    Universality of prisoners’ right and appraisal of the level of conformity in Nigeria

    This paper examines the concept of human right as well as the universality in the application of the concept to the prisoners’ welfare in most countries of the world. To determine the level of conformity of this concept in Nigeria, the paper discusses the post-conviction problems prisoners face in Nigeria as against what is obtainable in some other countries of the globe. In the final analysis, the paper posits that, due to unrealistic nature of prisoner’s right enforcement in Nigeria, the situation is an aberration to the best global practices. To check the situation, the paper made some practical recommendations that could make the issue of prisoner rights conform to that which is obtainable in most civilised countries of the world.Keywords: Prisoners’ Right, Conformity, Aberration, Universality of Human Right

    Pathogenicity of three genetically distinct and highly pathogenic Egyptian H5N8 avian influenza viruses in chickens

    In late 2016, Egypt encountered multiple cases of the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus of the H5N8 subtype. In a previous study, three distinct genotypes, including A/common-coot/Egypt/CA285/2016 (H5N8) (CA285), A/duck/Egypt/SS19/2017 (H5N8) (SS19), and A/duck/Egypt/F446/2017 (H5N8) (F446), were isolated from wild birds, a backyard, and a commercial farm, respectively, during the first wave of infection. In this current study, we investigated the differences in the pathogenicity, replication and transmissibility of the three genotypes and A/chicken/Egypt/15S75/2015 (H5N1) (S75) was used as the control. The intravenous pathogenicity index was between 2.68 and 2.9. The chicken lethal dose 50 values of F446, SS19 and CA285 were 103.7, 103.7, an 104 with a natural route of infection, respectively. These strains took longer than S75 to cause death when infection was carried out through the natural route (HPAI H5N1). After inoculation with the original concentration of 105 and 106 egg infective dose 50 (EID50), F446 had a higher mortality rate with short mean death times of 4, and 7 days, respectively compared with the other H5N8 viruses. Chickens inoculated with F446 and contacted exposed chickens infected with F446 showed the highest viral titer with remarkable differences in all H5N8 tested swabs at 2-4 days postinfection (dpi) compared to S75 at 2 dpi. This indicates that F446 had a more efficient transmission and spread from contact exposed birds to other birds. All H5N8 viruses were able to replicate systematically in all organs (trachea, brain, lung, and spleen) of the chicken with high viral titer with significantly different and more pathological changes observed in F446 than in other H5N8 viruses at 2 and 4 dpi. Compared with H5N1, we recorded a significantly high viral titer in the samples obtained from the lung, brain and both cloacal and tracheal swabs at 2 and 4 dpi, respectively and in the samples obtained from the spleen at 2 and 4 dpi among the experimental chicken. The comparative pathogenesis study revealed that in comparison with the other HPAI H5N8 viruses, the genotype F446 was more pathogenic, and showed more efficient viral replication and transmissibility in chickens in Egypt. The genotype F446 also showed a high viral titer than HPAI H5N1 and short mean death time at the third day after inoculation with 106 and 105 EID50, which revealed a conservation of certain H5N8 genotypes and a decrease in the incidence of H5N1

    Objective - The highly concentrated ownership structure, lack of quality information, and weak regulatory environments caused imbalances in the movement of cash flows and thereby put the liquidity levels of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) banks on a downward trend. This prompted policymakers in the GCC region to modify their Corporate Governance (C.G.) codes to boost the financial position of the GCC banking industry as liquidity providers and minimize systemic risk. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to conceptually investigate the relationship between board governance attributes and liquidity creation in the GCC banking sector. Methodology – The methodology employed in this study is a review of prior research on bank governance mechanisms and liquidity creation to gather perspective and establish a prediction about the association between board attributes and liquidity creation in the GCC banking industry. Findings – The study concludes that there is a positive correlation between the analyzed board governance features and the creation of liquidity based on several theories gleaned from a review of prior research.     The impact of omega-3 fatty acids on the evolution of acinetobacter baumannii drug resistance

