Investigation of Mobility Limiting Mechanisms in Undoped Si/SiGe Heterostructures
We perform detailed magnetotransport studies on two-dimensional electron
gases (2DEGs) formed in undoped Si/SiGe heterostructures in order to identify
the electron mobility limiting mechanisms in this increasingly important
materials system. By analyzing data from 26 wafers with different
heterostructure growth profiles we observe a strong correlation between the
background oxygen concentration in the Si quantum well and the maximum
mobility. The highest quality wafer supports a 2DEG with a mobility of 160,000
cm^2/Vs at a density 2.17 x 10^11/cm^2 and exhibits a metal-to-insulator
transition at a critical density 0.46 x 10^11/cm^2. We extract a valley
splitting of approximately 150 microeV at a magnetic field of 1.8 T. These
results provide evidence that undoped Si/SiGe heterostructures are suitable for

Scalable gate architecture for densely packed semiconductor spin qubits
We demonstrate a 12 quantum dot device fabricated on an undoped Si/SiGe
heterostructure as a proof-of-concept for a scalable, linear gate architecture
for semiconductor quantum dots. The device consists of 9 quantum dots in a
linear array and 3 single quantum dot charge sensors. We show reproducible
single quantum dot charging and orbital energies, with standard deviations less
than 20% relative to the mean across the 9 dot array. The single quantum dot
charge sensors have a charge sensitivity of 8.2 x 10^{-4} e/root(Hz) and allow
the investigation of real-time charge dynamics. As a demonstration of the
versatility of this device, we use single-shot readout to measure a spin
relaxation time T1 = 170 ms at a magnetic field B = 1 T. By reconfiguring the
device, we form two capacitively coupled double quantum dots and extract a
mutual charging energy of 200 microeV, which indicates that 50 GHz two-qubit
gate operation speeds are feasible
A Reconfigurable Gate Architecture for Si/SiGe Quantum Dots
We demonstrate a reconfigurable quantum dot gate architecture that
incorporates two interchangeable transport channels. One channel is used to
form quantum dots and the other is used for charge sensing. The quantum dot
transport channel can support either a single or a double quantum dot. We
demonstrate few-electron occupation in a single quantum dot and extract
charging energies as large as 6.6 meV. Magnetospectroscopy is used to measure
valley splittings in the range of 35-70 microeV. By energizing two additional
gates we form a few-electron double quantum dot and demonstrate tunable tunnel
coupling at the (1,0) to (0,1) interdot charge transition.Comment: Related papers at http://pettagroup.princeton.ed

Contrasting arbuscular mycorrhizal communities colonizing different host plants show a similar response to a soil phosphorus concentration gradient
High soil phosphorus (P) concentration is frequently shown to reduce root colonization by arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, but the influence of P on the diversity of colonizing AM fungi is uncertain.
We used terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) of 18S rDNA and cloning to assess diversity of AM fungi colonizing maize (Zea mays), soybean (Glycene max) and field violet (Viola arvensis) at three time points in one season along a P gradient of 10–280 mg l−1 in the field.
Percentage AM colonization changed between sampling time points but was not reduced by high soil P except in maize. There was no significant difference in AM diversity between sampling time points. Diversity was reduced at concentrations of P > 25 mg l−1, particularly in maize and soybean. Both cloning and T-RFLP indicated differences between AM communities in the different host species. Host species was more important than soil P in determining the AM community, except at the highest P concentration.
Our results show that the impact of soil P on the diversity of AM fungi colonizing plants was broadly similar, despite the fact that different plants contained different communities. However, subtle differences in the response of the AM community in each host were evident
Dancing to the Partisan Beat: A First Analysis of Political Communication on TikTok
TikTok is a video-sharing social networking service, whose popularity is
increasing rapidly. It was the world's second-most downloaded app in 2019.
Although the platform is known for having users posting videos of themselves
dancing, lip-syncing, or showcasing other talents, user-videos expressing
political views have seen a recent spurt. This study aims to perform a primary
evaluation of political communication on TikTok. We collect a set of US
partisan Republican and Democratic videos to investigate how users communicated
with each other about political issues. With the help of computer vision,
natural language processing, and statistical tools, we illustrate that
political communication on TikTok is much more interactive in comparison to
other social media platforms, with users combining multiple information
channels to spread their messages. We show that political communication takes
place in the form of communication trees since users generate branches of
responses to existing content. In terms of user demographics, we find that
users belonging to both the US parties are young and behave similarly on the
platform. However, Republican users generated more political content and their
videos received more responses; on the other hand, Democratic users engaged

