Control of apple scab by curative applications of biocontrol agents

    Get PDF
In organic apple growing protective applications with copper, sulphur or lime sulphur are used for apple scab control. Protective applications have to be repeated when new leaves unfold. The timing of protective sprays depends on the weather forecast. If forecasted infection conditions fail to appear, treatments were for nothing. With curative control agents available, the number of treatments could be reduced. In greenhouse trials we tested control agents for their protective and curative efficiency against apple scab after artificial inoculation of potted apple trees. Applications were done 2 hours before inoculation, 5 hours after inoculation on wet leaves, 5 hours after inoculation during simulated rainfall or 24 hours after inoculation on wet or dry leaves. The optimal time of application differed between the preparations tested. Vitisan and OmniProtect had their highest activity when sprayed curative 24 hours after inoculation. Combinations were found, which revealed a high efficiency against apple scab from 2h before to 24 hours after inoculation. In a field trial apple scab was effectively controlled by curative applications of OmniProtect

Challenges and solutions for Latin named entity recognition

    Get PDF
Although spanning thousands of years and genres as diverse as liturgy, historiography, lyric and other forms of prose and poetry, the body of Latin texts is still relatively sparse compared to English. Data sparsity in Latin presents a number of challenges for traditional Named Entity Recognition techniques. Solving such challenges and enabling reliable Named Entity Recognition in Latin texts can facilitate many down-stream applications, from machine translation to digital historiography, enabling Classicists, historians, and archaeologists for instance, to track the relationships of historical persons, places, and groups on a large scale. This paper presents the first annotated corpus for evaluating Named Entity Recognition in Latin, as well as a fully supervised model that achieves over 90% F-score on a held-out test set, significantly outperforming a competitive baseline. We also present a novel active learning strategy that predicts how many and which sentences need to be annotated for named entities in order to attain a specified degree of accuracy when recognizing named entities automatically in a given text. This maximizes the productivity of annotators while simultaneously controlling quality

Improved chlorate candle provides concentrated oxygen source

    Get PDF
Improved chlorate candle is used as a solid, portable source of oxygen in emergency situations. It contains sodium chlorate, iron, barium peroxide, and glass mixed in powdered form. The oxygen evolves from the decomposition of the sodium chlorate when an ignition pellet is electrically initiated

Electron-hole correlation effects in the emission of light from quantum wires

We present a self-consistent treatment of the electron-hole correlations in optically excited quantum wires within the ladder approximation, and using a contact potential interaction. The limitations of the ladder approximation to the excitonic low-density region are largely overcome by the introduction of higher order correlations through self consistency. We show relevance of these correlations in the low-temperature emission, even for high density relevant in lasing, when large gain replaces excitonic absorption.Comment: 4 paes 3 figure

A New Distribution-Random Limit Normal Distribution

This paper introduces a new distribution to improve tail risk modeling. Based on the classical normal distribution, we define a new distribution by a series of heat equations. Then, we use market data to verify our model

THE ANALISIS OF THE BET-FI INDEX’S STATIC PROPERTIES

    Get PDF
The financial sector of the Bucharest Stock Exchange, reflected in the BET-FI index, has gone through important changes during the last few years, becoming very attractive for the individual and institutional investors. This paper’s aim is to offer an analysis of the static proprieties of the BET-FI index and of the way the financial sector positioned in respect to the other sectors, as well as to the whole financial Romanian market. This will be done by a co-integration between the BET-FI index and the others indexes of the market (namely BET and BET-C).BET-FI index, distribution, informational efficiency

A Preliminary Analysis on the Long run Relationship between Taxation and Growth in Turkey

    Get PDF
Although higher taxation may lead to a fall in growth rates through distortion of decisions to invest and save, certain tax policies of the government may also enhance economic growth when government investments aiming at improving the infrastructure induces private investment. This study aims to explore the effects of taxation on growth in Turkey during the period of 1975-2004, by the use of time series analysis. In addition to total taxation, direct and indirect taxes are considered separately (income tax, goods and services tax and foreign trade tax). Engle-Granger two-step cointegration results show that as total taxation/GDP ratio and trade taxation/GDP ratio increase, growth rate decreases. There is no evidence of a long run relationship between goods and services tax/GDP ratio and growth. As for the nondistortionary income taxation, the relationship is in the reverse direction: as growth rate increases, income tax/GDP ratio increases.
