Nanoscale Torsional Optomechanics
Optomechanical transduction is demonstrated for nanoscale torsional
resonators evanescently coupled to optical microdisk whispering gallery mode
resonators. The on-chip, integrated devices are measured using a fully
fiber-based system, including a tapered and dimpled optical fiber probe. With a
thermomechanically calibrated optomechanical noise floor down to 7 fm/sqrt(Hz),
these devices open the door for a wide range of physical measurements involving
extremely small torques, as little as 4x10^-20 N*m.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures - Accepted to APL Oct 22nd, 2012. To appear in

Multiplicity fluctuations in relativistic nuclear collisions
Multiplicity distributions of hadrons produced in central nucleus-nucleus
collisions are studied within the hadron-resonance gas model in the large
volume limit. In the canonical ensemble conservation of three charges (baryon
number, electric charge, and strangeness) is enforced. In addition, in the
micro-canonical ensemble energy conservation is included. An analytical method
is used to account for resonance decays. Multiplicity distributions and scaled
variances for negatively charged hadrons are presented along the chemical
freeze-out line of central Pb+Pb (Au+Au) collisions from SIS to LHC energies.
Predictions obtained within different statistical ensembles are compared with
preliminary NA49 experimental results on central Pb+Pb collisions in the SPS
energy range. The measured fluctuations are significantly narrower than a
Poisson reference distribution, and clearly favor expectations for the
micro-canonical ensemble.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
Phase Changes in Ni-Ti Under Laser Shock Loading
Near-equiatomic Ni-Ti, known for its shape memory behavior, can decompose to martensitic phases and/or second phase compounds. This phase competition is investigated in NixTi100-x (494Ti3 but no martensite in the AQ state, consistent with resistivity and dilatometry results which showed no hysteresis indicative of first order phase changes over 1.9 K4Ti3 amounts (present in the AQ state) did change upon loading, indicating the importance of shock-induced heating. A thermodynamically complete equation of state (EOS) for NiTi in its B2 (CsCl) structure was generated by ab initio quantum mechanical calculations. This was tested by performing laser-launched flyer experiments, which showed consistency with the theoretical EOS, validating its use in the prediction of dynamic loading histories in the samples during direct drive loading

Local models for intersecting brane worlds
We describe the construction of configurations of D6-branes wrapped on
compact 3-cycles intersecting at points in non-compact Calabi-Yau threefolds.
Such constructions provide local models of intersecting brane worlds, and
describe sectors of four-dimensional gauge theories with chiral fermions. We
present several classes of non-compact manifolds with compact 3-cycles
intersecting at points, and discuss the rules required for model building with
wrapped D6-branes. The rules to build 3-cycles are simple, and allow easy
computation of chiral spectra, RR tadpoles and the amount of preserved
supersymmetry. We present several explicit examples of these constructions,
some of which have Standard Model like gauge group and three quark-lepton
generations. In some cases, mirror symmetry relates the models to other
constructions used in phenomenological D-brane model building, like D-branes at
singularities. Some simple N=1 supersymmetric configurations may lead to
relatively tractable G_2 manifolds upon lift to M-theory, which would be
non-compact but nevertheless yield four-dimensional chiral gauge field
theories.Comment: 52 pages, latex, 24 enclosed eps figures; v2. typo correcte

System Size, Energy, Pseudorapidity, and Centrality Dependence of Elliptic Flow
This paper presents measurements of the elliptic flow of charged particles as
a function of pseudorapidity and centrality from Cu-Cu collisions at 62.4 and
200 GeV using the PHOBOS detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider
(RHIC). The elliptic flow in Cu-Cu collisions is found to be significant even
for the most central events. For comparison with the Au-Au results, it is found
that the detailed way in which the collision geometry (eccentricity) is
estimated is of critical importance when scaling out system-size effects. A new
form of eccentricity, called the participant eccentricity, is introduced which
yields a scaled elliptic flow in the Cu-Cu system that has the same relative
magnitude and qualitative features as that in the Au-Au system
Latest Results from PHOBOS
This manuscript contains a summary of the latest physics results from PHOBOS,
as reported at Quark Matter 2006. Highlights include the first measurement from
PHOBOS of dynamical elliptic flow fluctuations as well as an explanation of
their possible origin, two-particle correlations, identified particle ratios,
identified particle spectra and the latest results in global charged particle
production.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, PHOBOS plenary proceedings for Quark Matter 200
System size, energy, centrality and pseudorapidity dependence of charged-particle density in Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at RHIC
Charged particle pseudorapidity distributions are presented from the PHOBOS
experiment at RHIC, measured in Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at sqrt{s_NN}=19.6,
22.4, 62.4, 130 and 200 GeV, as a function of collision centrality. The
presentation includes the recently analyzed Cu+Cu data at 22.4 GeV. The
measurements were made by the same detector setup over a broad range in
pseudorapidity, |eta|<5.4, allowing for a reliable systematic study of particle
production as a function of energy, centrality and system size. Comparing Cu+Cu
and Au+Au results, we find that the total number of produced charged particles
and the overall shape (height and width) of the pseudorapidity distributions
are determined by the number of nucleon participants, N_part. Detailed
comparisons reveal that the matching of the shape of the Cu+Cu and Au+Au
pseudorapidity distributions over the full range of eta is better for the same
N_part/2A value than for the same N_part value, where A denotes the mass
number. In other words, it is the geometry of the nuclear overlap zone, rather
than just the number of nucleon participants that drives the detailed shape of
the pseudorapidity distribution and its centrality dependence.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. Presented at the 20th International Conference on
