    Gallium arsenide solar cells are considered for several high temperature missions in space. Both near-Sun and concentrator missions could involve cell temperatures on the order of 200 C. Performance measurements of cells at elevated temperatures are usually made using simulated sunlight and a matched reference cell. Due to the change in bandgap with increasing temperature at portions of the spectrum where considerable simulated irradiance is present, there are significant differences in measured short circuit current at elevated temperatures among different simulators. To illustrate this, both experimental and theoretical data are presented for gallium arsenide cells

    A survey of organic grain and oilseed producers in Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin was conducted to collect information about their demographic characteristics, production and price risk management strategies, yields and losses, and crop insurance decisions. The data are analyzed using a discrete choice model to establish which variables influence organic producers’ decision of whether to purchase crop insurance and also which ones affect the insurance product choice when applicable. The study describes the risk profiles of organic producers, and analyzes whether significant variations exist between organic and conventional methods of production so as to quantitatively determine the differential production risk associated with organic production.     A microcontroller system for investigating the catch effect: Functional electrical stimulation of the common peroneal nerve

    Correction of drop foot in hemiplegic gait is achieved by electrical stimulation of the common peroneal nerve with a series of pulses at a fixed frequency. However, during normal gait, the electromyographic signals from the tibialis anterior muscle indicate that muscle force is not constant but varies during the swing phase. The application of double pulses for the correction of drop foot may enhance the gait by generating greater torque at the ankle and thereby increase the efficiency of the stimulation with reduced fatigue. A flexible controller has been designed around the Odstock Drop Foot Stimulator to deliver different profiles of pulses implementing doublets and optimum series. A peripheral interface controller (PIC) microcontroller with some external circuits has been designed and tested to accommodate six profiles. Preliminary results of the measurements from a normal subject seated in a multi-moment chair (an isometric torque measurement device) indicate that profiles containing doublets and optimum spaced pulses look favourable for clinical use

Our hypothesis is that this market failure is due to the absence of an accurate option pricing model for commodities where mean reversion can be expected. Standard option pricing models assume proportionality between price variance and time to maturity. This proportionality is not a valid assumption for commodities where supply response works to bring prices back to production costs.     Renormalization of heavy-light currents in moving NRQCD

    Heavy-light decays such as B→πℓΜB \to \pi \ell \nu, B→K∗γB \to K^{*} \gamma and B→K(∗)ℓℓB \to K^{(*)} \ell \ell can be used to constrain the parameters of the Standard Model and in indirect searches for new physics. While the precision of experimental results has improved over the last years this has still to be matched by equally precise theoretical predictions. The calculation of heavy-light form factors is currently carried out in lattice QCD. Due to its small Compton wavelength we discretize the heavy quark in an effective non-relativistic theory. By formulating the theory in a moving frame of reference discretization errors in the final state are reduced at large recoil. Over the last years the formalism has been improved and tested extensively. Systematic uncertainties are reduced by renormalizing the m(oving)NRQCD action and heavy-light decay operators. The theory differs from QCD only for large loop momenta at the order of the lattice cutoff and the calculation can be carried out in perturbation theory as an expansion in the strong coupling constant. In this paper we calculate the one loop corrections to the heavy-light vector and tensor operator. Due to the complexity of the action the generation of lattice Feynman rules is automated and loop integrals are solved by the adaptive Monte Carlo integrator VEGAS. We discuss the infrared and ultraviolet divergences in the loop integrals both in the continuum and on the lattice. The light quarks are discretized in the ASQTad and highly improved staggered quark (HISQ) action; the formalism is easily extended to other quark actions.Comment: 24 pages, 11 figures.     The Index Theorem and Universality Properties of the Low-lying Eigenvalues of Improved Staggered Quarks

    We study various improved staggered quark Dirac operators on quenched gluon backgrounds in lattice QCD generated using a Symanzik-improved gluon action. We find a clear separation of the spectrum into would-be zero modes and others. The number of would-be zero modes depends on the topological charge as expected from the Index Theorem, and their chirality expectation value is large (approximately 0.7). The remaining modes have low chirality and show clear signs of clustering into quartets and approaching the random matrix theory predictions for all topological charge sectors. We conclude that improvement of the fermionic and gauge actions moves the staggered quarks closer to the continuum limit where they respond correctly to QCD topology.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
