The Spitzer Gould Belt Survey of Large Nearby Interstellar Clouds: Discovery of A Dense Embedded Cluster in the Serpens-Aquila Rift
We report the discovery of a nearby, embedded cluster of young stellar objects, associated filamentary infrared dark cloud, and 4.5 mu m shock emission knots from outflows detected in Spitzer IRAC mid-infrared imaging of the Serpens-Aquila Rift obtained as part of the Spitzer Gould Belt Legacy Survey. We also present radial velocity measurements of the region from molecular line observations obtained with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) that suggest the cluster is comoving with the Serpens Main embedded cluster to the north. We therefore assign it 3 degrees the same distance, 260 pc. The core of the new cluster, which we call Serpens South, is composed of an unusually large fraction of protostars (77%) at high mean surface density (> 430 pc(-2)) and short median nearest neighbor spacing (3700 AU). We perform basic cluster structure characterization using nearest neighbor surface density mapping of the YSOs and compare our findings to other known clusters with equivalent analyses available in the literature.Astronom
Deformed Matrix Theories with N=8 and Fivebranes in the PP Wave Background
M(atrix) theory is known to be mass-deformed in the pp-wave background and
still retains all 16 dynamical supersymmetries. We consider generalization of
such deformations on super Yang-Mills quantum mechanics (SYQM) with less
supersymmetry. In particular this includes N=8 U(N) SYQM with a single adjoint
and any number of fundamental hypermultiplets, which is a pp-wave deformation
of DLCQ matrix theory of fivebranes. With k >= 1 fivebranes, we show that a
rich vacuum structure exists, with many continuous family of solutions that
preserve all dynamical supersymmetries. The vacuum moduli space contains copies

The Spitzer c2d Survey of Large, Nearby, Interstellar Clouds. I. Chamaeleon II Observed with MIPS
We present maps of over 1.5 square degrees in Chamaeleon (Cha) II at 24, 70,
and 160 micron observed with the Spitzer Space Telescope Multiband Imaging
Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS) and a 1.2 square degree millimeter map from SIMBA
on the Swedish-ESO Submillimetre Telescope (SEST). The c2d Spitzer Legacy
Team's data reduction pipeline is described in detail. Over 1500 24 micron
sources and 41 70 micron sources were detected by MIPS with fluxes greater than
10-sigma. More than 40 potential YSOs are identified with a MIPS and 2MASS
color-color diagram and by their spectral indices, including two previously
unknown sources with 24 micron excesses. Our new SIMBA millimeter map of Cha II
shows that only a small fraction of the gas is in compact structures with high
column densities. The extended emission seen by MIPS is compared with previous
CO observations. Some selected interesting sources, including two detected at 1
mm, associated with Cha II are discussed in detail and their SEDs presented.
The classification of these sources using MIPS data is found to be consistent

Exact Description of D-branes via Tachyon Condensation
We examine the fluctuations around a Dp-brane solution in an unstable D-brane
system using boundary states and also boundary string field theory. We show
that the fluctuations correctly reproduce the fields on the Dp-brane. Plugging
these into the action of the unstable D-brane system, we recover not only the
tension and RR charge, but also full effective action of the Dp-brane exactly.
Our method works for general unstable D-brane systems and provides a simple
proof of D-brane descent/ascent relations under the tachyon condensation. In
the lowest dimensional unstable D-brane system, called K-matrix theory,
D-branes are described in terms of operator algebra. We show the equivalence of
the geometric and algebraic descriptions of a D-brane world-volume manifold
using the equivalence between path integral and operator formulation of the
boundary quantum mechanics. As a corollary, the Atiyah-Singer index theorem is
naturally obtained by looking at the coupling to RR-fields. We also generalize

'What was your blood sugar reading this morning?': representing diabetes self-management on Facebook
Social networking sites have swiftly become a salient venue for the production and consumption of neoliberal health discourse by individuals and organisations. These platforms offer both opportunities for individuals to accrue coping resources and a means for organisations to promote their agendas to an online audience. Focusing specifically on diabetes, this article examines the representation of social actors and interactional styles on three organisational Pages on Facebook. Drawing on media and communication theories, we situate this linguistic analysis in relation to the communicative affordances employed by these organisations as they publish content online. Diabetes sufferers are represented as an at-risk group whose vulnerabilities can be managed through forms of participation specific to the respective organisation. More popular diabetes Pages draw on the opportunities for social interaction afforded by Facebook and combine informational and promotional content to foster communication between the organisation and its audience. By encouraging reflexive management of diabetes risks, these Pages contribute to the construction of ‘biological citizens’ who interweave habitual interactions on social networking sites with responsible self-care, consumption of health information and health activism
Fuzzy Spheres in pp Wave Matrix String Theory
The behaviour of matrix string theory in the background of a type IIA pp wave
at small string coupling, g_s << 1, is determined by the combination M g_s
where M is a dimensionless parameter proportional to the strength of the
Ramond-Ramond background. For M g_s << 1, the matrix string theory is
conventional; only the degrees of freedom in the Cartan subalgebra contribute,
and the theory reduces to copies of the perturbative string. For M g_s >> 1,
the theory admits degenerate vacua representing fundamental strings blown up
into fuzzy spheres with nonzero lightcone momenta. We determine the spectrum of
small fluctuations around these vacua. Around such a vacuum all N-squared
degrees of freedom are excited with comparable energies. The spectrum of masses
has a spacing which is independent of the radius of the fuzzy sphere, in
agreement with expected behaviour of continuum giant gravitons. Furthermore,
for fuzzy spheres characterized by reducible representations of SU(2) and
vanishing Wilson lines, the boundary conditions on the field are characterized
by a set of continuous angles which shows that generically the blown up strings

Stringy effects in black hole decay
We compute the low energy decay rates of near-extremal three(four) charge
black holes in five(four) dimensional N=4 string theory to sub-leading order in
the large charge approximation. This involves studying stringy corrections to
scattering amplitudes of a scalar field off a black hole. We adapt and use
recently developed techniques to compute such amplitudes as near-horizon
quantities. We then compare this with the corresponding calculation in the
microscopic configuration carrying the same charges as the black hole. We find
perfect agreement between the microscopic and macroscopic calculations; in the
cases we study, the zero energy limit of the scattering cross section is equal
to four times the Wald entropy of the black hole.Comment: 32 page

We develop two new tools for use in Alexandrov geometry: a theory of ramified
orientable double covers and a particularly useful version of the Slice Theorem
for actions of compact Lie groups. These tools are applied to the
classification of compact, positively curved Alexandrov spaces with maximal

Strategic implications of valuation methods
Author's OriginalStrategy is ultimately aimed at creating shareholder value, placing valuation in a central role linking finance and strategy. Focusing on growth options, this paper uses a unique "perfect information" model to examine, from a strategy point of view, the relationship between the market value of the firm and its intrinsic, or DCF, value. Although the research is at the level of the firm, the results have implications at the level of individual strategies and projects, since a firm can be conceptualized as a collection of projects. The findings highlight the relationship between the value of growth options and macroeconomic conditions, industry characteristics, and firm-specific factors.
