An analysis of supply and demand factors influencing the use of lime in nine East Tennessee counties
The objectives of this study were to determine (1) what factors are associated with lime manufacturing and distribution and farmer informational agencies that influence the farmers\u27 usage of lime and (2) farmers’ attitudes and characteristics associated with their use of lime.
The data were obtained by personal interview with 21 lime manufacturers and vendors in East Tennessee and by use of structured questionnaires that were mailed to 1,500 farmers in Anderson, Bradley, Hamilton, Knox, Loudon, McMinn, Meigs, Rhea, and Roane Counties of Tennessee. Fifteen percent of the mail questionnaires were returned completed. The following East Tennessee counties were, therefore, designated as high lime use counties based on this percent of need of lime used: Loudon, McMinn, Meigs, and Rhea. The farmers in these counties appeared to be utilizing more lime than were the farmers in the remaining five counties (Hamilton, Bradley, Roane, Anderson, and Knox) designated as the low lime use area.
The data on lime manufacturers and vendors were used to describe the lime industry in the above East Tennessee counties. Both multiple regression and tabular analysis were used in analyzing the farmer mail questionnaires.
Significant differences were found to occur in the percentage of cropland limed by farmers in these two basically similar farming areas of the Tennessee Valley in East Tennessee. However, it was not possible to ascertain specific reasons for these differences based on an analysis of the firms involved in marketing and distribution of lime or on an analysis of differences in selected socioeconomic characteristics of farmers in these two areas.
Even though reasons for the differences in lime use between the two areas could not be determined,\u27 the following conclusions relative to the factors influencing the supply and demand for lime in the combined nine-county area were possible.
The structure of the lime industry in this area of East Tennessee is comprised of several different types of manufacturers and vendors. The agricultural lime business is a sideline for the manufacturers and only one of many activities carried on by the vendors. Lime represents on the average about 7 percent of the gross sales of quarry operations in this area. Farmer-vendors were the most common type of lime distributor.
An information system in the lime industry which would be responsible for acquainting farmers about the use of lime is nonexistent. Limited advertising is done by vendors to promote lime sales. It also appears that neither lime vendors nor all farmers have made any effort to contact agricultural informational agencies as to sources of educational material nor have they been informed as to the need or profitability of using lime in this area. Around 33 percent of all full- and part-time farmers did not know why lime was used. Also, around AO per cent of all farmers in the area indicated that it was not profitable to use lime in their area.
Farmers in this area of East Tennessee would also benefit from checking with several different types of lime vendors before purchasing lime. Lime prices in the area varied from a low of 5.00 per ton for delivery and spreading.
It appeared that one method of increasing lime use in this area would be to encourage farmers to have soil tests made on their farms. Farmers in this study who utilized soil tests limed a significantly higher percentage of their cropland.
Although farmers with at least one year or more of college appear to have more knowledge concerning lime, around 30 percent of these farmers were still unaware that lime was used to reduce acidity nor did they feel lime was profitable. The most critical problem with respect to lack of knowledge concerning lime involves hobby farmers and non farming landowners in this area of East Tennessee. About one-half of these individuals did not know that lime was used to reduce acidity nor did they consider lime to be profitable in their area.
The following socioeconomic variables were found not to be significantly related to the percent of cropland limed by farmers within this nine-county area of East Tennessee: age, farm acreage, rental agreement, gross farm sales, lime prices, customer satisfaction, or distance from source of lime
Proposal and Investigation of a Method for Measuring Process Color Variation via Reflection Densitometer
This thesis proposes a method of using reflection density readings taken with a conventional graphic arts densitometer to provide a numeric measure of the visual difference between a sample press sheet and a reference sheet. This numerical measure was developed based on the theory that human response to variation in process color printing is more affected by changes in the proportions of process inks to each other than by variation in the overall inking level of the press sheet. The thesis then goes on to explain how the proposed system was tested. First, a set of color samples was generated. Observer evaluations of these color samples were converted to numeric values using psychometric evaluation methods. Using statistical methods, observer evaluations in numeric form were then tested against values obtained by using the proposed system. Observer evaluations of the color samples were also compared statistically with values from the Total Color Difference system as an additional test. The thesis concludes that the proposed system is a reliable predictor of observer response to color variation when the system is used for the purpose of comparing reference press sheets to sample press sheets
Identity crime and misuse in Australia: results of the 2014 online survey
Misuse of personal information lies at the heart of identity crime and continues to affect all sectors of the Australian community.
Abstract
To understand the trends associated with identity crime and misuse in Australia, the Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC) was, in 2014, commissioned by the Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department to undertake a national survey of the problem for the second time. The study is one of a series of initiatives being implemented as part of the National Identity Security Strategy, Australia’s national response to enhancing identity security, which seeks to prevent identity crime and misuse, contribute to national security and facilitate the benefits of the digital economy

The New Proposed U.S. Preventive Services Task Force Recommendation on Breast Cancer Screening for Women in Their 40s: Should the Message Change?
In May 2023, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force
(USPSTF) posted a new draft recommendation for
breast cancer screening, recommending mammography
screening for women aged 40 to 74 years (B recommendation)
(1). This is the latest in a series of USPSTF recommendations
on this topic, dating back to 1989. Although
the recommendation for screening women aged 50 to
74 years has remained relatively constant over these
years, the recommendation for women aged 40 to
49 years has been confusing to many. This latest recommendation
may contribute to that confusion. Because I
participated as both an evidence reviewer (for 20 years)
and a member (for 5 years) of the USPSTF, I write to place
the new recommendation in context by briefly reviewing
the evolution of evidence and recommendations
The fate of bifenthrin and fipronil in pine bark nursery media
Concerns over the adverse effects of pesticides on human health and the environment have led to the development of stricter pesticide regulations and the outright banning of many pesticides in the U.S. Bifenthrin and fipronil are important pesticides used in the nursery industry for the control of imported fire ants (Solenopsis invicta Buren, S. richteri Forel, and their hybrids) to meet the requirements of the Imported Fire Ant Quarantine. Nurseries typically use highly-organic media ( soilless media) and little is known about the fate of these pesticides when used with these media. Our research measured the influence of irrigation frequency and time on the degradation of bifenthrin and fipronil in a nursery medium composed of 90% pine bark and 10% mason sand. Media samples and media leachate samples were collected over a period of 180 days. Levels of bifenthrin, fipronil, and fipronil metabolites (MB45950, MB46136, MB46513) were measured using gas chromatography with electron capture detection (GC/ECD) and gas chromatography secondary ion mass spectrometry (GCMS/SIMS). Bifenthrin levels in the nursery potting media initially dropped and then remained constant throughout the study. Fipronil levels in nursery potting media decreased over time. Levels of the fipronil metabolite MB45950 in potting media fluctuated over time, while the levels of this metabolite increased over time in medi
