Completeness for a First-order Abstract Separation Logic
Existing work on theorem proving for the assertion language of separation
logic (SL) either focuses on abstract semantics which are not readily available
in most applications of program verification, or on concrete models for which
completeness is not possible. An important element in concrete SL is the
points-to predicate which denotes a singleton heap. SL with the points-to
predicate has been shown to be non-recursively enumerable. In this paper, we
develop a first-order SL, called FOASL, with an abstracted version of the
points-to predicate. We prove that FOASL is sound and complete with respect to
an abstract semantics, of which the standard SL semantics is an instance. We
also show that some reasoning principles involving the points-to predicate can
be approximated as FOASL theories, thus allowing our logic to be used for
reasoning about concrete program verification problems. We give some example
theories that are sound with respect to different variants of separation logics
from the literature, including those that are incompatible with Reynolds's
semantics. In the experiment we demonstrate our FOASL based theorem prover
which is able to handle a large fragment of separation logic with heap

General-elimination stability
General-elimination harmony articulates Gentzen's idea that the elimination-rules are justified if they infer from an assertion no more than can already be inferred from the grounds for making it. Dummett described the rules as not only harmonious but stable if the E-rules allow one to infer no more and no less than the I-rules justify. Pfenning and Davies call the rules locally complete if the E-rules are strong enough to allow one to infer the original judgement. A method is given of generating harmonious general-elimination rules from a collection of I-rules. We show that the general-elimination rules satisfy Pfenning and Davies' test for local completeness, but question whether that is enough to show that they are stable. Alternative conditions for stability are considered, including equivalence between the introduction- and elimination-meanings of a connective, and recovery of the grounds for assertion, finally generalizing the notion of local completeness to capture Dummett's notion of stability satisfactorily. We show that the general-elimination rules meet the last of these conditions, and so are indeed not only harmonious but also stable.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Cellular localization, accumulation and trafficking of double-walled carbon nanotubes in human prostate cancer cells
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are at present being considered as potential nanovectors with the ability to deliver therapeutic cargoes into living cells. Previous studies established the ability of CNTs to enter cells and their therapeutic utility, but an appreciation of global intracellular trafficking associated with their cellular distribution has yet to be described. Despite the many aspects of the uptake mechanism of CNTs being studied, only a few studies have investigated internalization and fate of CNTs inside cells in detail. In the present study, intracellular localization and trafficking of RNA-wrapped, oxidized double-walled CNTs (oxDWNT–RNA) is presented. Fixed cells, previously exposed to oxDWNT–RNA, were subjected to immunocytochemical analysis using antibodies specific to proteins implicated in endocytosis; moreover cell compartment markers and pharmacological inhibitory conditions were also employed in this study. Our results revealed that an endocytic pathway is involved in the internalization of oxDWNT–RNA. The nanotubes were found in clathrin-coated vesicles, after which they appear to be sorted in early endosomes, followed by vesicular maturation, become located in lysosomes. Furthermore, we observed co-localization of oxDWNT–RNA with the small GTP-binding protein (Rab 11), involved in their recycling back to the plasma membrane via endosomes from the trans-golgi network
Top quark physics in hadron collisions
The top quark is the heaviest elementary particle observed to date. Its large
mass makes the top quark an ideal laboratory to test predictions of
perturbation theory concerning heavy quark production at hadron colliders. The
top quark is also a powerful probe for new phenomena beyond the Standard Model
of particle physics. In addition, the top quark mass is a crucial parameter for
scrutinizing the Standard Model in electroweak precision tests and for
predicting the mass of the yet unobserved Higgs boson. Ten years after the
discovery of the top quark at the Fermilab Tevatron top quark physics has
entered an era where detailed measurements of top quark properties are
undertaken. In this review article an introduction to the phenomenology of top
quark production in hadron collisions is given, the lessons learned in Tevatron
Run I are summarized, and first Run II results are discussed. A brief outlook
to the possibilities of top quark research a the Large Hadron Collider,

