Objectives. To assess the beneficial and adverse effects of Xiaoyaosan for depression. Search Strategy. Electronic databases were searched until December 2009. Inclusion Criteria. We included randomized clinical trials testing Xiaoyaosan against placebo, antidepressants, or combined with antidepressants against antidepressants alone. Data Extraction and Analyses. Study selection, data extraction, quality assessment, and data analyses were conducted according to the Cochrane standards. Results. 26 randomized trials (involving 1837 patients) were included and the methodological quality was evaluated as generally low. The pooled results showed that Xiaoyaosan combined with antidepressants was more effective in comprehensive effect, the score of HAMD and the score of SDS compared with antidepressants alone. Xiaoyaosan was superior to antidepressants for the score of HAMD. However, Xiaoyaosan was not different from placebo for the score of SDS. There was no adverse effects reported in the trials from Xiaoyaosan. Conclusions. Xiaoyaosan appears to be effective on improving symptoms in patients with depression. However, due to poor methodological quality in the majority of included trials, the potential benefit from Xiaoyaosan need to be confirmed in rigorous trials and the design and reporting of trials should follow international standards

Establishing the carrier scattering phase diagram for ZrNiSn-based half-Heusler thermoelectric materials

Chemical doping is one of the most important strategies for tuning electrical properties of semiconductors, particularly thermoelectric materials. Generally, the main role of chemical doping lies in optimizing the carrier concentration, but there can potentially be other important effects. Here, we show that chemical doping plays multiple roles for both electron and phonon transport properties in half-Heusler thermoelectric materials. With ZrNiSn-based half-Heusler materials as an example, we use high-quality single and polycrystalline crystals, various probes, including electrical transport measurements, inelastic neutron scattering measurement, and first-principles calculations, to investigate the underlying electron-phonon interaction. We find that chemical doping brings strong screening effects to ionized impurities, grain boundary, and polar optical phonon scattering, but has negligible influence on lattice thermal conductivity. Furthermore, it is possible to establish a carrier scattering phase diagram, which can be used to select reasonable strategies for optimization of the thermoelectric performance.Comment: 21 pages, 5 figure

Wenxin-Keli Regulates the Calcium/Calmodulin-Dependent Protein Kinase II Signal Transduction Pathway and Inhibits Cardiac Arrhythmia in Rats with Myocardial Infarction

Wenxin-Keli (WXKL) is a Chinese herbal compound reported to be of benefit in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmia, cardiac inflammation, and heart failure. Amiodarone is a noncompetitive inhibitor of the α- and β-adrenergic receptors and prevents calcium influx in the slow-response cells of the sinoatrial and atrioventricular nodes. Overexpression of Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) in transgenic mice results in heart failure and arrhythmias. We hypothesised that administration of WXKL and amiodarone can reduce the incidence of arrhythmias by regulating CaMKII signal transduction. A total of 100 healthy Sprague Dawley rats were used in the study. The rats were randomly divided into four groups (a sham group, a myocardial infarction (MI) group, a WXKL-treated group, and an amiodarone-treated group). A myocardial infarction model was established in these rats by ligating the left anterior descending coronary artery for 4 weeks. Western blotting was used to assess CaMKII, p-CaMKII (Thr-286), PLB, p-PLB (Thr-17), RYR2, and FK binding protein 12.6 (FKBP12.6) levels. The Ca2+ content in the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) and the calcium transient amplitude were studied by confocal imaging using the fluorescent indicator Fura-4. In conclusion, WXKL may inhibit heart failure and cardiac arrhythmias by regulating the CaMKII signal transduction pathway similar to amiodarone

A carbon-disk microelectrode was used to investigate the surface concentration profile of etchant Br-2, which was electrogenerated on the Pt working electrode. The steady state reducing currents of Br-2 at different distances away from the Pt electode was measured. The concentration profile was estimated from the current-distance variation curves as a function of different sampling times. Experimentally determined concentration profiles are in good agreement with those estimated from the microetching results. The microelectrode technique has offered a good method to choose suitable etching solution for chemical micromachining

Recent Progress towards Novel EV71 Anti-Therapeutics and Vaccines

Enterovirus 71 (EV71) is a group of viruses that belongs to the Picornaviridae family, which also includes viruses such as polioviruses. EV71, together with coxsackieviruses, is widely known for its association with Hand Foot Mouth Disease (HFMD), which generally affects children age five and below. Besides HFMD, EV71 can also trigger more severe and life-threatening neurological conditions such as encephalitis. Considering the lack of a vaccine and antiviral drug against EV71, together with the increasing spread of these viruses, the development of such drugs and vaccines becomes the top priority in protecting our younger generations. This article, hence, reviews some of the recent progress in the formulations of anti-therapeutics and vaccine generation for EV71, covering (i) inactivated vaccines; (ii) baculovirus-expressed vaccines against EV71; (iii) human intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) treatment; and (iv) the use of monoclonal antibody therapy as a prevention and treatment for EV71 infections

