Predicting convective blueshift and radial-velocity dispersion due to granulation for FGK stars
To detect Earth-mass planets using the Doppler method, a major obstacle is to
differentiate the planetary signal from intrinsic stellar variability (e.g.,
pulsations, granulation, spots and plages). Convective blueshift, which results
from small-scale convection at the surface of Sun-like stars, is relevant for
Earth-twin detections as it exhibits Doppler noise on the order of 1 m/s. Here,
we present a simple model for convective blueshift based on fundamental
equations of stellar structure. Our model successfully matches observations of
convective blueshift for FGK stars. Based on our model, we also compute the
intrinsic noise floor for stellar granulation in the radial velocity
observations. We find that for a given mass range, stars with higher
metallicities display lower radial-velocity dispersion due to granulation, in
agreement with MHD simulations. We also provide a set of formulae to predict
the amplitude of radial-velocity dispersion due to granulation as a function of
stellar parameters. Our work is vital in identifying the most amenable stellar
targets for EPRV surveys and radial velocity follow-up programmes for TESS,

The incidence and risk factors for new onset atrial fibrillation in the PROSPER study
Aims Atrial fibrillation/flutter (AF) is the most common arrhythmia in older people. It associates with reduced exercise capacity, increased risk of stroke, and mortality. We aimed to determine retrospectively whether pravastatin reduces the incidence of AF and whether any electrocardiographic measures or clinical conditions might be risk factors for its development. Methods and results The PROspective Study of Pravastatin in the Elderly at Risk (PROSPER) was a randomized, double-blind controlled trial that recruited 5804 individuals aged 70-82 years with a history of, or risk factors for, vascular disease. A total of 2891 were allocated to pravastatin and 2913 to placebo; mean follow-up was 3.2 years. Electrocardiograms (ECGs), which were recorded at baseline, annually thereafter, and at run-out, were processed by computer and reviewed manually. In all, 264 of 2912 (9.1%) of the placebo group and 283 of 2888 (9.8%) of the pravastatin-treated group developed AF [hazard ratio 1.08 (0.92,1.28), P = 0.35)]. Multivariate analysis showed that PR and QTc intervals, age, left ventricular hypertrophy, and ST-T abnormalities were related to development of AF after adjustment for many variables including alcohol consumption, which itself was univariately predictive of developing AF. Previous myocardial infarction on the ECG was not a risk factor. A history of vascular disease was strongly linked with developing AF but not diabetes and hypertension. Conclusion Pravastatin does not reduce the incidence of AF in older people at risk of vascular disease, at least in the short-medium term. Parent Stars of Extrasolar Planets. X. Lithium Abundances and vsini Revisited
We determine Li abundances and vsini values from new spectra of 53 stars with
Doppler-detected planets not included in our previous papers in this series. We
also examine two sets of stars without detected planets, which together serve
as our comparison sample. Using the method of comparison of Li abundances and
vsini values between two sets of stars we introduced in Gonzalez (2008), we
confirm that these two quantities are smaller among stars with planets compared
to stars without detected planets near the solar temperature. The transition
from low to high Li abundance among SWPs occurs near 5850 K, a revision of
about 50 K from our previous determination. The transition from low to high
vsini occurs near 6000 K, but this temperature is not as well constrained.Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS; 14 pages, 13 figures, 3 table

