Maximum-entropy Surrogation in Network Signal Detection
Multiple-channel detection is considered in the context of a sensor network
where raw data are shared only by nodes that have a common edge in the network
graph. Established multiple-channel detectors, such as those based on
generalized coherence or multiple coherence, use pairwise measurements from
every pair of sensors in the network and are thus directly applicable only to
networks whose graphs are completely connected. An approach introduced here
uses a maximum-entropy technique to formulate surrogate values for missing
measurements corresponding to pairs of nodes that do not share an edge in the
network graph. The broader potential merit of maximum-entropy baselines in
quantifying the value of information in sensor network applications is also

Seasonal Occurrence of the Sod Webworm Moths (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) of Ohio
While nearly 100 species of sod webworms are known to occur in North America, the species complex and seasonal occurrence of these moths has been documented in relatively few states. For Ohio, there is little published record of the sod webworm species complex, and the seasonal occurrence of only a few economically important species has been documented. Using black light traps, sod web worm adult flight activity was monitored over the course of three to five years at four different locations throughout Ohio. In this paper we report the seasonal occurrence of sod web worms species captured at these locations. These data provide a historical benchmark of sod webworm species diversity, local abundance, and seasonal occurrence in Ohio
Persistence of chlorpropham (CIPC) in the concrete flooring of potato stores
The loss of the sprout suppressant, chlorpropham (CIPC), to the fabric of potato stores is currently of concern due to the risk of potential cross contamination of other crops subsequently housed in these stores. HPLC UV/VIS and GCMS methods were successfully employed to detect CIPC in the concrete flooring of research and commercial potato stores with histories of between 1 and 26 years of use. The concentrations in identical research stores, with different numbers of applications, were in the range 0.58–5.7 and 3.4–112 μg g−1, suggesting the magnitude of contamination was influenced by the number of applications. Commercial store A, with a history of 18 seasons of applications (estimate of total CIPC applied 2040 kg), had concentrations varying between 6 and 48 μg g−1 in the top three centimetres, with more than 92% within the top centimetre. In contrast, commercial store B, with a history of less than five seasons of applications (estimate of total CIPC applied 319 kg), had concentrations varying between 0.58 and 304 μg g−1 in the top four centimetres, with less than 47% within the top centimetre. The difference in depth distributions between A and B may be due to the structural integrity of the concrete, which was much poorer in B. CIPC was persistent in all stores irrespective of the total quantities of CIPC applied and date of the final application
Knowledge of Clinical Measures and Healthcare Adherence In Young Gay and Bisexual Men Living with HIV/AIDS
Knowledge of HIV/AIDS test results and adherence to healthcare interventions are two important outcomes that reflect proper HIV/AIDS management. This study aimed to determine which demographic and HIV acceptance measures were significantly associated with health literacy and adherence indicators in young MSM. 200 HIV/AIDS positive young MSM completed computer based surveys regarding demographics, HIV/AIDS health literacy indicators, and HIV/AIDS acceptance measures. It was found that young African American MSM, in comparison to young white MSM, had lower odds of knowing both viral load and CD4 measures; health literacy indicators. Further, participants who had a high school diploma were found to have increased odds of knowing both their CD4 and viral load measures in comparison to those young MSM participants who had not obtained a high school diploma. Further research should examine the factors associated with the lack of health literacy reported by young African American MSM
Silicon Nanocrystal Field-Effect Light-Emitting Devices
We describe the operation of a light-emitting device in which silicon nanocrystals are electrically pumped via the field-effect electroluminescence (EL) mechanism. In contrast to the simultaneous bipolar carrier injection used in conventional p-n junction light-emitting diodes, this device employs sequential unipolar programming of both electrons and holes across a tunneling barrier from the same semiconductor channel. Light emission is strongly correlated with the injection of second carriers into nanocrystals that have been previously programmed with charges of the opposite sign. The properties of this device are well described by the model of a charge injection through Coulomb field modified tunneling processes. We additionally consider limiting performance bounds for potential future devices fabricated from nanocrystals with different radiative emission rates
