"The Shadow Falls": Understanding the Factors Involved in Decision-Making in Local Authority Children's Services

This research explores outcomes for 31 children in 17 families, from parenting assessment work undertaken by the author in her role as an independent social worker, for a local authority between 2006 and 2008. The data collected in the course of the work was used in order to identify themes and patterns across cases, to form an understanding of the common difficulties faced by families in complex child protection cases. The assessments were followed up with interviews with the social workers to find out what had happened to the child or family. The themes arising from these two sets of data are presented as case studies, highlighting common themes about the psychodynamic factors affecting decision making in child protection work and the emotional impact of the work. The study describes a process whereby the social worker can lose sight of the child’s needs due to the overwhelming needs of the parents. The findings advocate a process of containment through a model of reflective supervision, which takes account of the emotional impact of the work, bringing the child back into focus whilst not losing sight of the parent’s needs. A process of reconnection with the tragedy behind the cases is also described. This study demonstrates how difficult it is for one lone social worker to keep the parent and child’s needs in mind and therefore advocates for a team approach to complex child protection work

Heparin release from thermosensitive hydrogels

Thermosensitive hydrogels (TSH) were synthesized and investigated as heparin releasing polymers for the prevention of surface induced thrombosis. TSH were synthesized with N-isopropyl acrylamide (NiPAAm) copolymerized with butyl methacrylate (BMA) (hydrophobic) or acrylic acid (AAc) (hydrophilic) comonomers. The incorporation of hydrophobic and hydrophilic comonomers strongly influences the swelling/shrinking behavior of TSH. Upon deswelling, gels containing the hydrophobic comonomer formed a skin-type layer, which acted as a rate controlling membrane, while the hydrophilic comonomer greatly increased gel swelling, relative to NiPAAm. Equilibrium swelling in isotonic PBS and deswelling kinetics of the synthesized gels were examined at various temperatures. The loading of heparin into the different gels was studied as a function of temperature, solution concentration, and gel composition. The release kinetics of heparin was found to be influenced by gel composition and loading temperature; the release correlated with the gel deswelling kinetics. In the case of Ni-PAAm/BMA gel, the release profile of heparin was affected by temperature dependent properties of the skin-type diffusional barrier formed on the gel surface

Guests experiences of Maytree during and after their stay

In 2012, researchers from the University of East London and the Tavistock Clinic published the results of a project aimed at assessing how guests experienced their stay at Maytree and how it impacted on them after leaving. The study found that a large majority of guests felt less suicidal during their stay and for months afterwards. Furthermore, many guests felt their stay was 'transformational', indicating that Maytree had a significant and powerful impact which led them to reappraise their lives

