Evaluation of performance impairment by spacecraft contaminants
The environmental contaminants (isolated as off-gases in Skylab and Apollo missions) were evaluated. Specifically, six contaminants were evaluated for their effects on the behavior of juvenile baboons. The concentrations of contaminants were determined through preliminary range-finding studies with laboratory rats. The contaminants evaluated were acetone, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK), trichloroethylene (TCE), heptane and Freon 21. When the studies of the individual gases were completed, the baboons were also exposed to a mixture of MEK and TCE. The data obtained revealed alterations in the behavior of baboons exposed to relatively low levels of the contaminants. These findings were presented at the First International Symposium on Voluntary Inhalation of Industrial Solvents in Mexico City, June 21-24, 1976. A preprint of the proceedings is included
High Energy Gamma-Ray Emission From Blazars: EGRET Observations
We will present a summary of the observations of blazars by the Energetic
Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory
(CGRO). EGRET has detected high energy gamma-ray emission at energies greater
than 100 MeV from more that 50 blazars. These sources show inferred isotropic
luminosities as large as ergs s. One of the most
remarkable characteristics of the EGRET observations is that the gamma-ray
luminosity often dominates the bolometric power of the blazar. A few of the
blazars are seen to exhibit variability on very short time-scales of one day or
less. The combination of high luminosities and time variations seen in the
gamma-ray data indicate that gamma-rays are an important component of the
relativistic jet thought to characterize blazars. Currently most models for
blazars involve a beaming scenario. In leptonic models, where electrons are the
primary accelerated particles, gamma-ray emission is believed to be due to
inverse Compton scattering of low energy photons, although opinions differ as
to the source of the soft photons. Hardronic models involve secondary
production or photomeson production followed by pair cascades, and predict

Neutron Vibrational Spectroscopy and First-Principles Calculations of the Ternary Hydrides Li\u3csub\u3e4\u3c/sub\u3eSi\u3csub\u3e2\u3c/sub\u3eH(D) and Li\u3csub\u3e4\u3c/sub\u3eGe\u3csub\u3e2\u3c/sub\u3eH(D): Electronic Structure and Lattice Dynamics
Using combined neutron spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, we investigated the electronic structure and vibrational dynamics of the recently discovered class of ternary hydrides Li4Tt2H (Tt=Si and Ge). In these compounds, all hydrogen atoms are located in a single type of Li6-defined octahedral site. The Tt atoms form long-range Tt-Tt chains sandwiched between each Li6-octahedra layer. The Li-H interactions are strongly ionic, with bond lengths comparable to those in LiH. Our density functional theory calculations indicate that Li atoms transfer their electrons to both H and Tt atoms. Tt atoms within the Tt-Tt chain are bonded covalently. The electronic density of states reveals that both hydrides exhibit metallic behavior. The observed vibrational spectra of these hydrides are in good overall agreement with the calculated phonon modes. There is evidence of dispersion induced splitting in the optical phonon peaks that can be ascribed to the coupling of H vibrations within the Li6-octahedra layers
Satellites of the largest Kuiper Belt objects
We have searched the four brightest objects in the Kuiper Belt for the presence of satellites using the newly commissioned Keck Observatory Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics system. Satellites are seen around three of the four objects: Pluto (whose satellite Charon is well-known and whose recently discovered smaller satellites are too faint to be detected), 2003 EL61 (where a second satellite is seen in addition to the previously known satellite), and 2003 UB313 (where a satellite is seen for the first time). The object 2005 FY9, the brightest Kuiper Belt object (KBO) after Pluto, does not have a satellite detectable within 0".4 with a brightness of more than 1% of the primary. The presence of satellites around three of the four brightest KBOs is inconsistent with the fraction of satellites in the Kuiper Belt at large at the 99.2% confidence level, suggesting a different formation mechanism for these largest KBO satellites. The two satellites of 2003 EL61, and the one satellite of 2003 UB313, with fractional brightnesses of 5% and 1.5%, and 2%, of their primaries, respectively, are significantly fainter relative to their primaries than other known KBO satellites, again pointing to possible differences in their origin

