Monopole clusters in Abelian projected gauge theories
We show that the monopole currents which one obtains in the maximally Abelian
gauge of SU(2) fall into two quite distinct classes (when the volume is large
enough). In each field configuration there is precisely one cluster that
permeates the whole lattice volume. It has a current density and a magnetic
screening mass that scale and it produces the whole of the string tension. The
remaining clusters have a number density that follows an approximate power law
proportional to the inverse cube of l where l is the length of the monopole
world line in lattice units. These clusters are localised in space-time with
radii which vary as the square root of l. In terms of the radius r these
`lumps' have a scale-invariant distribution proportional to (dr/r . 1/{r^4}).
Moreover they appear not to contribute at all to the string tension. The fact
that they are scale-invariant at small distances would seem to rule out an

Monopole clusters, Z(2) vortices and confinement in SU(2)
We extend our previous study of magnetic monopole currents in the maximally
Abelian gauge [hep-lat/9712003] to larger lattices at small lattice spacings
(20^4 at beta = 2.5 and 32^4 at beta = 2.5115). We confirm that at these weak
couplings there continues to be one monopole cluster that is very much longer
than the rest and that the string tension, K, is entirely due to it. The
remaining clusters are compact objects whose population as a function of radius
follows a power law that deviates from the scale invariant form, but much too
weakly to suggest a link with the analytically calculable size distribution of
small instantons. We also search for traces of Z(2) vortices in the Abelian
projected fields; either as closed loops of `magnetic' flux or through
appropriate correlations amongst the monopoles. We find, by direct calculation,
that there is no confining condensate of such flux loops. We also find, through
the calculation of doubly charged Wilson loops within the monopole fields, that
there is no suppression of the q=2 effective string tension out to at distances
of at least r ~ 1.6/sqrt{K}, suggesting that if there are any vortices they are

The string tension in the maximally Abelian gauge after smoothing
We apply smoothing to SU(2) lattice field configurations in 3+1 dimensions
before fixing to the maximally Abelian gauge. The Abelian projected string
tension is shown to be stable under this, whilst the monopole string tension
declines by O(30%). Blocking of the SU(2) fields reduces this effect, but the
use of extended monopole definitions does not. We discuss these results in the
context of additional confining excitations in the U(1) vacuum.Comment: LATTICE98(confine
Amplitude squeezed light from a laser
Intensity squeezed light was successfully generated using semiconductor lasers with sub-Poissonian pumping. Control of the pumping statistics is crucial and is achieved by a large series resistor which regulates the pump current; its sub-Poissonian statistics are then transferred to the laser output. The sub-Poissonian pumping of other laser systems is not so simple, however, and their potential as squeezed states sources is apparently diminished. We consider a conventional laser incoherently pumped well above threshold, and allow for pump depletion of the ground state. In this regime, sub-Poissonian photon statistics and squeezed amplitude fluctuations are produced
The monopole mass in the three-dimensional Georgi-Glashow model
We study the three-dimensional Georgi-Glashow model to demonstrate how
magnetic monopoles can be studied fully non-perturbatively in lattice Monte
Carlo simulations, without any assumptions about the smoothness of the field
configurations. We examine the apparent contradiction between the conjectured
analytic connection of the `broken' and `symmetric' phases, and the
interpretation of the mass (i.e., the free energy) of the fully quantised 't
Hooft-Polyakov monopole as an order parameter to distinguish the phases. We use
Monte Carlo simulations to measure the monopole free energy and its first
derivative with respect to the scalar mass. On small volumes we compare this to
semi-classical predictions for the monopole. On large volumes we show that the
free energy is screened to zero, signalling the formation of a confining
monopole condensate. This screening does not allow the monopole mass to be

This document was designed to provide a repository for information pertaining to 144 Operations and Maintenance Instructions (OMI) controlled operations in the Orbiter Processing Facility (OPF), Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB), and PAD. It provides a way to accumulate information about required crew sizes, operations task time duration (serial and/or parallel), special Ground Support Equipment (GSE). required, and identification of a potential application of existing technology or the need for the development of a new technolgoy item
Shuttle Ground Operations Efficiencies/Technologies (SGOE/T) study. Volume 1: Executive summary
Methods and technolgoy were defined to reduce the overall operations cost of a major space program. Space Shuttle processing at Kennedy Space Center (KSC) was designed as the working model that would be the source of the operational information. Methods of improving efficiency of ground operations were assessed and technology elements that could reduce cost identified. Emphasis is on: (1) specific technology items and (2) management approaches required to develop and support efficient ground operations. Prime study results are to be recommendations on how to achieve more efficient operations and identification of existing or new technology that would make vehicle processing in both the current program and future programs more efficient and, therefore, less costly

The Ground Operations Evaluation describes the breath and depth of the various study elements selected as a result of an operational analysis conducted during the early part of the study. Analysis techniques used for the evaluation are described in detail. Elements selected for further evaluation are identified; the results of the analysis documented; and a follow-on course of action recommended. The background and rationale for developing recommendations for the current Shuttle or for future programs is presented
Parasites Recovered From Overwintering Mimosa Webworm, \u3ci\u3eHomadaula Anisocentra\u3c/i\u3e (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae)
The mimosa webworm, Homadaula anisocentra, overwinters in the pupal stage. Two parasites, Parania geniculata and Elasmus albizziae, are associated with overwintering pupae or the immediate prepupal larvae. Combined parasitism during the winters of 1981-82,1982-83, and 1983-84 was 2.1,3.9, and 2.9%, respectively
High power coupled CO2 waveguide laser array
A hollow-bore ridge waveguide technique for phase locking arrays of coupled CO2 rf excited waveguide lasers was demonstrated. Stable phase-locked operation of two- and three-channel arrays has been demonstrated at the 50 W output level. Preliminary experiments with a five-element array generated an output power of 95 W but phase-locked operation was not conclusively demonstrated
