    Coastal resource planning system: Integrating evaluation of ecological integrity and ecosystem services valuation

    Efficient and effective coastal management decisions rely on knowledge of the impact of human activities on ecosystem integrity, vulnerable species, and valued ecosystem services—collectively, human impact on environmental quality (EQ). Ecosystem-based management (EBM) is an emerging approach to address the dynamics and complexities of coupled social-ecological systems. EBM “is intended to directly address the long-term sustainable delivery of ecosystem services and the resilience of marine ecosystems to perturbations” (Rosenberg and Sandifer, 2009). The lack of a tool that integrates human choices with the ecological connections between contributing watersheds and nearshore areas, and that incorporates valuation of ecosystem services, is a critical missing piece needed for effective and efficient coastal management. To address the need for an integrative tool for evaluation of human impacts on ecosystems and their services, Battelle developed the EcoVal™ Environmental Quality Evaluation System. The EcoVal system is an updated (2009) version of the EQ Evaluation System for Water Resources developed by Battelle for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (Dee et al., 1972). The Battelle EQ evaluation system has a thirty-year history of providing a standard approach to evaluate watershed EQ.     Early Australian Optical and Radio Observations of Centaurus A

    The discoveries of the radio source Centaurus A and its optical counterpart NGC 5128 were important landmarks in the history of Australian astronomy. NGC 5128 was first observed in August 1826 by James Dunlop during a survey of southern objects at the Parramatta Observatory, west of the settlement at Sydney Cove. The observatory had been founded a few years earlier by Thomas Brisbane, the new governor of the British colony of New South Wales. Just over 120 years later, John Bolton, Gordon Stanley and Bruce Slee discovered the radio source Centaurus A at the Dover Heights field station in Sydney, operated by CSIRO's Radiophysics Laboratory (the forerunner of the Australia Telescope National Facility). This paper will describe this early historical work and summarise further studies of Centaurus A by other Radiophysics groups up to 1960.Comment: 45 pages, 43 figure

    Methanol formation in TW Hya and future prospects for detecting larger complex molecules in disks with ALMA

    Gas-phase methanol was recently detected in a protoplanetary disk for the first time with ALMA. The peak abundance and distribution of methanol observed in TW Hya differed from that predicted by chemical models. Here, the chemistry of methanol gas and ice is calculated using a physical model tailored for TW Hya with the aim to contrast the results with the recent detection in this source. New pathways for the formation of larger complex molecules (e.g., ethylene glycol) are included in an updated chemical model, as well as the fragmentation of methanol ice upon photodesorption. It is found that including fragmentation upon photodesorption improves the agreement between the peak abundance reached in the chemical models with that observed in TW Hya (∼10−11 with respect to H2); however, the model predicts that the peak in emission resides a factor of 2 − 3 farther out in the disk than the ALMA images. Reasons for the persistent differences in the gas-phase methanol distribution between models and the observations of TW Hya are discussed. These include the location of the ice reservoir which may coincide with the compact mm-dust disk (≲ 60 au) and sources of gas-phase methanol which have not yet been considered in models. The possibility of detecting larger molecules with ALMA is also explored. Calculations of the rotational spectra of complex molecules other than methanol using a parametric model constrained by the TW Hya observations suggest that the detection of individual emission lines of complex molecules with ALMA remains challenging. However, the signal-to-noise ratio can be enhanced via stacking of multiple transitions which have similar upper energy levels

    Cloning and characterization of Trypanosoma congolense and T. vivax nucleoside transporters reveal the potential of P1-type carriers for the discovery of broad-spectrum nucleoside-based therapeutics against Animal African trypanosomiasis

    African Animal Trypanosomiasis (AAT), caused predominantly by Trypanosoma brucei brucei, T. vivax and T. congolense, is a fatal livestock disease throughout Sub-Saharan Africa. Treatment options are very limited and threatened by resistance. Tubercidin (7-deazaadenosine) analogs have shown activity against individual parasites but viable chemotherapy must be active against all three species. Divergence in sensitivity to nucleoside antimetabolites could be caused by differences in nucleoside transporters. Having previously characterized the T. brucei nucleoside carriers, we here report the functional expression and characterization of the main adenosine transporters of T. vivax (TvxNT3) and T. congolense (TcoAT1/NT10), in a Leishmania mexicana cell line (‘SUPKO’) lacking adenosine uptake. Both carriers were similar to the T. brucei P1-type transporters and bind adenosine mostly through interactions with N3, N7 and 3′-OH. Expression of TvxNT3 and TcoAT1 sensitized SUPKO cells to various 7-substituted tubercidins and other nucleoside analogs although tubercidin itself is a poor substrate for P1-type transporters. Individual nucleoside EC50s were similar for T. b. brucei, T. congolense, T. evansi and T. equiperdum but correlated less well with T. vivax. However, multiple nucleosides including 7-halogentubercidines displayed pEC50>7 for all species and, based on transporter and anti-parasite SAR analyses, we conclude that nucleoside chemotherapy for AAT is viable