Not fitting in and getting out : psychological type and congregational satisfaction among Anglican churchgoers in England
Listening to the motivations reported by individuals for ceasing church attendance and becoming church leavers, Francis and Richter identified high on the list the sense of "not fitting in". Drawing on psychological type theory, several recent studies have documented the way in which some psychological types are over-represented in church congregations and other psychological types are under-represented. Bringing these two observations together, the present study tested the hypothesis that church congregations have created type-alike communities within which individuals displaying the opposite type preferences are more likely to feel marginalised and to display lower levels of satisfaction with the congregations they attend. Data were provided by 1867 churchgoers who completed a measure of psychological type, together with measures of frequency of attendance and congregational satisfaction. These data confirmed that congregations were weighted towards preferences for introversion, sensing, feeling and judging, and that individuals displaying the opposite preferences (especially intuition, thinking and perceiving) recorded lower levels of congregational satisfaction. The implications of these findings are discussed for promoting congregational retention by enhancing awareness of psychological type preferences among those who attend
Logarithmic Corrections to Extremal Black Hole Entropy from Quantum Entropy Function
We evaluate the one loop determinant of matter multiplet fields of N=4
supergravity in the near horizon geometry of quarter BPS black holes, and use
it to calculate logarithmic corrections to the entropy of these black holes
using the quantum entropy function formalism. We show that even though
individual fields give non-vanishing logarithmic contribution to the entropy,
the net contribution from all the fields in the matter multiplet vanishes. Thus
logarithmic corrections to the entropy of quarter BPS black holes, if present,
must be independent of the number of matter multiplet fields in the theory.
This is consistent with the microscopic results. During our analysis we also
determine the complete spectrum of small fluctuations of matter multiplet

Lower Rotational Inertia and Larger Leg Muscles Indicate More Rapid Turns in Tyrannosaurids Than in Other Large Theropods
Synopsis: Tyrannosaurid dinosaurs had large preserved leg muscle attachments and low rotational inertia relative to their body mass, indicating that they could turn more quickly than other large theropods.
Methods: To compare turning capability in theropods, we regressed agility estimates against body mass, incorporating superellipse-based modeled mass, centers of mass, and rotational inertia (mass moment of inertia). Muscle force relative to body mass is a direct correlate of agility in humans, and torque gives potential angular acceleration. Agility scores therefore include rotational inertia values divided by proxies for (1) muscle force (ilium area and estimates of m. caudofemoralis longus cross-section), and (2) musculoskeletal torque. Phylogenetic ANCOVA (phylANCOVA) allow assessment of differences in agility between tyrannosaurids and non-tyrannosaurid theropods (accounting for both ontogeny and phylogeny). We applied conditional error probabilities a(p) to stringently test the null hypothesis of equal agility.
Results: Tyrannosaurids consistently have agility index magnitudes twice those of allosauroids and some other theropods of equivalent mass, turning the body with both legs planted or pivoting over a stance leg. PhylANCOVA demonstrates definitively greater agilities in tyrannosaurids, and phylogeny explains nearly all covariance. Mass property results are consistent with those of other studies based on skeletal mounts, and between different figure-based methods (our main mathematical slicing procedures, lofted 3D computer models, and simplified graphical double integration).
Implications: The capacity for relatively rapid turns in tyrannosaurids is ecologically intriguing in light of their monopolization of large (\u3e400 kg), toothed dinosaurian predator niches in their habitats

Habitable Zones in the Universe
Habitability varies dramatically with location and time in the universe. This
was recognized centuries ago, but it was only in the last few decades that
astronomers began to systematize the study of habitability. The introduction of
the concept of the habitable zone was key to progress in this area. The
habitable zone concept was first applied to the space around a star, now called
the Circumstellar Habitable Zone. Recently, other, vastly broader, habitable
zones have been proposed. We review the historical development of the concept
of habitable zones and the present state of the research. We also suggest ways
to make progress on each of the habitable zones and to unify them into a single
