    Electronic Transport in the Oxygen Deficient Ferromagnetic Semiconducting TiO2−δ_{2-\delta}

    TiO2−δ_{2-\delta} films were deposited on (100) Lanthanum aluminates LaAlO3_{3} substrates at a very low oxygen chamber pressure P≈0.3P\approx 0.3 mtorr employing a pulsed laser ablation deposition technique. In previous work, it was established that the oxygen deficiency in these films induced ferromagnetism. In this work it is demonstrated that this same oxygen deficiency also gives rise to semiconductor titanium ion impurity donor energy levels. Transport resistivity measurements in thin films of TiO2−δ_{2-\delta} are presented as a function of temperature and magnetic field. Magneto- and Hall- resistivity is explained in terms of electronic excitations from the titanium ion donor levels into the conduction band.Comment: RevTeX4, Four pages, Four Figures in ^.eps forma

    Giant Enhancement of Magnetostrictive Response in Directionally-Solidified Fe83Ga17Erx Compounds

    We report, for the first time, correlations between crystal structure, microstructure and magnetofunctional response in directionally solidified [110]-textured Fe83Ga17Erx (0 < x < 1.2) alloys. The morphology of the doped samples consists of columnar grains, mainly composed of a matrix phase and precipitates of a secondary phase deposited along the grain boundary region. An enhancement of more than ~275% from ~45 to 170 ppm is observed in the saturation magnetostriction value (λs) of Fe83Ga17Erx alloys with the introduction of small amounts of Er. Moreover, it was noted that the low field derivative of magnetostriction with respect to an applied magnetic field (i.e., dλs/dHapp for Happ up to 1000 Oe) increases by ~230% with Er doping (dλs/dHapp,FeGa= 0.045 ppm/Oe; dλs/dHapp,FeGaEr= 0.15 ppm/Oe). The enhanced magnetostrictive response of the Fe83Ga17Erx alloys is ascribed to an amalgamation of microstructural and electronic factors, namely: (i) improved grain orientation and local strain effects due to deposition of Er in the intergranular region; and (ii) strong local magnetocrystalline anisotropy, due to the highly anisotropic localized nature of the 4f electronic charge distribution of the Er atom. Overall, this work provides guidelines for further improving galfenol-based materials systems for diverse applications in the power and energy sector

    Large-scale synthesis of high moment FeCo nanoparticles using modified polyol synthesis

    Binary alloys of Fe and Co have among the highest magnetizations of any transition metal alloy systems, but their affinity to form oxides act to reduce the magnetization of nanoparticles as their size is reduced below ∼30 nm. Here, we demonstrate the synthesis of single phase, size-controlled FeCo nanoparticles having magnetization greater than 200 emu/g via a non-aqueous method in which ethylene glycol served as solvent and reducing agent as well as surfactant. Experiments indicated pure-phase FeCo nanoparticles, having saturationmagnetization up to 221 emu/g for sizes of 20–30 nm, in single batch processes resulting in \u3e 2 g/batch. Post-synthesis oxidation of nanoparticles was investigated until very stable nanoparticles were realized with constant magnetization over time

    Effects of precompetition state anxiety interventions on performance time and accuracy among amateur soccer players: Revisiting the matching hypothesis

    In this study, we tested the matching ypothesis, which contends that administration of a cognitive or somatic anxiety intervention should be matched to a participant's dominant anxiety response. Sixty-one male soccer players (mean age 31.6 years, s=6.3) were assigned to one of four groups based on their responses to the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2, which was modified to include a directional scale. Interventions were randomly administered in a counterbalanced order 10 min before each performance trial on a soccer skill test. The dominantly cognitive anxious group (n=17), the dominantly somatic anxious group (n=17), and the non-anxious control intervention group (n=14) completed a baseline performance trial. The second and third trials were completed with random administration of brief cognitive and somatic interventions. The non-anxious control group (n=13) completed three trials with no intervention. A mixed-model, GroupTreatment multivariate analysis of variance indicated significant (P0.05), or performance time or accuracy (P>0.05).     Systematic reviews of complementary therapies - an annotated bibliography. Part 1: Acupuncture

    Background Complementary therapies are widespread but controversial. We aim to provide a comprehensive collection and a summary of systematic reviews of clinical trials in three major complementary therapies (acupuncture, herbal medicine, homeopathy). This article is dealing with acupuncture. Potentially relevant reviews were searched through the register of the Cochrane Complementary Medicine Field, the Cochrane Library, Medline, and bibliographies of articles and books. To be included articles had to review prospective clinical trials of acupuncture; had to describe review methods explicitly; had to be published; and had to focus on treatment effects. Information on conditions, interventions, methods, results and conclusions was extracted using a pretested form and summarized descriptively. Results From a total of 48 potentially relevant reviews preselected in a screeening process 39 met the inclusion criteria. 22 were on various pain syndromes or rheumatic diseases. Other topics addressed by more than one review were addiction, nausea, asthma and tinnitus. Almost unanimously the reviews state that acupuncture trials include too few patients. Often included trials are heterogeneous regarding patients, interventions and outcome measures, are considered to have insufficient quality and contradictory results. Convincing evidence is available only for postoperative nausea, for which acupuncture appears to be of benefit, and smoking cessation, where acupuncture is no more effective than sham acupuncture. Conclusions A large number of systematic reviews on acupuncture exists. What is most obvious from these reviews is the need for (the funding of) well-designed, larger clinical trials

    Competition between ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism: origin of large magnetoresistance in polycrystalline SrRu 1−x Mn x O 3 (0 x 1)

    Abstract Polycrystalline SrRu 1−x Mn x O 3 (0 x 1) perovskite oxides have been prepared by a conventional solid-state reaction technique. Magnetic and magnetotransport properties are measured using a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID, Quantum Design MPMS) over a temperature range of 4-300 K. The substitution of Mn ions for Ru drives the system from a ferromagnetic state, SrRuO 3 , to an antiferromagnetic state, SrMnO 3 , which is basically similar to observations in single-crystal SrRu 1−x Mn x O 3 (Cao et al 2005 Phys. Rev. B 71 035104). However, the measurement of dc magnetization and ac susceptibility indicates that magnetic phase transition with x is more complicated and pronounced than those in single crystals. The phase transition process as temperature is reduced covers paramagnetism-antiferromagnetism (PM-AFM), paramagnetism-ferromagnetism (PM-FM) and ferromagnetismcluster glass-spin glass (FM/CG/SG) etc. In particular, we observe a large lowtemperature magnetoresistance (MR) of −41% for the sample x = 0.55, which is the largest MR measured in Mn-doped SrRuO 3 . The experiment has verified that the large MR stems predominantly from a unique spin glass state in the polycrystalline alloy. These results substantiate that Ru-based oxides doped with 3d/4d transition metals have the potential for use in spintronics devices due to their adjustable phase transition, depending upon the level and nature of 3d/4d ion doping
