An optimized analytical method for the simultaneous detection of iodoform, iodoacetic acid, and other trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids in drinking water

An optimized method is presented using liquid-liquid extraction and derivatization for the extraction of iodoacetic acid (IAA) and other haloacetic acids (HAA9) and direct extraction of iodoform (IF) and other trihalomethanes (THM4) from drinking water, followed by detection by gas chromatography with electron capture detection (GC-ECD). A Doehlert experimental design was performed to determine the optimum conditions for the five most significant factors in the derivatization step: namely, the volume and concentration of acidic methanol (optimized values  = 15%, 1 mL), the volume and concentration of Na2SO4 solution (129 g/L, 8.5 mL), and the volume of saturated NaHCO3 solution (1 mL). Also, derivatization time and temperature were optimized by a two-variable Doehlert design, resulting in the following optimized parameters: an extraction time of 11 minutes for IF and THM4 and 14 minutes for IAA and HAA9; mass of anhydrous Na2SO4 of 4 g for IF and THM4 and 16 g for IAA and HAA9; derivatization time of 160 min and temperature at 40°C. Under optimal conditions, the optimized procedure achieves excellent linearity (R2 ranges 0.9990–0.9998), low detection limits (0.0008–0.2 µg/L), low quantification limits (0.008–0.4 µg/L), and good recovery (86.6%–106.3%). Intra- and inter-day precision were less than 8.9% and 8.8%, respectively. The method was validated by applying it to the analysis of raw, flocculated, settled, and finished waters collected from a water treatment plant in China

RGS9, a GTPase Accelerator for Phototransduction

    Get PDF
AbstractThe rod outer segment phototransduction GAP (GTPase-accelerating protein) has been identified as RGS9, a member of the RGS family of Gα GAPs. RGS9 mRNA expression is specific for photoreceptor cells, and RGS9 protein colocalizes with other phototransduction components to photoreceptor outer segment membranes. The RGS domain of RGS9 accelerates GTP hydrolysis by the visual G protein transducin (Gαt), and this acceleration is enhanced by the γ subunit of the phototransduction effector cGMP phosphodiesterase (PDEγ). These unique properties of RGS9 match those of the rod outer segment GAP and implicate it as a key element in the recovery phase of visual transduction

Bosonic Reduction of Susy Generalized Harry Dym Equation

In this paper we construct the two component supersymmetric generalized Harry Dym equation which is integrable and study various properties of this model in the bosonic limit. In particular, in the bosonic limit we obtain a new integrable system which, under a hodograph transformation, reduces to a coupled three component system. We show how the Hamiltonian structure transforms under a hodograph transformation and study the properties of the model under a further reduction to a two component system. We find a third Hamiltonian structure for this system (which has been shown earlier to be a bi-Hamiltonian system) making this a genuinely tri-Hamiltonian system. The connection of this system to the modified dispersive water wave equation is clarified. We also study various properties in the dispersionless limit of our model.Comment: 21 page

Facial expression recognition using histogram variances faces

In human's expression recognition, the representation of expression features is essential for the recognition accuracy. In this work we propose a novel approach for extracting expression dynamic features from facial expression videos. Rather than utilising statistical models e.g. Hidden Markov Model (HMM), our approach integrates expression dynamic features into a static image, the Histogram Variances Face (HVF), by fusing histogram variances among the frames in a video. The HVFs can be automatically obtained from videos with different frame rates and immune to illumination interference. In our experiments, for the videos picturing the same facial expression, e.g., surprise, happy and sadness etc., their corresponding HVFs are similar, even though the performers and frame rates are different. Therefore the static facial recognition approaches can be utilised for the dynamic expression recognition. We have applied this approach on the well-known Cohn-Kanade AU-Coded Facial Expression database then classified HVFs using PCA and Support Vector Machine (SVMs), and found the accuracy of HVFs classification is very encouraging. © 2009 IEEE

Background: Radix Astragali was one of the main compositions of ‘Modified Danggui Buxue Decoction’  used for treatment of various kidney diseases. Astragaloside IV was the active composition of Radix Astragali. Astragaloside IV liposomes were used for the treatment of adriamycin-induced nephropathy (AN) rats. The aim of the study was to study the effect of astragaloside IV liposomes on AN rats, and to test through  regulating the expression of nephrin, integrins and integrin-linked kinase (ILK) in renal  tissues. Methods: The rats were given a single tail intravenous injection of adriamycin (6 mg/kg) within 1 week,  and then divided into four groups including normal, model, benazepril and astragaloside IV liposomes group. They were all orally administered dosage of benazepril and astragaloside IV liposomes once daily for 8 weeks. Results: Astragaloside IV liposomes significantly reduced the proteinuria of AN rats at 28, 42 and 56 days. astragaloside IV liposomes could increase the mRNA and protein expression of nephrin, integrin α3, down-regulate the expression of ILK to alleviate the podocyte damage and restore glomerular selective filtration function. Conclusions: Astragaloside IV liposomes could enhance renal function and protect podocyte to  ameliorate the adriamycin-induced nephritic syndrome.Key words:Astragaloside IV, Liposomes, Ardiamycin-induce nephropathy, Podocyt

    Deep Regionlets for Object Detection

In this paper, we propose a novel object detection framework named "Deep Regionlets" by establishing a bridge between deep neural networks and conventional detection schema for accurate generic object detection. Motivated by the abilities of regionlets for modeling object deformation and multiple aspect ratios, we incorporate regionlets into an end-to-end trainable deep learning framework. The deep regionlets framework consists of a region selection network and a deep regionlet learning module. Specifically, given a detection bounding box proposal, the region selection network provides guidance on where to select regions to learn the features from. The regionlet learning module focuses on local feature selection and transformation to alleviate local variations. To this end, we first realize non-rectangular region selection within the detection framework to accommodate variations in object appearance. Moreover, we design a "gating network" within the regionlet leaning module to enable soft regionlet selection and pooling. The Deep Regionlets framework is trained end-to-end without additional efforts. We perform ablation studies and conduct extensive experiments on the PASCAL VOC and Microsoft COCO datasets. The proposed framework outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms, such as RetinaNet and Mask R-CNN, even without additional segmentation labels.Comment: Accepted to ECCV 201