Deaths in people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities from both COVID-19 and non-COVID causes in the first weeks of the pandemic in London: a hospital case note review
Objective To undertake a case review of deaths in a 6-week period during the COVID-19 pandemic commencing with the first death in the hospital from COVID-19 on 12th of March 2020 and contrast this with the same period in 2019.
Setting A large London teaching hospital.
Participants Three groups were compared: group 1—COVID-19-associated deaths in the 6-week period (n=243), group 2—non-COVID deaths in the same period (n=136) and group 3—all deaths in a comparison period of the same 6 weeks in 2019 (n=194).
Primary and secondary outcome measures This was a descriptive analysis of death case series review and as such no primary or secondary outcomes were pre-stipulated.
Results Deaths in patients from the Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) communities in the pandemic period significantly increased both in the COVID-19 group (OR=2.43, 95% CI=1.60–3.68, p<0.001) and the non-COVID group (OR=1.76, 95% CI=1.09–2.83, p=0.02) during this time period and the increase was independent of differences in comorbidities, sex, age or deprivation. While the absolute number of deaths increased in 2020 compared with 2019, across all three groups the distribution of deaths by age was very similar. Our analyses confirm major risk factors for COVID-19 mortality including male sex, diabetes, having multiple comorbidities and background from the BAME communities.
Conclusions There was no evidence of COVID-19 deaths occurring disproportionately in the elderly compared with non-COVID deaths in this period in 2020 and 2019. Deaths in the BAME communities were over-represented in both COVID-19 and non-COVID groups, highlighting the need for detailed research in order to fully understand the influence of ethnicity on susceptibility to illness, mortality and health-seeking behaviour during the pandemic
Stellar surface magneto-convection as a source of astrophysical noise II. Center-to-limb parameterisation of absorption line profiles and comparison to observations
Manifestations of stellar activity (such as star-spots, plage/faculae, and
convective flows) are well known to induce spectroscopic signals often referred
to as astrophysical noise by exoplanet hunters. For example, setting an
ultimate goal of detecting true Earth-analogs demands reaching radial velocity
(RV) precisions of ~9 cm/s. While this is becoming technically feasible with
the latest generation of highly stabilised spectrographs, it is astrophysical
noise that sets the true fundamental barrier on attainable RV precisions. In
this paper we parameterise the impact of solar surface magneto-convection on
absorption line profiles, and extend the analysis from the solar disc centre
(Paper I) to the solar limb. Off disc-centre, the plasma flows orthogonal to
the granule tops begin to lie along the line-of-sight and those parallel to the
granule tops are no longer completely aligned with the observer. Moreover, the
granulation is corrugated and the granules can block other granules, as well as
the intergranular lane components. Overall, the visible plasma flows and
geometry of the corrugated surface significantly impact the resultant line
profiles and induce centre-to-limb variations in shape and net position. We
detail these herein, and compare to various solar observations. We find our
granulation parameterisation can recreate realistic line profiles and induced
radial velocity shifts, across the stellar disc, indicative of both those found
in computationally heavy radiative 3D magnetohydrodynamical simulations and

Relationship between the Velocity Ellipsoids of Galactic-Disk Stars and their Ages and Metallicities
The dependences of the velocity ellipsoids of F-G stars of the thin disk of
the Galaxy on their ages and metallicities are analyzed based on the new
version of the Geneva-Copenhagen Catalog. The age dependences of the major,
middle, and minor axes of the ellipsoids, and also of the dispersion of the
total residual veltocity, obey power laws with indices 0.25,0.29,0.32, and 0.27
(with uncertainties \pm 0.02). Due to the presence of thick-disk objects, the
analogous indices for all nearby stars are about a factor of 1.5 larger.
Attempts to explain such values are usually based on modeling relaxation
processes in the Galactic disk. With increasing age, the velocity ellipsoid
increases in size and becomes appreciably more spherical, turns toward the
direction of the Galactic center, and loses angular momentum. The shape of the
velocity ellipsoid remains far from equilibrium. With increasing metallicity,
the velocity ellipsoid for stars of mixed age increases in size, displays a
weak tendency to become more spherical, and turns toward the direction of the
Galactic center (with these changes occurring substantially more rapidly in the
transition through the metallicity [Fe/H]= -0.25). Thus, the ellipsoid changes
similarly to the way it does with age; however, with decreasing metallicity,
the rotational velocity about the Galactic center monotonically increases,
rather than decreases(!). Moreover, the power-law indices for the age
dependences of the axes depend on the metallicity, and display a maximum near
[Fe/H]=-0.1. The age dependences of all the velocity-ellipsoid parameters for
stars with equal metallicity are roughly the same. It is proposed that the
appearance of a metallicity dependence of the velocity ellipsoids for thin-disk

The ATLAS SCT grounding and shielding concept and implementation
This paper presents a complete description of Virgo, the French-Italian gravitational wave detector. The detector, built at Cascina, near Pisa (Italy), is a very large Michelson interferometer, with 3 km-long arms. In this paper, following a presentation of the physics requirements, leading to the specifications for the construction of the detector, a detailed description of all its different elements is given. These include civil engineering infrastructures, a huge ultra-high vacuum (UHV) chamber (about 6000 cubic metres), all of the optical components, including high quality mirrors and their seismic isolating suspensions, all of the electronics required to control the interferometer and for signal detection. The expected performances of these different elements are given, leading to an overall sensitivity curve as a function of the incoming gravitational wave frequency. This description represents the detector as built and used in the first data-taking runs. Improvements in different parts have been and continue to be performed, leading to better sensitivities. These will be detailed in a forthcoming paper
Corotation: its influence on the chemical abundance pattern of the Galaxy
A simple theory for the chemical enrichment of the Galaxy which takes into
account the effects of spiral arms on heavy elements output was developed. In
the framework of the model with the corotation close to the position of the Sun
