    Key pedagogic thinkers: R. J. Harris

    R. J. (Roland) Harris (1919-1969), English teacher and poet, was deputy head of the flagship London comprehensive school Woodberry Down in the 1960s. He was perhaps best known in the educational field for the findings of his PhD thesis (1962) which was an experimental enquiry into the teaching of grammar in the early secondary school years. He also worked for the Schools Council, where he was instrumental in the raising of the school leaving age to 16; and for the last two years of his life he taught psycholinguistics at Brunel University. Many of his child-centred ideas on education were honed in association with his wife, Martha Harris, who was head of the Child Psychotherapy training at the Tavistock Clinic; his group work and administrative experience lay behind her restructuring of the training in the 60s.     Comment on the Coupling of Zero Sound to the J=1J=1^- Modes of 3^3He-B

    Features in the zero sound attenuation near the pair-breaking edge in superfluid 3^3He-B have been observed in large magnetic fields. Schopohl and Tewordt [{\sl J. Low Temp. Phys.} {\bf 57}, 601 (1984)] claim that the J=1,M=±1J=1^-, M=\pm 1 order-parameter collective modes couple to zero sound as a result of the distortion of the equilibrium order parameter by a magnetic field; they identify the new features with these modes. However, we show that, when the effect of gap distortion on the collective modes is properly taken into account, the collective mode equations of Schopohl and Tewordt yield no direct coupling of zero sound to the J=1J=1^- modes. Thus, the identification of the absorption features reported by Ling, Saunders and Dobbs [{\sl Phys. Rev. Lett.} {\bf 59}, 461 (1987)] near the pair-breaking edge with the J=1J=1^- modes is not clearly established.Comment: 6 pages (Tex with jnl.tex

    Specific Heat of Disordered 3^{3}He

    Porous aerogel is a source of elastic scattering in superfluid 3He and modifies the properties of the superfluid, suppressing the transition temperature and order parameter. The specific heat jumps for the B-phase of superfluid 3He in aerogel have been measured as a function of pressure and interpreted using the homogeneous and inhomogeneous isotropic scattering models.     Roy J. Britten, 1919–2012: Our early years at Caltech

    Roy Britten died in Costa Mesa, California on January 21, 2012, of pancreatic cancer at age 92. His work in the 1960s, in which he used renaturation kinetics to provide a quantitative image of the single-copy and repetitive sequence content of animal genomes, was of gigantic intellectual import, and it essentially built the ground floor of the edifice that we call genomics today. He was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 1972. At the beginning of the 1970s, Roy and I teamed up as scientific partners, and we relocated to Caltech. At Caltech, we worked together for over one-quarter of a century, and most of the following work consists of a very brief retrospective on the eventful first decade of our Caltech partnership. Later, in the 1990s, Roy returned to focus on his old interests in evolutionary processes that affect genomic sequence content. He continued to carry out computational analyses on the roles of mobile elements and other processes that ceaselessly remodel genomes, particularly primate genomes, almost until his death; his last paper, “Transposable element insertions have strongly affected human evolution,” was published in PNAS in November of 2010 when he was 91 years old

    Jesse Martin Glasco, or J. M. Glasco, lived in Gilmer in Upshur County, Texas, between the mid- 1840s and 1886. During most of those years he served as Upshur County surveyor and deputy surveyor, as well as deputy county clerk, postmaster, and tax assessor, and he also represented Upshur County in the 11th Texas legislature. Between 1859-1861 and 1867-1873, he was a meteorological observer for Upshur County for the Smithsonian Institution, and also collected Native American pottery for the Smithsonian’s collections from the Gilmer area

    The letters of John Alexander Kinnear consist of 7 postcards and 92 letters which were written by Kinnear to his family living near Lexington Virginia. The letters range in dates from November of 1916 (before Kinnear joined the service) to May of 1919 (after he arrived home from Europe). The letters are mainly addressed to his mother, Mrs. J. J. L.     ON NEWTON-RAPHSON METHOD

    Recent versions of the well-known Newton-Raphson method for solving algebraic equations are presented. First of these is the method given by J. H. He in 2003. He reduces the problem to solving a second degree polynomial equation. However He’s method is not applicable when this equation has complex roots. In 2008, D. Wei, J. Wu and M. Mei eliminated this deficiency, obtaining a third order polynomial equation, which has always a real root. First of the authors of present paper obtained higher order polynomial equations, which for orders 2 and 3 are reduced to equations given by He and respectively by Wei-Wu-Mei, with much improved form.