The method of measuring bearing (azimuth) of a moving surface (underwater) object in the passive sonar is described. This method is considered to be a modification of signals phase comparing method. It is based on the measurement of the delay time between signals received at different signal reception point. A distinctive feature of this method is the use for signal processing method of coherent accumulation of the spectral components of the received signal, developed by the authors. This method provides increase signal/noise ratio in the reception channels, therefore decrease errors of measuring bearing in the passive sonar.Описывается метод измерения пеленга (азимута) движущегося надводного (подводного) объекта в пассивном гидролокаторе. Рассматриваемый метод является модификацией метода фазового мгновенного сравнения сигналов. В основе метода лежит измерение времени задержки сигналов, принятых в разнесенных приемных пунктах. Отличительной особенностью метода является использование для обработки способа когерентного накопления спектральных составляющих принятого сигнала, разработанного авторами. Использование этого способа обеспечивает повышение отношения сигнал/шум в каналах приема и приводит к снижению ошибок измерения пеленга в пассивном гидролокаторе
Study of ATLAS sensitivity to FCNC top decays
The ATLAS experiment sensitivity to top quark Flavour Changing Neutral
Current (FCNC) decays was studied at LHC using ttbar events. While one of the
top quarks is expected to follow the dominant Standard Model decay t->bW, the
other decays through a FCNC channel, i.e. t-> Z u(c), t-> gamma u(c) or t-> g
u(c). Different types of analyses, applied to each FCNC decay mode, were
compared. The FCNC branching ratio sensitivity (assuming a 5sigma signal
significance) and 95% confidence level limits on the branching ratios (in the
hypothesis of signal absence) were obtained
Resummation of heavy jet mass and comparison to LEP data
The heavy jet mass distribution in e+e- collisions is computed to
next-to-next-to-next-to leading logarithmic (NNNLL) and next-to-next-to leading
fixed order accuracy (NNLO). The singular terms predicted from the resummed
distribution are confirmed by the fixed order distributions allowing a precise
extraction of the unknown soft function coefficients. A number of quantitative
and qualitative comparisons of heavy jet mass and the related thrust
distribution are made. From fitting to ALEPH data, a value of alpha_s is
extracted, alpha_s(m_Z)=0.1220 +/- 0.0031, which is larger than, but not in
conflict with, the corresponding value for thrust. A weighted average of the
two produces alpha_s(m_Z) = 0.1193 +/- 0.0027, consistent with the world
average. A study of the non-perturbative corrections shows that the flat
direction observed for thrust between alpha_s and a simple non-perturbative
shape parameter is not lifted in combining with heavy jet mass. The Monte Carlo
treatment of hadronization gives qualitatively different results for thrust and
heavy jet mass, and we conclude that it cannot be trusted to add power
corrections to the event shape distributions at this accuracy. Whether a more
sophisticated effective field theory approach to power corrections can
reconcile the thrust and heavy jet mass distributions remains an open question.Comment: 33 pages, 14 figures. v2 added effect of lower numerical cutoff with

Colour reconnections in Herwig++
We describe the implementation details of the colour reconnection model in
the event generator Herwig++. We study the impact on final-state observables in
detail and confirm the model idea from colour preconfinement on the basis of
studies within the cluster hadronization model. Moreover, we show that the
description of minimum bias and underlying event data at the LHC is improved

Squark Mixing in Electron-Positron Reactions
Squark mixing plays a large role in the phenomenology of the minimal
supersymmetric standard model, determining the mass of the lightest Higgs boson
and the electroweak interactions of the squarks themselves. We examine how
mixing may be investigated in high energy reactions, both at LEP-II
and the proposed linear collider. In particular, off-diagonal production of one
lighter and one heavier squark allows one to measure the squark mixing angle,
and would allow one to test the mass relations for the light Higgs boson. In
some cases off-diagonal production may provide the best prospects to discover
supersymmetry. In the context of the light bottom squark scenario, we show that
existing data from LEP-II should show definitive evidence for the heavier
