The Ship has Gone Down With the Captain : A study of the framing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) Chairman Geoff Clark in The Australian

This study looks at the frames used in the Australian newspaper\u27s coverage of Indigenous leader Geoff Clark, from his re-election as chairman of the Aboriginal and Tones Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) at the end of 2002 until the agency\u27s demise in March 2004, and finds two divergent ways of reporting Indigenous issues. In summary, the Geoff Clark case study highlights the ideological divide between proponents of the so-called tights-based agenda in Indigenous affairs and those that favour the responsibilities-based agenda. When established in 1990, ATSIC was viewed as a significant step towards Indigenous self-determination. With official federal government policy shifting away from self-determination to a focus on a non-symbolic issues (Ruddock, 2003), ATSIC\u27s future was always in doubt. This thesis shows the Australian, as a leading proponent of the federal government\u27s responsibilities-based policy agenda, has framed the perceived turmoil in organisation\u27s Indigenous leadership and the perceived ineffectiveness of ATSIC as a failure of Indigenous self-determination

As population and consumption levels continue to increase against a fixed supply of renewable fresh water, creative new ways of sustaining this resource must be explored. Particularly in the Pacific Northwest, climatic variability and increasing water demands are creating a situation that is forcing water resource managers to critically examine the sustainability of current water usage. The drought-like summer conditions of 2002 forced the City of Bellingham Public Works into distributing the majority of all legally available freshwater from the Lake Whatcom reservoir, yet there are no financial-based incentives encouraging Bellingham residents to decrease their water consumption. The price of water remains low due to flat-rate single-family residential fees subsidizing the metered cost of business usage. However, the cost of water is rising as freshwater ecosystems become stressed under increasing populations

Memory Keepers & Dual Faith: Surviving Pagan and Pre-Christian Elements in Slavic Culture

My studies here at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, though broad, have thus far centered mainly on the ancient cultures of the Mediterranean and Near East. Recently, I have taken a class in Slavic Folklore and because of it have realized one large difference between the cultures of the Mediterranean and Near East and the cultures of the Slavic tribes - namely their matriarchal structure. Though a female divinity is represented in the religions of the Mediterranean and the Near East, their dominant deity is male and is portrayed as a father figure who not only rules the heavens but also rules the home. This does not seem to be so in Slavic cultures where many of the tribal religions focus on the mother as creator and her role as keeper of the home, the hearth, and the traditions - both ritual and familial.As a Christian, a matriarchal structure in religion is a foreign concept and so I will be focusing on the role of women in both cultures. I will begin by comparing their deities and hierarchical structures West of the Danube, that of the Mediterranean and Near East, to those East of the Danube, that of the Slavic tribes. Then to show the changes made to those religions over time I will explain how that hierarchy was impacted under Christian influences.Using the focus of women\u27s roles reflected in the heavenly hierarchy and in their faith traditions will allow me to better explain and understand why those ancient peoples thought and acted in the manners that they did. I believe a study of the role of women and their ease of access to religion, their role as officiate, and how that role shaped their worldview - and that of their children - will provide a more complete understanding of the peoples of the ancient world

Bien que, lors d’un sondage, la majorité des entreprises du commerce de détail ainsi que des consommateurs aient déclaré être opposés à un changement de la loi fixant l’heure de fermeture des magasins (LFFM) de 1956, le législateur a décidé une libéralisation. Cette dernière est entrée en vigueur le 1er novembre 1996 et permet maintenant l’ouverture des magasins jusqu’à 20 heures. Pourtant, les effets sur le plan économique global qui avaient été attendus de cette extension des horaires d’ouverture ne bénéficient pas dans la même mesure à toutes les entreprises du commerce de détail. Disruptive Innovation or Design? Posthumanist Perspectives on Prometheus in Discourses of Literature, Labour and Agency

