    THE INTEGRATION OF WEB-BASED LEARNING MEDIA INTO ELT: USING WEBQUEST TO ENHANCE STUDENTS’ WRITING ACHIEVEMENT

    In recent decades, the integration of web-based learning media into English Language Teaching (ELT) has become an ideal choice for the educators to support students’ success in learning English. This research presents the use of a web-based learning medium (Webquest) to enhance students’ writing achievement. It involved sixty-two of eleventh grade students which divided into two groups; experimental and control groups. The researchers applied Webquest in experimental class to investigate whether the integration of Webquest into teaching and learning activities was effective or not to improve students’ writing achievement. To collect the data, writing test in form of essaywas administered to both groups. The data were analyzed by using independent and pair t-tests. The results revealed that the experimental group students’ writing achievement outperformed the control group students’ writing achievement. In a nutshell, it is believed that Webquest is an effective learning tool to improve students’ writing achievement

    Considering the implementation of ASEAN Economic Community and Asian Games 2018, potential hotels are urged to prepare qualified and competitive human resource. Language is believed as a means of communication among people involved in these international events. People around the world would stay at certain hotel, and English communication competence might relate the hotel guests and the employees as service provider agent. This study aims to excavate the role of English communication competence toward employees’ working achievement. About three hundred and fifty-three employes from forty-four different star hotels in Palembang were involved as the sample. The data was collected by administering two kinds of instruments, namely speaking test (to obtain the condition of their communication competence) and questionnaires concerning superior’s judgement on employees’ working achievement. The results were obtained through the descriptive, percentage, and statistical analysis which was aimed to find out the significant influence of English communication competence toward employee achievement. The findings showed that there was positive influence of English communication competence toward employees’ achievement

    A Study of Freshmen’s Autonomy In Learning and Their English Proficiency

    The shift of teacher-centered to students-centered in English language teaching demands learners to be capable to do a learning method transformation of being dependent into independent. In EFL classroom context, autonomy is viewed as a substantial behavior to conform the demand and achieve the assigned language learning outcomes. In a matter of fact, learners’ English proficiency should be considered to make sure that the concept of independent learning might be well-executed. This study aims to find out a correlation between freshmen’s autonomy in learning and their English proficiency. Two hundred and one students of 2018/2019 batch were be involved as the sample of this study. They were selected by using proportionate sampling method. Questionnaire was used to collect the data. The results were obtained through the descriptive and statistical analysis, which aimed to find out the correlation between learner autonomy and English proficiency.     THE CORRELATION BETWEEN DIGITAL LITERACY AND ENGLISH PROFICIENCY OF UNIKA MUSI CHARITAS FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS

    This study aimed to discover the correlation between digital literacy and English proficiency of first-year students at Unika Musi Charitas. One hundred seventy three students were involved by using purposive sampling technique. The data were collected by using questionnaire which elaborates students’ digital literacy as well as the score of their English proficiency. To analyze the results, Pearson Product Moment formula was used to measure the relationship between the two discussed variables. Findings were described into the results of participants’ English proficiency level, digital literacy insight as well as the correlation test. Viewing from the proficiency level, 64.2% of the participants were categorized as basic users which can perform limited language use on daily topics. In addition, the mean score of their digital literacy insight was 66.99 with the maximum and minimum scores were 100 and 10 descriptively. The correlation test obtained significant correlation between digital literacy and English proficiency with Pearson correlation value of 0.394 at significance level of 0.000. This strongly confirms that the ability of using digital things and language carry positive intercourse.Keywords: Digital literacy, English proficienc

The data is collected by administering three kinds of instrument, namely speaking test (to obtain the condition of their communication competence), questionnaire concerning the employees’ perception toward their speaking motivation and questionnaire concerning the superior judgement on their employees’ working performance. The results were obtained through the descriptive, percentage, and statistical analysis which is aimed to find out the significant influence of English communication competence and speaking motivation toward employee performance.     Students’ Speaking Anxiety on their Speaking Performance: A Study of EFL Learners

