Broadband multi-wavelength campaign on PKS 2005-489

The spectral energy distribution (SED) of high-frequency peaked BL Lac objects (HBL) is characterized by two peaks: one in the UV-X-ray and one in the GeV-TeV regime. An interesting object for analyzing these broadband characteristics is PKS 2005-489, which in 2004 showed the softest TeV spectrum ever measured. In 2009, a multi-wavelength campaign has been conducted with, for the first time, simultaneous observations by H.E.S.S. (TeV), Fermi/LAT (GeV), RXTE (keV), Swift (keV, UV, optical) and ATOM (optical) to cover the two peaks of the SED. During this campaign PKS 2005-489 underwent a high state in all wavebands which gives the opportunity to study in detail the emission processes of a high state of this interesting HBL.Comment: 2009 Fermi Symposium; eConf Proceedings C09112

Effect of spin orbit scattering on the magnetic and superconducting properties of nearly ferromagnetic metals: application to granular Pt

We calculate the effect of scattering on the static, exchange enhanced, spin susceptibility and show that in particular spin orbit scattering leads to a reduction of the giant moments and spin glass freezing temperature due to dilute magnetic impurities. The harmful spin fluctuation contribution to the intra-grain pairing interaction is strongly reduced opening the way for BCS superconductivity. We are thus able to explain the superconducting and magnetic properties recently observed in granular Pt as due to scattering effects in single small grains.Comment: 9 pages 3 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. WHEN A FIRE LEADS TO A DRINK: ENHANCEMENT OF ALCOHOL-SEEKING BY MICROINJECTIONS OF NICOTINE DIRECTLY INTO THE REWARD NEUROCIRCUITRY

poster abstractAlcohol addiction is a cyclical disorder that is characterized by periods of alcohol consumption and abstinence. The periods of abstinence are frequently brief, and the rate of relapse to alcohol consumption is typically higher than 95% within a year. Most alcoholics are not just alcoholics. The vast majority (80-95%) of alcoholics also concurrently use, or are dependent on, nicotine. During periods of alcohol abstinence, nicotine use dramatically increases. The use of nicotine can potentiate self-reported craving for alcohol and the amount of alcohol used following a relapse episode. The goal of the present project was to determine the biological basis of nicotine’s ability to stimulate alcohol (EtOH)-seeking in a rodent model of alcoholism (alcohol-preferring [P] rat). Specifically, the current project examined the effect of nicotine on EtOH-seeking when administered directly into the brain reward neurocircuit (posterior Ventral Tegmental Area – pVTA). In order to determine the neurotransmitter systems regulating nicotine’s ability to enhance EtOH-seeking when administered into the pVTA, two subsequent studies examined the effect of co-administration of nicotine with a acetylcholine nicotine receptor (AchN) antagonist (mecamylamine (MEC)) or with a serotonin-3 (5HT3) receptor antagonist (zacopride (Zac)). Nicotine binds with high affinity to both the AchN and 5HT3 receptors. The data collected indicated that at very low concentrations nicotine microinjected into the pVTA increased EtOH-seeking in P rats. Co-administration of mecamylamine or zacopride blocked nicotine’s ability to potentiate EtOH-seeking. Overall, the results show that nicotine can enhance alcohol-seeking behaviors through activation of the AchN and 5-HT3 receptors in pVTA. The clinical implication of the data set would be that to reduce the amount of alcohol-craving, which could lead to relapse, nicotine use should also be terminated

Dirichlet Boundary Value Problems of the Ernst Equation

We demonstrate how the solution to an exterior Dirichlet boundary value problem of the axisymmetric, stationary Einstein equations can be found in terms of generalized solutions of the Backlund type. The proof that this generalization procedure is valid is given, which also proves conjectures about earlier representations of the gravitational field corresponding to rotating disks of dust in terms of Backlund type solutions.Comment: 22 pages, to appear in Phys. Associations between cadmium exposure and neurocognitive test scores in a cross-sectional study of US adults

Background: Low-level environmental cadmium exposure and neurotoxicity has not been well studied in adults. Our goal was to evaluate associations between neurocognitive exam scores and a biomarker of cumulative cadmium exposure among adults in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III). Methods: NHANES III is a nationally representative cross-sectional survey of the U.S. population conducted between 1988 and 1994. We analyzed data from a subset of participants, age 20–59, who participated in a computer-based neurocognitive evaluation. There were four outcome measures: the Simple Reaction Time Test (SRTT: visual motor speed), the Symbol Digit Substitution Test (SDST: attention/perception), the Serial Digit Learning Test (SDLT) trials-to-criterion, and the SDLT total-error-score (SDLT-tests: learning recall/short-term memory). We fit multivariable-adjusted models to estimate associations between urinary cadmium concentrations and test scores. Results: 5662 participants underwent neurocognitive screening, and 5572 (98%) of these had a urinary cadmium level available. Prior to multivariable-adjustment, higher urinary cadmium concentration was associated with worse performance in each of the 4 outcomes. After multivariable-adjustment most of these relationships were not significant, and age was the most influential variable in reducing the association magnitudes. However among never-smokers with no known occupational cadmium exposure the relationship between urinary cadmium and SDST score (attention/perception) was significant: a 1 μg/L increase in urinary cadmium corresponded to a 1.93% (95%CI: 0.05, 3.81) decrement in performance. Conclusions: These results suggest that higher cumulative cadmium exposure in adults may be related to subtly decreased performance in tasks requiring attention and perception, particularly among those adults whose cadmium exposure is primarily though diet (no smoking or work based cadmium exposure). This association was observed among exposure levels that have been considered to be without adverse effects and these levels are common in U.S. adults. Thus further research into the potential neurocognitive effects of cadmium exposure is warranted. Because cumulative cadmium exposure may mediate some of the effects of age and smoking on cognition, adjusting for these variables may result in the underestimation of associations with cumulative cadmium exposure. Prospective studies that include never-smokers and non-occupationally exposed individuals are needed to clarify these issues

