Contract-program evaluation: impact of the DRG classification system on hospitals' outputs
A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Management from the NOVA – School of Business and EconomicsThe present work project aims at evaluating the impact of contract-program
implementation in 2003 and of incentives created in 2007 on hospital output, under the
DRG inpatient classification system. A sample of five Portuguese acute public district
hospitals was chosen as sample, between 2002 and 2007. Results of hypothesis testing
shows positive significant effects on decreasing average lengths of stay, despite
significant average age and case-mix increases verified after 2002. Increasing rates of
elective outpatient surgeries were also proved significant. Effects of the introduction of
25 new medical outpatient DRG prices in 2007 were proven significant, even if a clear
trend was not observable in terms of increases on outpatient discharges, exception made
for DRG 410 (chemotherapy). Regression analysis, aiming at detecting upcoding effects
in 109 DRG pairs, showed sensitiveness of fraction of the most complicated DRG on
each pair to positive changes in DRG prices, for 3 out of 5 hospitals. However, average
negative price changes verified for the considered timeframe cancelled expected
upcoding effects
Several carbon supported metal catalysts were prepared and tested in the butyric acid
oxidation reaction at 200ºC and 6.9 bar of oxygen partial pressure. The Pt/C and the Ir/C
catalysts have shown a great efficiency in the organic pollutant concentration removal. Some
deactivation in the Ir/C catalyst was observed when tested in consecutive butyric acid
oxidation runs, while the Pt/C catalyst proved to have a strong deactivation resistance. The
deactivation of the Ir/C catalyst was attributed to a metallic surface over-oxidation by oxygen.
The catalysts developed were applied to the oxidation of an olive mill effluent, the complete removal of the organic load being attained with some systems
toxicidade
Photochemical deposition: a simple and effective approach to catalyst preparation for cinnamaldehyde hydrogenation
Photochemical deposition of noble metals over metal oxide supports has the advantage of spreading very effectively the metal throughout the support, thus leading to high dispersions.
Materials with catalytic properties can be prepared in this way and used in many applications including selective hydrogenation of unsaturated organic substrates containing oxygenated functional groups, like steroids or α,β-unsaturated aldehydes, which are used in the industrial
preparation of fine chemicals.
Titania supported Pt and Ir catalysts were prepared by photodeposition. They were used in the cinnamaldehyde selective hydrogenation to test their activity and selectivity. The photodeposition method was able to produce materials with an outstanding performance for selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde, leading to a selectivity as high as 64% towards
cinnamyl alcohol at 79% conversion under mild operating conditions
Catalytic wet air oxidation of olive mill wastewater
The objective of this work was to study the suitability of catalytic wet air oxidation (CWAO) for the treatment of olive mill wastewater (OMW). Accordingly, experiments were performed in a high pressure reactor at 100ºC and 200ºC under an oxygen partial pressure of 6.9 bar, using carbon supported platinum (1wt.% Pt) and iridium (5 wt.% Ir) catalysts prepared by incipient wetness impregnation. Both catalytic systems showed a very high activity in the total organic
carbon (TOC) removal of the effluent, an increase in TOC removal relatively to non-CWAO being observed. At 200ºC, complete TOC and colour removal was obtained with the Pt/C catalyst after 8 h of reaction. At 100ºC, the results indicate that a certain fraction of compounds in the effluent (low molecular weight recalcitrant carboxylic acids)could not be removed even after prolonged reaction time. A kinetic model was developed taking into account catalytic and noncatalytic reaction, formation of refractory compounds and catalyst deactivation. A very good agreement between the model results and the CWAO experimental data at 200ºC was found. The results obtained in this work indicate that Pt/C
is a promising catalyst for the CWAO of OMW