    In the new era of industrial revolution 4.0, it demands that people should enhance their communication competence to interact globally. The ability to speak a foreign language is prominently influenced by one of the problems, namely speaking anxiety. This language production barrier affects various aspects of oral communication. This study aimed at finding out the impact of speaking anxiety on freshmen’s speaking performance. There were seventy eight freshmen of the 2018/2019 batch involved as the participants of this study. The data were collected by using a Personal Report of Public Speaking Anxiety (PRPSA) questionnaire as well as students’ speaking performance, which was evaluated by using a speaking rubric. Pearson Product Moment formula was used to analyze the correlation between the two variables. It was found out that speaking anxiety was correlated to the speaking performance. Fear and nervousness produced by speaking anxiety would affect oral language performance

    The Influence of Language Laboratory In Empowering Students’ Listening Comprehension Skill And Speaking Performance

    Considering the needs of preparing students toward the issue of Asian Economic Community, it is necessary for each educational place to produce qualified and competitive human resources. Language is believed as a means of communication among this upcoming international trade system. In this technological era, language laboratory has become thicker on the ground. It is also installed in our university where English is taught in ESP courses. Through this study, it is strongly believed that language laboratory would provide beneficial impact to empower students’ listening comprehension skill and speaking performance. Fifty university students of non-English major were selected and distributed equally to both control and experimental group. All students in the experimental group were taught in the language laboratory but those in the control group studied in the classroom. The data were collected by assessing students’ listening and speaking achievement as well as administering questionnaire. The results were obtained through the statistical analysis which aims to find out the significant influence of language laboratory toward students’ listening and speaking achievement.     Portrait of EFL Learners' Writings: Errors, Challenges, and Solutions

    As one of the most challenging English skill, writing plays important role in supporting students’ academic success. It therefore has become a major concern of researchers around the globe to conduct studies dealing with writing related issues. This descriptive study aimed to analyze EFL learners’ writings. In particular, it focused on portraying the most dominant grammatical and lexical errors in the students’ writings. In line with it, it also explored challenges and solutions of writing on the basis of students’ perspectives. Thirty sophomores were involved as participants of this study. The data were collected through writing test, questionnaire, and interview. Collecting, identifying, classifying, and describing were modified data analysis stages used in this study. The result of data analysis revealed that there were 445 grammatical errors and 111 lexical errors found in students’ writing. In details, the grammatical errors covered fragment omissions (35%), incorrect mechanics (31%), tense misuse (23%), wrong fragments (5%), fragment additions (4%), and inappropriate pair (2%). Meanwhile, the lexical errors comprised inappropriate choices (27%), redundancies (24%), incorrect forms (22%), misspellings (14%), improper uses (8%), and wrong orders (5%). Furthermore, limited knowledge on grammar and vocabulary, lack of practice and motivation, and insufficient writing skills were among the most common challenges faced by the students during writing process. In addition, the students believed that review and feedback, various material, assignment and practice exposure, and the use of supporting techno based tools were among highly recommended alternative solutions to anticipate the errors and challenges

    Dalam konteks sederhana, literasi dimaknai sebagai kemampuan yang dimiliki seseorang dalam membaca dan menulis. Penguasaan literasi yang baik adalah faktor penting yang dapat menunjang kesuksesan generasi muda untuk mencapai kesuksesan baik dalam pendidikan maupun pekerjaan. Melalui kegiatan “Mari Gemar Membaca”, tim pengabdian UKMC ingin turut berpartisipasi dalam mewujudkan penguasaan literasi yang baik bagi generasi muda. Kegiatan ini diharapkan dapat menumbuhkan minat membaca dan membangun budaya gemar membaca khusunya bagi para siswa/siswi SMA dan SMK Methodist 2 Palembang. Tingginya minat membaca disertai dengan maraknya budaya gemar membaca tentunya akan mendukung penguasaan literasi yang baik. Penguasaan literasi yang baik ini diharapkan dapat menjadi bekal bagi siswa guna menjawab tantangan era teknologi yang menuntut tersedianya sumber daya manusia yang berkualitas dan kompetitif serta membangun kesadaran siswa agar lebih bijak dalam memanfaatkan teknologi sebagai sarana penyedia informasi dan pengetahuan
