    Influence of flow confinement on the drag force on a static cylinder

    The influence of confinement on the drag force FF on a static cylinder in a viscous flow inside a rectangular slit of aperture h0h_0 has been investigated from experimental measurements and numerical simulations. At low enough Reynolds numbers, FF varies linearly with the mean velocity and the viscosity, allowing for the precise determination of drag coefficients λ∣∣\lambda_{||} and λ⊥\lambda_{\bot} corresponding respectively to a mean flow parallel and perpendicular to the cylinder length LL. In the parallel configuration, the variation of λ∣∣\lambda_{||} with the normalized diameter β=d/h0\beta = d/h_0 of the cylinder is close to that for a 2D flow invariant in the direction of the cylinder axis and does not diverge when β=1\beta = 1. The variation of λ∣∣\lambda_{||} with the distance from the midplane of the model reflects the parabolic Poiseuille profile between the plates for β≪1\beta \ll 1 while it remains almost constant for β∼1\beta \sim 1. In the perpendicular configuration, the value of λ⊥\lambda_{\bot} is close to that corresponding to a 2D system only if β≪1\beta \ll 1 and/or if the clearance between the ends of the cylinder and the side walls is very small: in that latter case, λ⊥\lambda_{\bot} diverges as β→1\beta \to 1 due to the blockage of the flow. In other cases, the side flow between the ends of the cylinder and the side walls plays an important part to reduce λ⊥\lambda_{\bot}: a full 3D description of the flow is needed to account for these effects

    Thermo-mechanical behavior of surface acoustic waves in ordered arrays of nanodisks studied by near infrared pump-probe diffraction experiments

    The ultrafast thermal and mechanical dynamics of a two-dimensional lattice of metallic nano-disks has been studied by near infrared pump-probe diffraction measurements, over a temporal range spanning from 100 fs to several nanoseconds. The experiments demonstrate that, in these systems, a two-dimensional surface acoustic wave (2DSAW), with a wavevector given by the reciprocal periodicity of the array, can be excited by ~120 fs Ti:sapphire laser pulses. In order to clarify the interaction between the nanodisks and the substrate, numerical calculations of the elastic eigenmodes and simulations of the thermodynamics of the system are developed through finite-element analysis. At this light, we unambiguously show that the observed 2DSAW velocity shift originates from the mechanical interaction between the 2DSAWs and the nano-disks, while the correlated 2DSAW damping is due to the energy radiation into the substrate.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figure

    Nucleon mass and pion loops: Renormalization

    Using Dyson--Schwinger equations, the nucleon propagator is analyzed nonperturbatively in a field--theoretical model for the pion--nucleon interaction. Infinities are circumvented by using pion--nucleon form factors which define the physical scale. It is shown that the correct, finite, on--shell nucleon renormalization is important for the value of the mass--shift and the propagator. For physically acceptable forms of the pion--nucleon form factor the rainbow approximation together with renormalization is inconsistent. Going beyond the rainbow approximation, the full pion--nucleon vertex is modelled by its bare part plus a one--loop correction including an effective Δ\Delta. It is found that a consistent value for the nucleon mass--shift can be obtained as a consequence of a subtle interplay between wave function and vertex renormalization. Furthermore, the bare and renormalized pion--nucleon coupling constant are approximately equal, consistent with results from the Cloudy Bag Model.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figure

    Universal school meals and associations with student participation, attendance, academic performance, diet quality, food security, and Body Mass Index: A systematic review

    The school environment plays an important role in children\u27s diets and overall health, and policies for universal free school meals have the potential to contribute to positive child health outcomes. This systematic review evaluates studies examining the association between universal free school meals and students\u27 school meal participation rates, diets, attendance, academic performance, and Body Mass Index (BMI), as well as school finances. The search was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). A search for studies published in economically developed countries published through December 2020 was performed in PubMed, Education Resources Information Center (ERIC), Thomson Reuters\u27 Web of Science, and Academic Search Ultimate, followed by examining the references in the resultant literature. A total of 47 studies were identified and the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) was applied to assess bias. Nearly all studies examining universal free school meals found positive associations with school meal participation. Most studies examining universal free school meals that included free lunch found positive associations with diet quality, food security, and academic performance; however, the findings of studies examining only universal free breakfast were mixed. Research findings were similarly mixed when examining attendance as an outcome. Concerns about adverse outcomes on student BMI were not supported by the literature; in fact, several studies detected a potentially protective effect of universal free school meals on BMI. Research examining the impact of universal free meals on school finances was limited, but suggest that lower-income school districts in the U.S. may have positive financial outcomes from participation in universal free school meal provisions. Additionally, providing free meals to students may be associated with improved household incomes, particularly among lower-income families with children. Further research is needed to examine the financial implications of universal free meals for both school districts and families. Overall, universal free school meals may have multiple benefits for students and countries should consider universal free school meal provisions with strong nutrition guidelines.