    Published 17 November 2021The bacterial pathogen Acinetobacter baumannii has emerged as an urgent threat to health care systems. The prevalence of multidrug resistance in this critical human pathogen is closely associated with difficulties in its eradication from the hospital environment and its recalcitrance to treatment during infection. The development of resistance in A. baumannii is in part due to substantial plasticity of its genome, facilitating spontaneous genomic evolution. Many studies have investigated selective pressures imposed by antibiotics on genomic evolution, but the influence of high-abundance bioactive molecules at the host-pathogen interface on mutation and rates of evolution is poorly understood. Here, we studied the roles of host fatty acids in the gain in resistance to common antibiotics. We defined the impact of the polyunsaturated fatty acids arachidonic acid and docosahexaenoic acid on the development of resistance to erythromycin in A. baumannii strain AB5075_UW using a microevolutionary approach. We employed whole-genome sequencing and various phenotypic analyses to characterize microbe-lipid-antibiotic interactions. Cells exposed to erythromycin in the presence of the fatty acids displayed significantly lower rates of development of resistance to erythromycin and, importantly, tetracycline. Subsequent analyses defined diverse means by which host fatty acids influence the mutation rates. This work has highlighted the critical need to consider the roles of host fatty acids in A. baumannii physiology and antimicrobial resistance. Collectively, we have identified a novel means to curb the development of resistance in this critical human pathogen. IMPORTANCE The global distribution of multidrug resistance in A. baumannii has necessitated seeking not only alternative therapeutic approaches but also the means to limit the development of resistance in clinical settings. Highly abundant host bioactive compounds, such as polyunsaturated fatty acids, are readily acquired by A. baumannii during infection and have been illustrated to impact the bacterium's membrane composition and antibiotic resistance. In this work, we show that in vitro supplementation with host polyunsaturated fatty acids reduces the rate at which A. baumannii gains resistance to erythromycin and tetracycline. Furthermore, we discover that the impact on resistance development is closely associated with the primary antimicrobial efflux systems of A. baumannii, which represent one of the major drivers of clinical resistance. Overall, this study emphasizes the potential of host macromolecules in novel approaches to circumvent the difficulties of multidrug resistance during A. baumannii treatment, with fatty acid supplements such as fish oil providing safe and cost-effective ways to enhance host tolerance to bacterial infections.Maoge Zang, Felise G.     A consortium of Rhizosphere-Competent actinobacteria exhibiting multiple plant Growth-Promoting traits improves the growth of Avicennia marina in the United Arab Emirates

    Gray mangrove (Avicennia marina) is the dominant vegetation distributed along the coast of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Despite its performance as natural coastal guardians, very little is known about the reforestation projects to increase mangrove cover over the years in the UAE and in the Arabian Gulf. Plant growth-promoting actinobacteria (PGPA) were isolated from the mangrove rhizosphere sediments found in the UAE and were evaluated for their potential to produce plant growth regulators (PGRs) and to enhance mangrove growth under seawater irrigation conditions. In vitro screening identified nine rhizosphere-competent actinobacterial isolates, in a naturally competitive environment, of which Streptomyces coelicoflavus (Sc) showed a high phosphorus solubilizing activity. Moreover, Streptomyces polychromogenes (Sp), Streptomyces bacillaris (Sb), and Streptomyces ferrugineus (Sf) produced auxins, polyamines (PAs), and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) deaminase, respectively. Although sediment inoculation with single isolates significantly improved the dry biomass of mangrove shoots (43.2–74.0%) and roots (40.8–75.9%), the consortium of isolates (Sc/Sp/Sb/Sf) caused a greater increase in the dry weight of shoots (82.1%) and roots (81.6%) compared with seawater-irrigated plants (control). In our greenhouse experiments, the levels of photosynthetic pigments, in planta auxins, and PAs significantly increased in plant tissues inoculated with Sc/Sp/Sb/Sf; whereas ACC contents were reduced. This was also evident as the maximum velocity of rubisco carboxylation (Vcmax) increased four-fold in plants treated with the mixture of isolates over control. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study reporting culturable halotolerant, rhizosphere-competent PGPA inhabiting salty and arid ecosystems applied individually or in combination to promote mangrove growth under harsh conditions such as those found in the Arabian coastal areas

