    Effects of an Adolescent Asthma Education Intervention on Knowledge, Intention, Behavior, Self-Efficacy and Self-Consciousness

    In this study, we evaluated the effects of an asthma education intervention, guided by social cognitive theory, on knowledge, intention, behavior, self-efficacy, and self-consciousness. The sample consisted of 87 asthmatic adolescents in six middle and/or high schools in California. A non-equivalent comparison group design, with delayed intervention in the comparison group, was utilized. We implemented a modified version of the American Lung Association’s Kickin Asthma curriculum. Self-report questionnaires assessing the key study variables were administered at baseline, at immediate postintervention, and five weeks after the intervention. There were no statistically significant differences at post-test, controlling for pre-test values, for any of the study variables between the intervention (n = 51) and comparison groups (n = 35). After collapsing across groups, however, there were statistically significant improvements following the intervention for knowledge, intention, selected behavior variables, and self-efficacy. The evaluation of this theory-based asthma education intervention demonstrates the positive impact this curriculum can have on a sample of asthmatic adolescents

    Association of Covered California and Healthcare Access and Utilization among Latino Population

    Background and Purpose: The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act resulted in establishment of Covered California (Covered CA), a marketplace providing federally subsidized health insurance in California. This study explored whether obtaining Covered CA coverage improves healthcare access and utilization among Latinos, and whether acculturation plays a role in utilization of healthcare. Methods: 270 Latino adults in San Diego community completed a self-report survey. Results: Those with Covered CA were significantly more likely to have a main provider (p<.0005), to select doctor’s office as location for services (p<.05), and significantly less likely (p<.0005) to report cost as an obstacle to care compared to uninsured participants. The more acculturated group was more likely to report receiving care at a doctor’s office (p<.05). Those who were less acculturated were more likely to report cost as an obstacle to care (p<.05). However, no significant associations were found between acculturation or insurance type and utilization of healthcare. Conclusion: Although health insurance and higher levels of acculturation do improve access, the study did not find their significant association with utilization of provider visits. Our results suggest that healthcare providers might want to consider additional factors to improve utilization of services instead of mainly emphasizing insurance

    Factors associated with the decision to obtain an HIV test among Chinese/Chinese American community college women in Northern California

    HIV testing and counseling is the cornerstone of a comprehensive approach to HIV prevention and education. This article examines reasons for and barriers to obtaining an HIV test among 230 Chinese/Chinese American college students. Using Health Belief Model constructs, a cross-sectional study was administered at four California community college campuses. The self-report survey results indicated that 30% of respondents have obtained HIV testing. The most common reasons for testing were “just to find out” (73%), “having had unprotected sexual intercourse” (63%), and “having had sex with a new partner” (57%). Among those who were never tested, low levels of perceived susceptibility (66%) and lack of knowledge on testing sites (36%) were the most common barriers. Multiple unconditional logistic regression analyses revealed age, ethnic identity, lack of condom use during last intercourse, lower perceived barriers, and higher self-efficacy as significant predictors of HIV testing history. Emphasizing these factors in HIV education campaigns will likely increase testing rates within this population

    An AIDS-Risk Assessment of Students Attending Christian High Schools in the United States of America: A Practical Application of the Theory of Planned Behavior

    During the school year of 1994-1995 students (n = 1611) attending Seventh-day Adventist high schools in the United States of America completed questionnaires designed to assess their HIV/AIDS-related knowledge and behaviors. AIDS-related behavioral intentions, attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived control were also assessed according to the Theory of Planned Behavior (Ajzen, 1989). The rates of the sexual and drug-use behaviors measured in this population are lower than for students who attend public high schools. Increased risk for participating in sexual intercourse, the key AIDS-risk behavior in youth, was associated with the students’ substance use and also by their parents’ use of substances. Measurements designed in accord with the Theory of Planned Behavior revealed that students most relied on spiritual strength and encouragement from teachers to manage their control over premarital sexual intercourse. © 1998, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.     Association between Acculturation and Binge Drinking among Asian-Americans: Results from the California Health Interview Survey

    Objective. Evaluate the association between acculturation and binge drinking among six Asian-American subgroups. Methods. A cross-sectional analysis of public access adult portion of 2007, 2009, and 2011/2012 California Health Interview Survey data was conducted. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were utilized with any binge drinking in the past year as the outcome variable and language spoken at home and time in USA as proxy measures of acculturation. Results. A total of 1,631 Asian-Americans (N=665,195) were identified as binge drinkers. Binge drinking was positively associated with being first generation South Asian (OR=3.05, 95% CI=1.55, 5.98) and monolingual (English only) Vietnamese (OR=3.00; 95% CI=1.58, 5.70), especially among females. Other factors associated with increased binge drinking were being female (Chinese only), not being current married (South Asian only), and being an ever smoker (all subgroups except South Asians). Conclusion. First generation South Asians and linguistically acculturated Vietnamese, especially females, are at an increased risk of binge drinking. Future studies and preventive measures should address the cultural basis of such health risk behaviors among Asian-American adults
