    SESAME, a third generation synchrotron light source for the Middle East region

    Developed under the auspices of UNESCO, SESAME is being established as an autonomous international research centre in the Middle East/Mediterranean region. It will have as its centrepiece a 2.5 GeV third Generation synchrotron light source with 13 straight sections for insertion devices and an emittance of 26.6 nm-rad. It will provide intense radiation from the IR to hard X-rays to a community that is expected to exceed 1000 users a few years after the start of operation in 2008

    Microrheological Characterisation of Anisotropic Materials

    We describe the measurement of anisotropic viscoelastic moduli in complex soft materials, such as biopolymer gels, via video particle tracking microrheology of colloid tracer particles. The use of a correlation tensor to find the axes of maximum anisotropy, and hence the mechanical director, is described. The moduli of an aligned DNA gel are reported, as a test of the technique; this may have implications for high DNA concentrations in vivo. We also discuss the errors in microrheological measurement, and describe the use of frequency space filtering to improve displacement resolution, and hence probe these typically high modulus materials.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures.     An audit of head trauma care and mortality

    Objective: To analyze the factors contributing to deaths from head trauma by using standardized assessment parameters and to provide a peer-review of head injury deaths with focus on identifying deficiencies and analyzing contributory factors.Design: Descriptive study.Place and duration of study: The study was carried out at the Emergency, Aga Khan University Hospital during January 1998 to December 1999.Subjects and method: One hundred and three patients above the age of 15 years presenting alive to the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) emergency with head injury were included in this study. Identified deaths data was reviewed by the Hospital Trauma Peer Review Committee and consensus arrived at for categorization of deaths. The potential deficiencies in care were identified and final recommendations made. The data was computed on CDC Trauma Registry (V 3.0) and SPSS (V 8.0).Results: Mean age was 31.9 years (n=103) with predominant male population (4:1). Severe head injury (GCS\u3c8) accounted for 21.3 % (n=22) of all cases with a total number of deaths being 12.6 % (n=13). Deaths were categorized preventable in 3 cases with non-preventable and potentially preventable in 4 and 6 cases respectively. Road traffic accidents were the predominant mechanism (n=8) in all deaths (n=13). The time interval in relation to mortality was biphasic, most deaths occurring either within 24 hours or between 3-7 days of injury. Inappropriate pre-hospital treatment, pre-hospital delays and inappropriate mode of transportation without inter-hospital communication were the process-related defects in pre-hospital care with major determinant of deaths outside AKUH (n=5). Prolonged emergency stay, delayed intensive care availability were the process-related deficiencies whereas inappropriate initial resuscitation, inappropriate initial head injury management were provider-related deficiencies in in-hospital care.Conclusion: Transfer of inappropriately managed patients, lapses in inter-hospital communications, delayed transfers were identified as the major pre-hospital factors whereas lack of ICU beds, portable ventilators in emergency room, delays in CT scan facilities were the deficiencies in the hospital services. Opportunities for improvement in head trauma care are needed to focus on initial resuscitation and appropriate surgical management

    Wavelength-selectable laser emission from a multistripe array grating integrated cavity laser

    We report laser operation of a multistripe array grating integrated cavity (MAGIC) laser in which the wavelength of the emission from a single output stripe is chosen by selectively injection pumping a second stripe. We demonstrate a device that lases in the 1.5 µm fiber band at 15 wavelengths, evenly spaced by ~2 nm. The single-output/wavelength-selectable operation, together with the accurate predefinition of the lasing wavelengths, makes the MAGIC laser a very attractive candidate for use in multiwavelength networks

    DETERMINATION OF DIVERSE ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION LEVEL FROM SELECTED AREAS OF RAWALPINDI, PAKISTAN

    Anthropogenic contaminants arising from both stationary (power plants, industries and residential heating) and mobile sources (road traffic) can harm ambient air quality in urban areas. Depending upon their physical state, these pollutants are classified as liquid and vapor phases and are subsequently transported to the Earth’s surface through dry and wet deposition. After the deposition of these pollutants onto the surface of earth various health effects caused by these pollutants occurred like cardiovascular diseases and hypertension. In this study four different locations/sites were selected from the Rawalpindi city depending upon the population, traffic rush and industries to examine the noise level, concentration of carbon dioxide and heavy metals. Air sampler was used for the collection of air sample to analyze the heavy metal concentration, Quest electronic sound meter for measuring sound level and SIBATA for CO2 measurement. The study findings revealed that noise level was higher at all selected locations as described by WHO limit (70 dB) being highest at Industrial area due to heavy machinery and lowest at green area. Concentration of all four heavy metals were high as compared with the prescribed limits. CO2 level reaches up to 300 ppm because of coal consumption during the winter season. The threshold values of all these selected parameters well above the prescribed limits defined by the authorities so to combat with this situation we should move towards more energy efficient fuels, proper maintenance of vehicles and machineries, traffic management and installation of noise barriers in industries as well as installation of catalytic convertors in vehicles to stop further air pollution

    IL-22 mediates goblet cell hyperplasia and worm expulsion in intestinal helminth infection.

    Type 2 immune responses are essential in protection against intestinal helminth infections. In this study we show that IL-22, a cytokine important in defence against bacterial infections in the intestinal tract, is also a critical mediator of anti-helminth immunity. After infection with Nippostrongylus brasiliensis, a rodent hookworm, IL-22-deficient mice showed impaired worm expulsion despite normal levels of type 2 cytokine production. The impaired worm expulsion correlated with reduced goblet cell hyperplasia and reduced expression of goblet cell markers. We further confirmed our findings in a second nematode model, the murine whipworm Trichuris muris. T.muris infected IL-22-deficient mice had a similar phenotype to that seen in N.brasiliensis infection, with impaired worm expulsion and reduced goblet cell hyperplasia. Ex vivo and in vitro analysis demonstrated that IL-22 is able to directly induce the expression of several goblet cell markers, including mucins. Taken together, our findings reveal that IL-22 plays an important role in goblet cell activation, and thus, a key role in anti-helminth immunity
