friends” strategy performed better than the random strategy being most marked for higher efficacy treatment. For example over 10 years of treating 25 per 1000 PWID, the prevalence drops from 50% to 40% for the random strategy, and to 33% for the “treat your friends” strategy (6.5% difference, 95% CI 5.1 – 8.1%). Discussion: “Treat your friends” is a feasible means of utilising network strategies to improve treatment efficiency. In an era of highly efficacious and highly tolerable treatment such an approach will benefit not just the individual but the community more broadly by reducing the prevalence of HCV amongst PWID