No elliptic islands for the universal area-preserving map
A renormalization approach has been used in \cite{EKW1} and \cite{EKW2} to
prove the existence of a \textit{universal area-preserving map}, a map with
hyperbolic orbits of all binary periods. The existence of a horseshoe, with
positive Hausdorff dimension, in its domain was demonstrated in \cite{GJ1}. In
this paper the coexistence problem is studied, and a computer-aided proof is
given that no elliptic islands with period less than 20 exist in the domain. It
is also shown that less than 1.5% of the measure of the domain consists of
elliptic islands. This is proven by showing that the measure of initial
conditions that escape to infinity is at least 98.5% of the measure of the
domain, and we conjecture that the escaping set has full measure. This is
highly unexpected, since generically it is believed that for conservative
systems hyperbolicity and ellipticity coexist
Review: Towards the agroecological management of ruminants, pigs and poultry through the development of sustainable breeding programmes. II. Breeding strategies
Agroecology uses ecological processes and local resources rather than chemical inputs to develop productive and resilient livestock and crop production systems. In this context, breeding innovations are necessary to obtain animals that are both productive and adapted to a broad range of local contexts and diversity of systems. Breeding strategies to promote agroecological systems are similar for different animal species. However, current practices differ regarding the breeding of ruminants, pigs and poultry. Ruminant breeding is still an open system where farmers continue to choose their own breeds and strategies. Conversely, pig and poultry breeding is more or less the exclusive domain of international breeding companies which supply farmers with hybrid animals. Innovations in breeding strategies must therefore be adapted to the different species. In developed countries, reorienting current breeding programmes seems to be more effective than developing programmes dedicated to agroecological systems that will struggle to be really effective because of the small size of the populations currently concerned by such systems. Particular attention needs to be paid to determining the respective usefulness of cross-breeding v. straight breeding strategies of well-adapted local breeds. While cross-breeding may offer some immediate benefits in terms of improving certain traits that enable the animals to adapt well to local environmental conditions, it may be difficult to sustain these benefits in the longer term and could also induce an important loss of genetic diversity if the initial pure-bred populations are no longer produced. As well as supporting the value of within-breed diversity, we must preserve between-breed diversity in order to maintain numerous options for adaptation to a variety of production environments and contexts. This may involve specific public policies to maintain and characterize local breeds (in terms of both phenotypes and genotypes), which could be used more effectively if they benefited from the scientific and technical resources currently available for more common breeds. Last but not least, public policies need to enable improved information concerning the genetic resources and breeding tools available for the agroecological management of livestock production systems, and facilitate its assimilation by farmers and farm technicians
Polarization properties of broad absorption line QSOs : new statistical clues
We report the results of statistical tests performed on a sample of 139 broad
absorption line (BAL) QSOs with good quality optical spectra and/or optical
polarization data. Correlations between optical indices and the polarization
degree p_0 are systematically searched for. In order to identify the most
important correlations, we perform a principal component analysis with a sample
of 30 BAL QSOs and eight quantities (including p_0). Most of the variance in
the data is contained in two principal components (PC): PC1 is mainly dominated
by the correlation between the balnicity index BI and the strength of the feii
emission, and may be driven by the accretion rate of matter onto the central
compact object. The variance in PC2 is essentially due to the anti-correlation
between p_0 and the detachment index DI. PC2 may be related to the orientation
of the BAL QSOs with respect to the line of sight. We also consider a
spectropolarimetric sample of 21 BAL QSOs for which we define four indices
describing the polarization properties of the absorption and emission lines. We
find a possible anti-correlation between the detachment index and a quantity SI
which measures the ratio of the depths of the civ absorption in the polarized
flux and in the total flux. This correlation indicates that in BAL QSOs with P
cygni profiles, the BAL troughs in the polarized flux are nearly as deep as in
the total flux while, in BAL QSOs with detached absorptions, the BAL troughs in
the polarized flux are much weaker than in the total flux. We show that our
main results may be explained in the framework of a 'two-component' wind model.
In this model, the broad absorption occurs in a dense equatorial wind emerging
from the accretion disk, while scattering and polarization mainly take place in