1ES 0229+200: An extreme blazar with a very high minimum Lorentz factor

The blazar 1ES 0229+200 is a high frequency peaked BL Lac object with a hard TeV spectrum extending to 10 TeV. Its unusual spectral characteristics make it a frequently used probe for intergalactic radiation and magnetic fields. With new, simultaneous observations in the optical, ultraviolet (UV) and X-rays, the synchrotron emission is probed in great detail. The X-ray emission varies by a factor of ~2 in 2009, while being rather stable in 2010. The X-ray spectrum is very hard (\Gamma ~ 1.8) and it shows an indication of excess absorption above the Galactic value. The X-ray emission is detected up to ~100 keV without any significant cut-off, thus 1ES 0229+200 belongs to the class of extreme blazars. The simultaneous measured, host galaxy- and extinction-corrected optical and UV fluxes illustrate that the cut-off of the low energy part of the synchrotron emission is located in the UV regime. The minimum energy of the electron distribution has to be rather high to account for this cut-off. This implies that there is a narrow-band energy distribution function of radiating electrons, which is responsible for the unusually hard TeV spectrum. Other extreme blazars have similar synchrotron peak frequencies but much softer TeV spectra, hence 1ES 0229+200 has one of the highest inverse Compton (IC) peak frequency and the narrowest electron distribution among the extreme blazars known to date.Comment: accepted for publication in Astronomy&Astrophysic

Synthesis and cation-receptor properties of macrocyclic imines of anthraquinone

    Get PDF
At the present study a series of crown-containing imines of 1-hydroxy-9,10-anthraquinone with donor and acceptor substituents at the anthraquinone nucleus were synthesized. Compounds were prepared photochemically from the corresponding photoactive 1-phenoxyanthraquinones and 4-aminobenzo-15-crown-5 ether. It was established spectrophotometrically that for crown-containing anthraquinone imines that are characterized by "imine-enamine" prototropic tautomerism, the insertion of acceptor substituents shifts the equilibrium to the "enamine" form. This shift leads to essential spectral changes in complexing chlor- and nitrocontaining macrocyclic imines of anthraquinone with alkali and alkaline-earth metal cations

Three-Dimensional Fermi Surface of Overdoped La-Based Cuprates

We present a soft x-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of the overdoped high-temperature superconductors La2x_{2-x}Srx_xCuO4_4 and La1.8x_{1.8-x}Eu0.2_{0.2}Srx_xCuO4_4. In-plane and out-of-plane components of the Fermi surface are mapped by varying the photoemission angle and the incident photon energy. No kzk_z dispersion is observed along the nodal direction, whereas a significant antinodal kzk_z dispersion is identified. Based on a tight-binding parametrization, we discuss the implications for the density of states near the van-Hove singularity. Our results suggest that the large electronic specific heat found in overdoped La2x_{2-x}Srx_xCuO4_4 can not be assigned to the van-Hove singularity alone. We therefore propose quantum criticality induced by a collapsing pseudogap phase as a plausible explanation for observed enhancement of electronic specific heat

    Integrable Systems in Stringy Gravity

Static axisymmetric Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton and stationary axisymmetric Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton-Axion (EMDA) theories in four space-time dimensions are shown to be integrable by means of the inverse scattering transform method. The proof is based on the coset-space representation of the 4-dim theory in a space-time admitting a Killing vector field. Hidden symmetry group of the four-dimensional EMDA theory, unifying T and S string dualities, is shown to be Sp(2, R) acting transitively on the coset Sp(2, R)/U(2). In the case of two-parameter Abelian space-time isometry group, the hidden symmetry is the corresponding infinite-dimensional group of the Geroch-Kinnersley-Chitre type.Comment: 8 pages, LATEX, MSU-DTP-94/21, October 9

Macroscopic nucleation phenomena in continuum media with long-range interactions

    Get PDF
Nucleation, commonly associated with discontinuous transformations between metastable and stable phases, is crucial in fields as diverse as atmospheric science and nanoscale electronics. Traditionally, it is considered a microscopic process (at most nano-meter), implying the formation of a microscopic nucleus of the stable phase. Here we show for the first time, that considering long-range interactions mediated by elastic distortions, nucleation can be a macroscopic process, with the size of the critical nucleus proportional to the total system size. This provides a new concept of "macroscopic barrier-crossing nucleation". We demonstrate the effect in molecular dynamics simulations of a model spin-crossover system with two molecular states of different sizes, causing elastic distortions.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures.
