Book review Debates in Design and Technology Education (2nd Edition), Hardy, A. (ed) (2022)

    Get PDF
This second edition of Debates in Design and Technology Education is situated within the somewhat precarious position that design and technology currently (still) holds in schools in the UK, and we are reminded of this context at a number of points through the book. At the same time, as stated by Alison Hardy in the introduction, it is also an acknowledgement of the new generation of research emerging within the subject, and as such is presented in part as a renewal or reframing. Much has happened, politically, socially, environmentally and technologically, since the first edition of Debates was published in 2013, and this second edition is a clear reflection of the related developments, though also at times the lack of development, in design and technology education. This volume presents debates around the subject in three distinct sections: political and international debates, the nature and perceptions of the subject, and classroom teaching, which provide the framing for the review that follows

Engaging object agency: new ways of design learning and being for young people in the museum

    Get PDF
This research investigates object intra-actions with young people in the design museum. Agency in relation to learning is under-researched in museum studies, and this is especially lacking in research that focuses on learning during secondary school visits to design museums. Further exploring agency through religious-political dimensions, another under-researched area is Christian and Christian-colonial influences in museology broadly, and in museum learning in particular. These influences are pertinent to learner and object agency due to their historical proscription of certain values and structures to knowledge and experience of the design object and its representations in the museum, and as such they co-constitute the entanglement of this research. The research aims to disrupt the status quo by using a design and new materialist methodological approach to make sense of and, where possible, make visible intra-actions between objects within this entanglement. This paper is intended as a discussion piece which examines the historically imbued nature of design learning for young people in school visits to the museum, sets out the framework-methodology and frames a number of key questions to be explored further through the conference presentation. Agential realism underpins the theoretical-methodological framework which also supports my position as learner-researcher, and this positioning is further enhanced by my professional experience in museums, schools and the university. The research identifies alternative pedagogies for both schools and museums that are co-located between learners and museums as entangled producers of knowledge. This is a radical re-imagining of design pedagogies in museums and classrooms that contributes to the multi-stakeholder dialogue on decolonising methodologies within design education

Pro Se Divorce Clinic: Tailored To The Times

Morehead State University partners with Legal Aid of the Bluegrass to provide the region with the Pro Se Divorce Clinic. Through the clinic, supervised students assist indigent clients with filling out the necessary paperwork to represent themselves and obtain a divorce. Without the help of the clinic, most clients would not be able to afford the cost to receive a divorce. Previous to COVID-19, the clinic was held once a month during the school year, serving an annual average of 70+ clients total (that number would be double if counting spouses). The supervised student coordinator manages all of the clinic\u27s logistics from client referral to final decree. Since the clinic is in-person, COVID-19 had halted them for the 2020-2021 year. In coordination with Legal Aid of the Bluegrass staff and the faculty mentor, the student coordinator worked to identify challenges and propose protocols for in person and virtual clinics during a pandemic. The student coordinator has reviewed cases for the past five years to identify any challenges to clinic efficiency (including analyzing common causes for delays). Through identifying those challenges, the student coordinator developed procedures for increasing clinic efficiency, including enhanced client communication. Challenges and considerations include the health and safety of clients and volunteers, the need for notarized signatures, the requirement that the Petitioner submit a deposition under oath, technological limitations for indigent clients, improving clinic efficiency and reducing delays, and more. The student coordinator created a proposed plan outlining options for both a virtual clinic and a clinic utilizing the new Zoom Room located at Legal Aid of the Bluegrass with a pilot Zoom Room clinic scheduled for April. These plans provide options for running the clinic in a safe manner while supporting the needs of the communities it serves. Finally, the student coordinator has created a survey to gauge clinic productivity and client satisfaction.https://scholarworks.moreheadstate.edu/celebration_posters_2021/1045/thumbnail.jp

The Imaging and Cognition Genetics Conference 2011, ICG 2011: A Meeting of Minds

    Get PDF
In June 2011, 70 researchers from the disciplines of cognitive science, genetics, psychology, psychiatry, neurobiology, and computer science gathered in Os, Norway, for the first Imaging and Cognition Genetics meeting. The aim of the conference was to discuss progress, enhance collaboration, and maximize the sharing of resources within this new field. In this Perspective, we summarize the major themes that emerged from ICG 2011. The first is the importance of defining cognitive and imaging phenotypes and endophenotypes suitable for genetic analysis. These can come from differential psychology, cognitive science, structural MRI, tractography, and functional imaging. The second theme is the emergence of new methods for the analysis of complex traits. These include advanced computational and statistical techniques for analyzing complex datasets, and new ways of interpreting data from genome-wide association studies, such as jointly evaluating the contribution of SNPs in specific genes and pathways rather than considering single SNPs in isolation. The final theme is the importance of establishing functional correlates of newly identified genetic variants

Assessing the Requirements for the Transformable Craft, A Framework for Analyzing Game Changing Capabilities

This study assesses the impact of functional requirements for the Transformable Craft project, sponsored by the Office of Naval Research. Although focused on the ā€œgame changingā€ nature of these requirements, this study provides a framework for analysis of generic logistics connectors, sea basing alternatives, and force structures by means of operational scenarios and simple simulation and analysis tools. This study demonstrates the means by which these tools can assist military decision makers in understanding complex and high level issues
