The Computational Power of Optimization in Online Learning
We consider the fundamental problem of prediction with expert advice where
the experts are "optimizable": there is a black-box optimization oracle that
can be used to compute, in constant time, the leading expert in retrospect at
any point in time. In this setting, we give a novel online algorithm that
attains vanishing regret with respect to experts in total
computation time. We also give a lower bound showing
that this running time cannot be improved (up to log factors) in the oracle
model, thereby exhibiting a quadratic speedup as compared to the standard,
oracle-free setting where the required time for vanishing regret is
. These results demonstrate an exponential gap between
the power of optimization in online learning and its power in statistical
learning: in the latter, an optimization oracle---i.e., an efficient empirical
risk minimizer---allows to learn a finite hypothesis class of size in time
. We also study the implications of our results to learning in
repeated zero-sum games, in a setting where the players have access to oracles
that compute, in constant time, their best-response to any mixed strategy of
their opponent. We show that the runtime required for approximating the minimax
value of the game in this setting is , yielding
again a quadratic improvement upon the oracle-free setting, where
is known to be tight
On k-Column Sparse Packing Programs
We consider the class of packing integer programs (PIPs) that are column
sparse, i.e. there is a specified upper bound k on the number of constraints
that each variable appears in. We give an (ek+o(k))-approximation algorithm for
k-column sparse PIPs, improving on recent results of and
. We also show that the integrality gap of our linear programming
relaxation is at least 2k-1; it is known that k-column sparse PIPs are
-hard to approximate. We also extend our result (at the loss
of a small constant factor) to the more general case of maximizing a submodular
objective over k-column sparse packing constraints.Comment: 19 pages, v3: additional detail
On-chip beam rotators, polarizers and adiabatic mode converters through low-loss waveguides with variable cross-sections
Photonics integrated circuitry would benefit considerably from the ability to arbitrarily control waveguide cross-sections with high precision and low loss, in order to provide more degrees of freedom in manipulating propagating light. Here, we report on a new optical-fibres-compatible glass waveguide by femtosecond laser writing, namely spherical phase induced multi-core waveguide (SPIM-WG), which addresses this challenging task with three dimensional on-chip light control. Precise deformation of cross-sections is achievable along the waveguide, with shapes and sizes finely controllable of high resolution in both horizontal and vertical transversal directions. We observed that these waveguides have high refractive index contrast of 0.017, low propagation loss of 0.14 dB/cm, and very low coupling loss of 0.19 dB coupled from a single mode fibre. SPIM-WG devices were easily fabricated that were able to perform on-chip beam rotation through varying angles, or manipulate polarization state of propagating light for target wavelengths. We also demonstrated SPIM-WG mode converters that provide arbitrary adiabatic mode conversion with high efficiency between symmetric and asymmetric non-uniform modes; examples include circular, elliptical modes and asymmetric modes from ppKTP waveguides which are generally applied in frequency conversion and quantum light sources. Created inside optical glass, these waveguides and devices have the capability to operate across ultra-broad bands from visible to infrared wavelengths. The compatibility with optical fibre also paves the way toward packaged photonic integrated circuitry, which usually needs input and output fibre connections
Near Real Time Data Processing In ICOS RI
This paper describes the implementation of (near)
real-time (NRT) data processing in the recently launched
European environmental research infrastructure ICOS. NRT
applications include handling of raw sensor data (including safe
storage and quality control), processing and evaluation of
greenhouse gas mixing ratios and exchange fluxes, and the
provision of data to the RIâs user communities
Phenotype of autosomal dominant spastic paraplegia linked to chromosome 2
Summary We report the clinical features of 12 families with autosomal dominant spastic paraplegia (ADSP) linked to the SPG4 locus on chromosome 2p, the major locus for this disorder that accounts for âŒ40% of the families. Among 93 gene carriers, 32 (34%) were unaware of symptoms but were clinically affected. Haplotype reconstruction showed that 90% of the asymptomatic gene carriers presented increased reflexes and/or extensor plantar responses independent of age at examination. The mean age at onset was 29 years, ranging from 1 to 63 years. Intra- as well as inter-familial variability of age at onset was important, but did not result from anticipation. Phenotypeâgenotype correlations and comparison with SPG3 and SPG5 families indicated that despite the variability of age at onset, SPG4 is a single genetic entity but no clinical features distinguish individual SPG4 patients from those with SPG3 or SPG5 mutation
The complex TIE between macrophages and angiogenesis
Macrophages are primarily known as phagocytic immune cells, but they also play a role in diverse processes, such as morphogenesis, homeostasis and regeneration. In this review, we discuss the influence of macrophages on angiogenesis, the process of new blood vessel formation from the pre-existing vasculature. Macrophages play crucial roles at each step of the angiogenic cascade, starting from new blood vessel sprouting to the remodelling of the vascular plexus and vessel maturation. Macrophages form promising targets for both pro- and anti-angiogenic treatments. However, to target macrophages, we will first need to understand the mechanisms that control the functional plasticity of macrophages during each of the steps of the angiogenic cascade. Here, we review recent insights in this topic. Special attention will be given to the TIE2-expressing macrophage (TEM), which is a subtype of highly angiogenic macrophages that is able to influence angiogenesis via the angiopoietin-TIE pathway
Auditory Enhancement and Second Language Experience in Spanish and English Weighting of Secondary Voicing Cues
The role of secondary cues in voicing categorization was investigated in three listener groups: Monolingual English (n=20) and Spanish speakers (n=20), and Spanish speakers with significant English experience (n=16). Results showed that, in all three groups, participants used onset f0 in making voicing decisions only in the positive voice onset time (VOT) range (short lag and long lag tokens), while there was no effect of onset f0 on voicing categorization within the negative VOT range (voicing lead tokens) for any of the participant groups. These results support an auditory enhancement view of perceptual cue weighting: Onset f0 serves as a secondary cue to voicing only in the positive VOT range where it is not overshadowed by the presence of pre-voicing. Moreover, results showed that Spanish learners of English gave a significantly greater weight to onset f0 in their voicing decisions than did listeners in either of the other two groups. This result supports the view that learners may overweight secondary cues to distinguish between non-native categories that are assimilated to the same native category on the basis of a primary cue

Attachment style, assertive communication, and safer-sex behavior
This research tested the proposition that the effect of attachment security on safer-sex practice may be mediated by communication patterns. One hundred eighty-five undergraduate students completed questionnaire measures of attachment, assertiveness, and attitudes to communication about AIDS. Eight weeks later, they reported on their practice of safer sex in the period since the first testing session. Hierarchical regressions showed that at Step 1, anxiety about relationships (a measure of insecure attachment) was associated with less safer-sex practice, for all outcome measures. Attitudes to communication about AIDS added to the prediction of general reports of safer-sex practice: in line with the mediational model, anxiety about relationships became unimportant as a predictor when communication variables were included. Communication variables failed to add to the prediction of safer sex on the most recent encounter, and both anxiety about relationships and attitudes to communication about AIDS predicted condom use. Some gender differences in patterns of prediction were noted. The results are discussed in terms of attachment style and its links with the negotiation of sexual practice and relationship issues