Chalmers Energiverksamhet 2008

SAMMANFATTNING Inventeringen av energiverksamheten på Chalmers visar på Chalmers styrka på området men även på vissa svagheter. Det finns ett uttalat behov av ökat synliggörande och marknadsföring av Chalmers samlade energiverksamhet och här kan CEC spela en viktig roll i framtiden. Resultaten kan sammanfattas enligt följande: • Chalmers energirelaterade verksamhet omfattar ca en tredjedel av Chalmers totala verksamhet fördelad på: - 17 institutioner med tyngdpunkt på 5-6 institutioner. Kopplingar till energi finns med varierande styrka på samtliga institutioner. - Fyra kompetenscentra CERC, HTC, KCK och SHC - Åtta mastersprogram: Electrical Power Engineering, Industrial Ecology - for a sustainable society, Sustainable Energy Systems, Innovative and Sustainable Chemical Engineering, Applied Mecanics, Applied Physics, Design for Sustainable Development samt Structural Engineering and Building Performance Design.(Se fig.3). Ett nytt mastersprogram Nuclear Engineering planeras till läsåret 2009-2010. • Verksamheten kännetecknas av djup och bredd med internationella spjutspetsar inom flera områden där detaljkunskaper på tekniknivå kompletteras med systemkunnande på hög nivå och där grundläggande och tillämpad forskning ofta sker i samverkan. • Chalmers har en omfattande samverkan med andra forskargrupper utanför Chalmers nationellt och internationellt samt med näringslivet. • Chalmers ligger i topp som mottagare av forskningsmedel från Energimyndigheten. • Varumärket Chalmers är starkt och kännetecknas av kvalitet, kompetens, öppenhet och samverkan. • Chalmers kraftfulla tidiga satsningar på miljöområdet - bildande av GMV tillsammans med GU och ”Miljöinitiativet” - har bidragit till att Chalmers intagit en internationellt ledande position inom miljöområdet och medverkan i nationella och internationella strategiska allianser, exempelvis Alliance for Global Sustainability. • Bildandet av CEC och utveckling av större projekt t.ex. Pathway-projektet, kompetenscentra och masterprogram på energiområdet har bidragit till att Chalmers energiverksamhet har uppmärksammats nationellt och internationellt. Intryck och möjligheter • Intrycket från inventeringsarbetet är samtidigt att Chalmers samlade styrkor inte utnyttjas till fullo p.g.a. att samverkan mellan olika forskargrupper inte sker i önskad omfattning. • Kunskapen om vad andra forskargrupper gör inom Chalmers är inte sällan bristfällig – främst hos dem som inte är aktiva inom större gemensamma Chalmerssatsningar som CEC, GMV och AGS. • Chalmers verksamhet på området upplevs av många som fragmenterad såväl inom som utom Chalmers. Det kan vara svårt att få grepp om helheten och vem som gör vad. • Ökad synlighet av Chalmers samlade styrkor och kompetens på energiområdet bedöms som viktig och skapar nya möjligheter för såväl forskningen som utbildningen i framtiden. • CEC:s verksamhet har fått olika genomslag inom Chalmers beroende på den roll och det uppdrag som CEC haft sedan starten. Generellt finns en positiv syn hos deltagande forskargrupper och på den bredare roll som CEC skulle kunna spela inte minst när det gäller synliggörande av verksamheterna (forskning och utbildning) och kommunikation med omvärlden. Det påpekas att det är en svaghet att CEC inte representerar all energirelaterad verksamhet vid Chalmers. • Den grundläggande uppfattningen inom Chalmers är att det behövs en funktion som CEC representerar och att alla som har energirelaterad verksamhet (forskning och utbildning) bör finnas med i ett CEC, som representerar hela Chalmers energiprofil och inte bara valda delar. • När det gäller formen för medlemskap i och finansiering av CEC finns olika uppfattningar. Här utkristalliseras två nivåer på deltagandet dels de som önskar få hjälp med information, marknadsföring och bli synliggjorda (internt och externt) och dels de som även önskar få aktivt stöd med koordinering och mäkleri för att få till stånd komplexa ämnesövergripande projekt ofta av systemkaraktär. Insatser för information och marknadsföring är av ett för hela Chalmers gemensamt intresse och bör finansieras av Chalmers centralt. Det mer specifika stödet för koordinering och mäklarfunktionen som sker i arbetet inom CEC:s plattformar bör intresserade forskargrupper själva finansiera. • Resultat från inventeringen utgör en viktig grund för vidareutveckling CEC:s roller och uppgifter inom Chalmers. En fortsatt dialog bör föras med intresserade forskargrupper för att utveckla former och finansiering för medverkan i CEC

Only One Oar in the Water: The Political Failure of School Desegregation in Yonkers, New York

Political efforts to desegregate public schools do not fail solely because of political opposition. They fail when political opposition joins and interacts with an institutional structure that ambiguously divides educational authority between state and local actors. Both factors-a high level of political controversy and a shared system of educational authority-were present in Yonkers, New York during the 1960s and 1970s, and jointly explain the district's failure to desegregate its schools. Using a "regression by hand," the authors show that neither factor taken alone necessarily undermines a policy's success in the political arena. The political success of New York's policy to fund nonpublic schools demonstrates that controversial policies can be realized when the institutional structure that creates them does not divide authority between state and local actors. Conversely, the political success of efforts to reform Yonkers' programs in special education shows that shared responsibility can promote educational reform if the policy is not controversial. The authors conclude by cautioning against abandoning efforts to desegregate public schools and calling for changes in the structure of shared state and local responsibility for educational policy.African and African American StudiesGovernmen
