Illuminance and luminance distributions of a prototype ambient illumination system for Space Station Freedom
Preliminary results of research conducted in the late 1970's indicate that perceptual qualities of an enclosure can be influenced by the distribution of illumination within the enclosure. Subjective impressions such as spaciousness, perceptual clarity, and relaxation or tenseness, among others, appear to be related to different combinations of surface luminance. A prototype indirect ambient illumination system was developed which will allow crew members to alter surface luminance distributions within an enclosed module, thus modifying perceptual cues to match crew preferences. A traditional lensed direct lighting system was compared to the prototype utilizing the full-scale mockup of Space Station Freedom developed by Marshall Space Flight Center. The direct lensed system was installed in the habitation module with the indirect prototype deployed in the U.S. laboratory module. Analysis centered on the illuminance and luminance distributions resultant from these systems and the implications of various luminaire spacing options. Effect of a simulated engine jet blowing above an arrow wing at Mach 2.0
The effects of a gas jet simulating a turbojet engine exhaust blowing above a cambered and twisted arrow wing were investigated. Tests were conducted in the Langley 4-foot supersonic pressure tunnel at a Mach number of 2.0. Nozzle pressure ratios from 1 to 64 were tested with both helium and air used as jet gases. The tests were conducted at angles of attack from -2 deg to 8 deg at a Reynolds number of 9,840,000 per meter. Only the forces and moments on the wing were measured. Results of the investigation indicated that the jet blowing over the wing caused reductions in maximum lift-drag ratio of about 4 percent for helium and 6 percent for air at their respective design nozzle pressure ratios, relative to jet-off data. Moderate changes in the longitudinal, vertical, or angular positions of the jet relative to the wing had little effect on the wing aerodynamic characteristics
Quantum Control of Qubits and Atomic Motion Using Ultrafast Laser Pulses
Pulsed lasers offer significant advantages over CW lasers in the coherent
control of qubits. Here we review the theoretical and experimental aspects of
controlling the internal and external states of individual trapped atoms with
pulse trains. Two distinct regimes of laser intensity are identified. When the
pulses are sufficiently weak that the Rabi frequency is much smaller
than the trap frequency \otrap, sideband transitions can be addressed and
atom-atom entanglement can be accomplished in much the same way as with CW
lasers. By contrast, if the pulses are very strong (\Omega \gg \otrap),
impulsive spin-dependent kicks can be combined to create entangling gates which
are much faster than a trap period. These fast entangling gates should work
outside of the Lamb-Dicke regime and be insensitive to thermal atomic motion.Comment: 16 pages, 15 figure
Price Endogeneity and Marginal Cost Effects on Incentive Compatible Stormwater Management Policies
Incentive based stormwater management policies offer the prospect of reducing urban stormwater runoff while increasing developer profits. An incentive compatible Stormwater Banking Program (SBP) is presented that allows developers to build at higher residential densities in exchange for including low impact stormwater Best Management Practices (BMPs) in the development’s stormwater management infrastructure. Price endogeneity presents itself when the smaller residential lots created by building at a greater density sell for a lower price than the original, larger lots. Stormwater management authorities must be aware of this and the effects of the program participation fee structure in designing voluntary incentive based policies that meet runoff reduction objectives.Farm Management,

A voluntary stormwater management program that is incentive compatible between residential developers and regulators produces an outcome that simultaneously protects/enhances water quality and increases developer profits. The role of sign in students' modeling of scalar equations
We describe students revising the mathematical form of physics equations to
match the physical situation they are describing, even though their revision
violates physical laws. In an unfamiliar air resistance problem, a majority of
students in a sophomore level mechanics class at some point wrote Newton's
Second Law as F = -ma; they were using this form to ensure that the sign of the
force pointed in a direction consistent with the chosen coordinate system while
assuming that some variables have only positive value. We use one student's
detailed explanation to suggest that students' issues with variables are
context-dependent, and that much of their reasoning is useful for productive
