    Mapping Atomic Motions with Electrons: Toward the Quantum Limit to Imaging Chemistry

    Recent advances in ultrafast electron and X-ray diffraction have pushed imaging of structural dynamics into the femtosecond time domain, that is, the fundamental time scale of atomic motion. New physics can be reached beyond the scope of traditional diffraction or reciprocal space imaging. By exploiting the high time resolution, it has been possible to directly observe the collapse of nearly innumerable possible nuclear motions to a few key reaction modes that direct chemistry. It is this reduction in dimensionality in the transition state region that makes chemistry a transferable concept, with the same class of reactions being applicable to synthetic strategies to nearly arbitrary levels of complexity. The ability to image the underlying key reaction modes has been achieved with resolution to relative changes in atomic positions to better than 0.01 Å, that is, comparable to thermal motions. We have effectively reached the fundamental space-time limit with respect to the reaction energetics and imaging the acting forces. In the process of ensemble measured structural changes, we have missed the quantum aspects of chemistry. This perspective reviews the current state of the art in imaging chemistry in action and poses the challenge to access quantum information on the dynamics. There is the possibility with the present ultrabright electron and X-ray sources, at least in principle, to do tomographic reconstruction of quantum states in the form of a Wigner function and density matrix for the vibrational, rotational, and electronic degrees of freedom. Accessing this quantum information constitutes the ultimate demand on the spatial and temporal resolution of reciprocal space imaging of chemistry. Given the much shorter wavelength and corresponding intrinsically higher spatial resolution of current electron sources over X-rays, this Perspective will focus on electrons to provide an overview of the challenge on both the theory and the experimental fronts to extract the quantum aspects of molecular dynamics

    Worsening of cerebral hyperemia by the administration of terlipressin in acute liver failure with severe hepatic encephalopathy

    There is increasing evidence that terlipressin is useful in patients with cirrhosis and hepatorenal syndrome, but there are no data of its use in patients with acute liver failure (ALF) in whom hepatorenal syndrome is common. Although terlipressin produces systemic vasoconstriction, it produces cerebral vasodilatation and may increase cerebral blood flow (CBF). Increased CBF contributes to intracranial hypertension in patients with ALF. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety of terlipressin in patients with ALF with respect to cerebral haemodynamics. Six successive patients with ALF were electively ventilated for grade IV hepatic encephalopathy. Patients were monitored invasively and CBF was measured (Kety- Schmidt technique). Measurements were made before, at 1, 3 hour and 5 hours after intravenous (single bolus) administration of terlipressin (0.005 mg/kg) )intravenously (single bolus), median 0.25mg (range 0.2-0.3). There was no significant change in heart rate, mean arterial pressure or cardiac output. CBF and jugular venous oxygen saturation both increased significantly at 1 hour (p<0.0=0.016) respectively. Intracranial pressure increased significantly at 21 hours (p<0=.0.031), returning back to baseline values at 42 hours. This study shows that administration of terlipressin, at a dose that did not alter systemic haemodynamicshemodynamics, resulted in worsening of cerebral hyperemia and intracranial hypertension in patients with ALF and severe hepatic encephalopathy. These data suggest the need to exercise extreme caution in the use of terlipressin in these patients in view of its potentially deleterious consequences on cerebral haemodynamics

    Energy efficient engine high-pressure turbine single crystal vane and blade fabrication technology report

    The objective of the High-Pressure Turbine Fabrication Program was to demonstrate the application and feasibility of Pratt & Whitney Aircraft-developed two-piece, single crystal casting and bonding technology on the turbine blade and vane configurations required for the high-pressure turbine in the Energy Efficient Engine. During the first phase of the program, casting feasibility was demonstrated. Several blade and vane halves were made for the bonding trials, plus solid blades and vanes were successfully cast for materials evaluation tests. Specimens exhibited the required microstructure and chemical composition. Bonding feasibility was demonstrated in the second phase of the effort. Bonding yields of 75 percent for the vane and 30 percent for the blade were achieved, and methods for improving these yield percentages were identified. A bond process was established for PWA 1480 single crystal material which incorporated a transient liquid phase interlayer. Bond properties were substantiated and sensitivities determined. Tooling die materials were identified, and an advanced differential thermal expansion tooling concept was incorporated into the bond process

    Latent image diffraction from submicron photoresist gratings

    Light scattering from latent images in photoresist is useful for lithographic tool characterization, process monitoring, and process control. In particular, closed‐loop control of lithographic processes is critical for high yield, low cost device manufacturing. In this work, we report use of pulsed laser diffraction from photoresist latent images in 0.24 μm pitch distributed feedback laser gratings. Gated detection of pulsed light scattering permits high spatial resolution probing using ultraviolet light without altering the latent image. A correlation between latent image and etched grating diffraction efficiencies is demonstrated and shows the value of "upstream" monitoring

    We discuss computation of the special values of partial zeta functions associated to totally real number fields. The main tool is the \emph{Eisenstein cocycle} Ψ\Psi , a group cocycle for GLn(Z)GL_{n} (\Z ); the special values are computed as periods of Ψ\Psi , and are expressed in terms of generalized Dedekind sums.