Als Schöpferfigur wird Prometheus in Überlegungen über Literatur angeführt; als Bild für den autonomen Menschen, der sich seine Welt durch Arbeit selbst schafft, illustriert die Figur Debatten über die Arbeit des Menschen. Seit Ihab Hassans Text Prometheus as Performer: Toward a Posthumanist Culture (1977) ist die Figur des Prometheus eng mit dem Konzept des Posthumanismus verbunden (Franssen 2014). Wichtig sind hier besonders Überlegungen zur „disruptiven Innovation“ (Schumpeter), Innovation beruhe immer auf Zerstörung. Demgegenüber stehen Latours Überlegungen von Design als Werk eines „vorsichtigen Prometheus“ (Latour 2008). Sowohl „Literatur“ als auch „Arbeit“ beschreibt ein Verhältnis des Menschen zur Welt, dessen Konzeption dem historischen Wandel unterworfen ist. Beide Verhältnisse werden diskursiv geprägt. Der Beitrag geht der Frage nach, wie diese Verhältnisse in literarischen Texten mit Referenz auf die Prometheus-Figur ausgearbeitet werden. Der Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit Texten, in denen die Prometheus-Figur für eine Reflexion über Literatur selbst und über Vorstellungen von Arbeit und Produktion herangezogen wird: entweder als disruptive Innovation oder als vorsichtiges Design.As a creator figure, Prometheus is invoked in reflections on literature; as an image for autonomous human agency creating the human world through work, the figure illustrates debates about human labour. Since Ihab Hassan’s text Prometheus as Performer: Toward a Posthumanist Culture (1977), the figure of Prometheus has been closely associated with the concept of posthumanism (Franssen 2014). Especially important here are considerations of “disruptive innovation” (Schumpeter); innovation is always based on destruction. In contrast, Latour writes about design as the work of a “cautious Prometheus” (Latour 2008). Both “literature” and “work” describe a relationship of human agency and the world, the conception of which is subject to historical change. Both relations are discursively shaped. This paper explores how these relations are elaborated in literary texts with reference to the Prometheus figure. The paper looks at texts in which the Prometheus figure is drawn upon for a reflection on literature itself and on notions of labour and agency: either as disruptive innovation or as careful design

Autobiographien als Medien lebensgeschichtlicher Erinnerungen: zentrale Lebensthemen und autobiographische Schreibformen in Frauenautobiographien um 1900

Ziel der Betrachtung ist die Frage nach dem wechselseitigen Zusammenhang von Gegenstand und Form in Bezug auf die Analyse von Lebensproblemen und Selbstidentifikationen von Autobiographinnen. In diesem Sinne werden die methodische und methodologische Vorgehensweise bei der Analyse von Frauenautobiographien von 1890 bis 1914 und deren Ergebnisse vorgestellt. Neben der Auswahl der Untersuchungsgruppe wird die Analyse der Autobiographien nach dem Verfahren der 'Grounded Theory' vorgestellt. Als Resultat ergaben sich für die Autobiographien fünf Lebensthemen: Familie, Beruf, Politik, Dichtkunst und Musik. Die Hauptrepräsentanten der jeweiligen Lebensthemen sowie die dazugehörigen Vergleichsfälle wurden ausführlich sequenzanalytisch interpretiert. Hierzu wurde auf Interpretationsverfahren narrativer Interviews (Fritz Schütze) zurückgegriffen. Bei der Vorstellung einiger Ergebnisse der Autobiographie-Analyse wird deutlich, dass die Autobiographinnen ein weites Spektrum autobiographischer Schreibformen nutzen. Sie teilen ihre lebensgeschichtliche Entscheidung für ein zentrales Lebensthema häufig in szenisch gestalteten Schlüsselszenen mit, die zeigen, dass es fast immer eine Konfliktsituation war, die dem Lebensthema zugrunde lag. Die Analyse der Schlüsselszenen und der Schilderungen zentraler biographischer Entscheidungssituationen verweisen bei allen Frauen auf ein Aufeinanderprallen von Ich und der Welt. Dieser Prozess führte bei den Frauen im Gegensatz zu ihren traditionellen Rollen zu einer neuen Selbstauffassung und zu einem autobiographischen Selbstbewusstsein. (ICH
