    Norwegian physiotherapy teachers’ experience from working in a partnership project in Sudan - A case study approach

    Introduction and Aims: Professionals working abroad as part of a partnership program is a central act of internationalization among higher education institutions. Little research has been carried out on this topic. The goal of this study was, therefore, to explore, describe and discuss the workplace learning factors – especially cultural factors – influencing Norwegian physiotherapy teachers, working in an international partnership project at a women’s university in Sudan. Methods: The study had a qualitative case-study design, intended to provide an in-depth understanding of workplace learning processes. We used a multifaceted approach which included individual interviews and document analyses. Results: We identified individual, social and institutional factors that influenced workplace learning. Culture is decisive at all levels, and knowledge, skills and attitudes are culturally situated. The Norwegian teachers’ learning was found to be dependent on both internal and external factors and the pre- and post-project periods. Conclusion: This study shows that a workplace perspective on the experience of Norwegian physiotherapy teachers gives us a better understanding of the important factors, associated with such a project. Working abroad not only requires preparation on the part of the sending and host institution but also from the person working abroad (prior to, during and after the stay abroad) if workplace learning is to occur.publishedVersio

    Physiotherapy Competence in Product Development: Work Approaches and Experiences from a Business Project

    Background: Product development is an arena where few physiotherapists work. The questions we asked were: How can physiotherapists help with product development in a company? What experiences have physiotherapists after completing a product development project? Main part: This article, based on specific work assignments with the development of a carrier for children, is an example of how physiotherapists, in collaboration with other professions, can work with product development. The tasks for the physiotherapists were product development, completion of a study for users and ergonomic analysis. The study was conducted through focus group interviews, keeping a log book and individual interviews. Conclusion: This project showed that physiotherapists had important expertise in the process of developing products. Especially the expertise in muscular-skeletal disorders, ergonomics, motor development and project work were useful. Prerequisites for a product development project’s success is the involvement of management, flexibility in work tasks for the physiotherapists, user involvement and close cooperation with other involved professional groups

    Online collaborative learning - a case study

    Background - Collaboration in combination with student activities is an acknowledged pedagogical approach within higher education and teaching. A 15 ECTS credit online course in philosophy of science and methods was off ered to 11 master programs at the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences, Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL). The aim of the study was to explore, describe and discuss the factors influencing small group members’ learning in this online course. Methods - We performed 13 individual and six focus group interviews of 30 master students. Data was analyzed using content analysis. Results - The students worked according to three diff erent working processes to solve the course assignments and learning outcomes. Data was analyzed using content analysis

    Collaborative learning in small groups in an online course – a case study

    Background The ability to learn collaboratively and work in teams is an essential competency in both educational and healthcare settings, and collaborative student activities are acknowledged as being an important part of the pedagogical approach in higher education and teaching. The course that was the focus of this research, a 15-ECTS-credit online course in philosophy of science, ethics, and research methods, was offered online as part of 11 master’s-level health programmes at a university in Norway. Collaborative learning in combination with digital teaching tools was the preferred pedagogical approach in the online course. The aim of the study was to describe, explore and discuss how the students collaborated in small groups in an online course to learn. Methods We performed six focus groups and 13 individual interviews from February 2018 to May 2019, conducting a qualitative case study with a content analysis of the data collected. The participants were master students in the same faculty at a university in Norway. All the included participants had fulfilled the 15 ECTS credit course. Results Our study revealed that the collaboration in small groups resulted in three different working processes, depending on the students’ ability to be flexible and take responsibility for their own and common learning. The three different working processes that emerged from our data were 1. joint responsibility – flexible organization; 2. individual responsibility – flexible organization; and 3. individual responsibility – unorganized. None of the groups changed their working process during their course, even though some experienced their strategy as inadequate. Conclusions Our study showed that despite similar factors such as context, assignments and student autonomy, the students chose different collaboration strategies to accomplish the online course learning objectives. Each group chose their own working process, but only the strategy 1. joint responsibility – flexible organization seemed to promote collaboration, discussion, and team work to complete the complex assignments in the online course. The result from our study may be helpful in designing and planning future online courses; hence online learning requires a focus on how students collaborate and learn online, to gain knowledge and understanding through group discussion

    Interprofessional education as a contributor to professional and interprofessional identities

    According to the World Health Organization interprofessional education (IPE) is a necessary step in preparing a collaborative practice-ready health work force. However, the processes of developing professional identity within interprofessional education programs have not been fully explored and require a deeper understanding. Participation in interprofessional education groups may influence the development of professional identity including increased awareness of one’s own profession-specific competence as well as socialization into a professional role. Interprofessional education is a dynamic social process related to students’ memberships in IPE-groups. We conducted focus groups with representatives from students in seven different professional education programs involved in interprofessional education during all three years of their educational programs. We used the principles of systematic text condensation as an analytical frame. This article is a contribution toward grasping how IPE can contribute to both professional and interprofessional identity. Group collaboration in interprofessional education enabled students to identify with their profession as well as creating a safe place to gain insight into other professions’ competencies. Moreover, students could obtain knowledge about being a professional participant and could enrich their professional identity, as they were involved with students from other professions. IPE-groups strengthened professional identity rather than threatened it

    Interprofessional Workplace Learning in Primary Care: Students from Different Health Professions Work in Teams in Real-Life Settings

    Interprofessional education may be defined as an occasion when two or more professions learn with, from, and about each other in order to improve collaboration and quality of care. We studied the self-reported experiences from Norwegian health care students participating in interprofessional workplace learning in primary care. We discuss the results particularly in light of self-determination theory. During 2012, 24 students from eight different health educations at the University of Bergen and Bergen University College participated in interprofessional learning in primary care organized by the Center for Inter-professional Workplace Learning in Primary Care, Bergen. The students had their training in nursing homes and public health clinics, and they wrote reflective notes describing their learning experiences. The material was analyzed by systematic text condensation. The qualitative data analyses revealed five major areas of learning experiences from workplace practice: learning in an interprofessional setting, teamwork, relationships among the teamwork members, consequences for the patient, and consequences for the future. The results indicate that there is a high degree of learning potential in interprofessional workplace activity in primary care. This kind of learning strategy is an important supplement to traditional training within all health professions

    The Relative Effect of Team-Based Learning on Motivation and Learning: A Self-Determination Theory Perspective

    We investigate the effects of team-based learning (TBL) on motivation and learning in a quasi-experimental study. The study employs a self-determination theory perspective to investigate the motivational effects of implementing TBL in a physiotherapy course in higher education. We adopted a one-group pretest–posttest design. The results show that the students’ intrinsic motivation, identified regulation, perceived competence, and perceived autonomy support significantly increased going from lectures to TBL. The results further show that students’ engagement and perceived learning significantly increased. Finally, students’ amotivation decreased from pretest to posttest; however, students reported higher external regulation as a function of TBL. Path analysis shows that increases in intrinsic motivation, perceived competence, and external regulation positively predict increases in engagement, which in turn predict increases in perceived learning. We argue that the characteristics of TBL, as opposed to lectures, are likely to engage students and facilitate feelings of competence. TBL is an active-learning approach, as opposed to more passive learning in lectures, which might explain the increase in students’ perception of teachers as autonomy supportive. In contrast, the greater demands TBL puts on students might account for the increase in external regulation. Limitations and practical implications of the results are discussed
