Diffuse sclerosing variant of thyroid carcinoma presenting as Hashimoto thyroiditis: a case report [Difuzno sklerozirajući oblik papilarnog karcinoma štitnjače nalik Hashimoto tireoiditisu: prikaz slučaja]

The aim of report is to present a case of a rare diffuse sclerosing variant of a papillary thyroid carcinoma. A 15-year old girl referred for ultrasound examination because of painless thyroid swelling lasting 10 days before. An ultrasound of the neck showed diffusely changed thyroid parenchyma, without nodes, looking as lymphocytic thyroiditis Hashimoto at first, but with snow-storm appearance, predominantly in the right lobe. Positive thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPO-AT) also suggested Hashimoto thyroiditis. Repeated US-FNAB (fine needle-aspiration biopsy) of the right lobe revealed diffuse sclerosing variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma and patient underwent total thyreoidectomy. Patohistologic finding confirmed diffuse sclerosing variant of a papillary thyroid carcinoma in the both thyroid lobes and several metastatic lymph nodes. Two months later patient recived radioablative therapy with 3700 MBq (100 mCi) of 1-131 followed by levothyroxine replacement. At the moment, patient is without evidence of local or distant metastases and next regular control is scheduled in 6 months. In conclusion, a diffuse sclerosing variant is rare form of papillary thyroid carcinoma that echographically looks similar to Hashimoto thyroiditis and sometimes could be easily overlooked

A temperature and magnetic field dependence Mössbauer study of ɛ-Fe2O3

ɛ-Fe2O3 was synthesized as nanoparticles by a pre-vacuum heat treatment of yttrium iron garnet (Y3Fe5O12) in a silica matrix at 300-C followed by sintering in air at 1,000-C for up to 10 h. It displays complex magnetic properties that are characterized by two transitions, one at 480 K from a paramagnet (P) to canted antiferromagnet (CAF1) and the second at ca. 120 K from the canted antiferromagnet (CAF1) to another canted antiferromagnet (CAF2). CAF2 has a smaller resultant magnetic moment (i.e. smaller canting angle) than CAF1. Analysis of the zero-field Mossbauer spectra at different temperatures shows an associated discontinuity of the hyperfine field around 120 K. In an applied field, the different magnetic sublattices were identified and the directions of their moments were assigned. The moments of the two sublattices are antiparallel and collinear at 160 K but are at right angle to each other at 4.2 K

New results on the limit for the width of the exotic Theta^+ resonance

We investigate the impact of the \Theta^+(1540) resonance on differential and integrated cross sections for the reaction K^+d{\to}K^0pp, where experimental information is available at kaon momenta below 640 MeV/c. The calculation utilizes the J\"ulich KN model and extensions of it that include contributions from a \Theta^+(1540) state with different widths. The evaluation of the reaction K^+d{\to}K^0pp takes into account effects due to the Fermi motion of the nucleons within the deuteron and the final three-body kinematics. We conclude that the available data constrain the width of the \Theta^+(1540) to be less than 1 MeV.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, updated version, accepted for publication in Phys. Lett.

Moving NRQCD for B Form Factors at High Recoil

    Get PDF
We derive the continuum and lattice tree-level moving NRQCD (mNRQCD) through order 1/m^2. mNRQCD is a generalization of NRQCD for dealing with hadrons with nonzero velocity u_mu. The quark's total momentum is written as P^mu=Mu^mu+k^mu where k^mu << Mu^mu is discretized and Mu^mu is treated exactly. Radiative corrections to couplings on the lattice are discussed. mNRQCD is particularly useful for calculating B->pi and B->D form factors since errors are similar at low and high recoil.Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure, Lattice2002(heavyquark
