Non-LTE Line-Formation and Abundances of Sulfur and Zinc in F, G, and K Stars

Extensive statistical-equilibrium calculations on neutral sulfur and zinc were carried out, in order to investigate how the non-LTE effect plays a role in the determination of S and Zn abundances in F, G, and K stars. Having checked on the spectra of representative F-type stars (Polaris, Procyon, and alpha Per) and the Sun that our non-LTE corrections yield a reasonable consistency between the abundances derived from different lines, we tried an extensive non-LTE reanalysis of published equivalent-width data of S I and Zn I lines for metal-poor halo/disk stars. According to our calculations, S I 9212/9228/9237 lines suffer significant negative non-LTE corrections amounting to <~ 0.2--0.3 dex, while LTE is practically valid for S I 8683/8694 lines. Embarrassingly, as far as the very metal-poor regime is concerned, a marked discordance is observed between the [S/Fe] values from these two abundance indicators, in the sense that the former attains a nearly flat plateau (or even a slight downward bending) while the latter shows an ever-increasing trend with a further lowering of metallicity. The reason for this discrepancy is yet to be clarified. Regarding Zn, we almost confirmed the characteristic tendencies of [Zn/Fe] reported from recent LTE studies (i.e., an evident/slight increase of [Zn/Fe] with a decrease of [Fe/H] for very metal-poor/disk stars), since the non-LTE corrections for the Zn I 4722/4810 and 6362 lines (tending to be positive and gradually increasing towards lower [Fe/H]) are quantitatively of less significance (<~ 0.1 dex).Comment: 33 pages, 7 figures, PASJ, Vol. 57, No. 5 (2005) in pres

Altered balance of inhibitory and active Fc gamma receptors in murine autoimmune glomerulonephritis

Mag is an MRL-derived glomerulonephritis susceptibility locus that includes the Fcgr2b and Fcgr3 genes encoding the inhibitory Fc gamma receptor IIB (FcγRIIB) and active FcγRIII, respectively. We measured changes in gene balance in three B6.MRLc1 congenic mouse strains containing the 82-86, 92–100 and 100 cM regions of the MRL chromosome 1. We found that only the strain that has 92-100 (which includes Fcgr loci) developed glomerulonephritis. These congenic mice had splenomegaly, elevated blood urea nitrogen, anti-dsDNA antibodies and higher urinary albumin excretion compared to the parental strain C57BL/6(B6). Prior to the development of glomerulonephritis, large CD3- (T cell) and B220- (B cell) positive areas were identified in the spleens of B6.MRLc1(92–100) mice. Both Fc receptors were found in mesangial and dendritic cells; important sites of immune-complex clearance and antigen presentation. The FcγRIII-positive areas were more prominent in the congenic strain. Fcgr2b mRNA was lower in the B6.MRLc1(92–100) kidney and spleen than in those organs of the B6 mice while Fcgr3 expression and the Fcgr3 to Fcgr2b mRNA ratio was higher in the congenic strain kidneys, spleen and thymus than in those of the B6 prior to and at an early stage of glomerulonephritis. We conclude that the imbalance of inhibitory and active Fc gamma receptors influences the pathogenesis of glomerulonephritis

Effects of the removal of the primary tumor and immunotherapy with Corynebacterium parvum on metastatic tumor proliferation.

The effects of surgical intervention by removal of the primary focus, and the effectiveness of an immunomodulator, Corynebacterium parvum (Cp), on the proliferation of metastatic tumor tissue were investigated by following the postoperative changes in the 3H-thymidine labelling rate of metastatic tissue in an experimental model of metastasis in mice. In addition, the delayed type hypersensitivity reaction (DTH) was studied to investigate the immune capacity of the host. The labelling rate of mice that had the primary focus removed remained high with little variation, while that of the mice not operated on decreased gradually. On the other hand, in mice undergoing a sham operation, the rate was the same as that of the mice with the primary focus removed for a short while, but then gradually decreased. When Cp was administered, especially before removal of the primary focus, the rate was lower than that of the tumor bearing control group and decreased steadily. The number of pulmonary metastatic nodules was increased by removal of the primary focus, but this increase was inhibited by the administration of Cp which prolonged life. The depression in the DTH was less in the group given Cp preoperativeLy than in either the group of mice having the primary focus removed or those not having it removed.</p