OBJECTIVE: To determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) distribution of antibacterial drugs and the susceptibility of non-tuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) isolates to provide a reference basis for the clinical selection of an effective starting regimen. METHODS: The common clinical isolates of NTM in the respiratory tract, which met the standards of the American Thoracic Society for NTM lung disease, were collected. The MICs of 81 isolates were determined using the microbroth dilution method (Thermo Fisher Scientific, USA), as recommended by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute, USA. RESULTS: Included were 43 Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) strains, 24 M. abscessus complex (MAB) strains, and 14 M. kansasii strains. The sensitivity rates of MAC to clarithromycin and amikacin were 81.4% and 79.1%, respectively, while the sensitivity rates to linezolid and moxifloxacin were only 20.9% and 9.3%; the MIC of rifabutin was the lowest (MIC50% was just 2 mu g/mL). After incubation for 3-5 days, the sensitivity rate of MAB to clarithromycin was 87.5%; this decreased to 50% after 14 days' incubation. Most of them were susceptible to amikacin (91.6%), and most were resistant to moxifloxacin (95.8%), ciprofloxacin (95.8%), imipenem (95.8%), amoxicillin/clavulanate (95.8%), tobramycin (79.1%), doxycycline (95.8%) and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (95.8%). intermediate (83.3%) and resistant (16.7%) to cefoxitin. The susceptibility to linezolid was only 33.3%. The sensitivity and resistance breakpoints of tigecycline were set to <= 0.5 and >= 8 mu g/mL, respectively, and the sensitivity and resistance rates were 50% and 0%, respectively. M. kansasii was susceptible to clarithromycin, amikacin, linezolid, moxifloxacin, rifampicin and rifabutin (100%). DISCUSSION: In Wenzhou, clarithromycin, amikacin and rifabutin have good antibacterial activity against MAC, while linezolid and moxifloxacin have high resistance. Amikacin and tigecycline have strong antibacterial activity against MAB, while most other antibacterial drugs are resistant to varying degrees. Most antibacterial drugs are susceptible to M. kansasii and have good antibacterial activity. Conclusion: The identification of NTM species and the detection of their MICs have certain guiding values for the treatment of NTM lung disease. KEY MESSAGE: The three most common respiratory non-tuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) isolates with clinical significance in the Wenzhou area were tested for drug susceptibility. The broth microdilution method was used to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration distribution of antibacterial drugs and the susceptibility of NTM isolates to provide a reference basis for the clinical selection of an effective starting regimen

A peptic ulcer (PU) is a digestive disorder most commonly found in clinical practice. An oriental herbal formula, Xiao Chai Hu Tang (XCHT), has been used to treat PU for an extended period in China. The effectiveness and safety of XCHT in treating peptic ulcers was evaluated using a systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Studies were systematically retrieved from CNKI, Embase, Medline, PubMed, SinoMed, VIP, Wanfang, and Web of Science. The following information was extracted from the relevant RCTs: the clinical efficacy rate, recurrence rate, clinical efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine, and the adverse effects. 13 RCTs, including 1334 patients, were included in this review. The meta-analysis showed that treatment with XCHT was superior to conventional pharmacotherapy (CPT) in improving the clinical efficacy rate (RR: 1.20, 95% confidence intervals (CIs): 1.08–1.34, P=0.0007), poor appetite (RR: 0.30, 95% CI: 0.15–0.61, P=0.0009), abdominal distension (RR: 0.61, 95% CI: 0.39–0.96, P=0.03), vomiting (RR: 0.33, 95% CI: 0.19–0.55, P<0.0001), and stomach pain (RR: 0.36, 95% CI: 0.19–0.68, P=0.002) and reducing adverse events (RR: 0.23, 95% CI: 0.07–0.69, P=0.009). XCHT considerably increased the total clinical efficacy rate (RR: 1.22, 95% CI: 1.15–1.30, P<0.00001) as both monotherapy and adjunctive therapy. The recurrence rate (RR = 0.29; 95% CI: 0.16–0.52, P<0.0001) was remarkably decreased in the XCHT plus CPT group. The meta-analysis did not show a significant beneficial effect of XCHT compared with CPT in reducing the recurrence rate (RR = 0.45; 95% CI: 0.07–3.10, P=0.42) and acid reflux (RR: 0.76, 95% CI: 0.47–1.23, P=0.26). Our findings show that XCHT can treat peptic ulcers as part of an alternative medicine approach