    Solving the Graceful Exit Problem in Superstring Cosmology

    We briefly review the status of the ``graceful exit'' problem in superstring cosmology and present a possible resolution. It is shown that there exists a solution to this problem in two-dimensional dilaton gravity provided quantum corrections are incorporated. This is similar to the recently proposed solution of Rey. However, unlike in his case, in our one-loop corrected model the graceful exit problem is solved for any finite number of massless scalar matter fields present in the theory.Comment: 8 pages, RevTex.     Curvaton and the inhomogeneous end of inflation

    We study the primordial density perturbations and non-Gaussianities generated from the combined effects of an inhomogeneous end of inflation and curvaton decay in hybrid inflation. This dual role is played by a single isocurvature field which is massless during inflation but acquire a mass at the end of inflation via the waterfall phase transition. We calculate the resulting primordial non-Gaussianity characterized by the non-linearity parameter, fNLf_{NL}, recovering the usual end-of-inflation result when the field decays promptly and the usual curvaton result if the field decays sufficiently late.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figure

          The plants of mustard (Brassica juncea L. Czern and Coss; cultivar Alankar) were treated with 200 µL/L ethrel (2-chloro ethyl phosphonic acid) at flowering stage (60 d after sowing) along with basal application of nitrogen 40, 60, and 80 kg N ha-1. Effect of ethrel and nitrogen on leaf area index (LAI), net photosynthetic rate (PN), nitrate reductase (NR) activity and plant dry mass were recorded at 80 and 100 d after sowing. At harvest pods plant-1, 1000 seed mass and seed yield were recorded. Ethrel 200 µL/L x 80 kg N ha-1 treatment enhanced all the characteristics studied during the experiment

    A Charged Rotating Black Ring

    We construct a supergravity solution describing a charged rotating black ring with S^2xS^1 horizon in a five dimensional asymptotically flat spacetime. In the neutral limit the solution is the rotating black ring recently found by Emparan and Reall. We determine the exact value of the lower bound on J^2/M^3, where J is the angular momentum and M the mass; the black ring saturating this bound has maximum entropy for the given mass. The charged black ring is characterized by mass M, angular momentum J, and electric charge Q, and it also carries local fundamental string charge. The electric charge distributed uniformly along the ring helps support the ring against its gravitational self-attraction, so that J^2/M^3 can be made arbitrarily small while Q/M remains finite.     The relationship among avian influenza, gut microbiota and chicken immunity: An updated overview

    The alimentary tract in chickens plays a crucial role in immune cell formation and immune challenges, which regulate intestinal flora and sustain extra-intestinal immunity. The interaction between pathogenic microorganisms and the host commensal microbiota as well as the variety and integrity of gut microbiota play a vital role in health and disease conditions. Thus, several studies have highlighted the importance of gut microbiota in developing immunity against viral infections in chickens. The gut microbiota (such as different species of Lactobacillus, Blautia Bifidobacterium, Faecalibacterium, Clostridium XlVa, and members of firmicutes) encounters different pathogens through different mechanisms. The digestive tract is a highly reactive environment, and infectious microorganisms can disturb its homeostasis, resulting in dysbiosis and mucosal infections. Avian influenza viruses (AIV) are highly infectious zoonotic viruses that lead to severe economic losses and pose a threat to the poultry industry worldwide. AIV is a challenging virus that affects gut integrity, disrupts microbial homeostasis and induces inflammatory damage in the intestinal mucosa. H9N2 AIV infection elevates the expression of proinflammatory cytokines, such as interferon (IFN-γ and IFNα) and interleukins (IL-17A and IL-22), and increases the proliferation of members of proteobacteria, particularly Escherichia coli. On the contrary, it decreases the proliferation of certain beneficial bacteria, such as Enterococcus, Lactobacillus and other probiotic microorganisms. In addition, H9N2 AIV decreases the expression of primary gel-forming mucin, endogenous trefoil factor family peptides and tight junction proteins (ZO-1, claudin 3, and occludin), resulting in severe intestinal damage.
